Description

งูสายรุ้งดำ.
Enhydris jagorii.

The Bangkok Mud Snake, also sometimes called Jagor's Water Snake is a small yet incredibly thick and stocky homalopsid snake. This species is endemic to the Chao Phraya-Ta Chin basin in central Thailand; due to habitat destruction, constant fishing and its overall rarity, it has been suggested to change its status from Data Deficient to Critically Endangered, as there might exist only one small population.

Virtually nothing is known about the natural history of this snake; rear-fanged and mildly venomous, they prey mainly on fish.

E. jagorii was named in honour of German ethnologist and naturalist Fedor Jagor who would collect specimens for Natual History museum in Berlin during the 19th century. Its common Thai name literally translate to "Black Rainbow Snake", which may be an oxymoron, but a pretty amazing one.

A fish-eating snake that does not live at sea? That's quite uncommon. Thank you for this piece of knowledge, and may this beauty and its mates live on.
