Description
Oligodon annamensis.
(no common Thai name for this species established yet)
The Annam Kukri Snake is one of the most poorly known and mysterious of all the Kukri Snakes from the Oligodon genus. Ever since its description, there have only five single individual specimens been identified - the latest one being added to that list only in 2022 when Justin L. Lee examined a formely unknown individual in the collection of the Florida Museum of Natural History, which had been collected way back in 1987 in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. Previously only known from Vietnam and Cambodia, this is the first evidence of the Annam Kukri Snake appearing in Thailand.
Virtually nothing is known about the natual history of this very secretive snake. Its scientific name epithet derives from Annam, which was the historical name once used for the regions and mountains of central Vietnam.
Long time no Thai snake (or art in general...things happened. But I'm slowly finding myself catching up with everything again).
Ooh, this one is a cutie. ![]()
