The only complaint I have about this episode is a minor one, but it still irritated me. The moment where Sludge said he saw a weakness and exploited it, and that that's what dragons do, and Smolder countered "no we don't". Um...yes they do. I haven't forgotten the little story Smolder told in "The Hearth's Warming Club" which was all about exploiting the weaknesses of others.

What will the other Mane 6 react that Sludge wasn't Spike's father?

I'd give it a C-
It's not terrible, but it's still disappointing. Feels like Dragon Quest 2.0, only not quite as mean-spirited and insulting.

By the way,
"...we are left wondering who Spike's real parents are and why his egg was abandoned. Perhaps the show will one day answer this question."
Pffft! Hahaha! That's cute.  ^_^

A great B-. Simple as that! (And I'm sure everyone will agree on how unlikable Sludge is)

I gave it a straight 'A' for the fun factor - although Sludge breaking Spike's heart was a bit too much, and teasing Spike's parents and ditching viewers again indeed wasn't such a great move. But I liked it anyway ^^

I agree with the B+ rating.  As somebody who was a foster kid, this one really hit close to home.  IS family the ones who just created you, or is family the ones who raised you and took care of you?  Spike, in a sense, could be considered the adopted child of Twilight.  She raised him, loved him, taught him how to be kind and good.  Sludge... Ick.  If he ever actually DID have a child of his own, I bet that they turned out just as bad as he is.

Just because somebody is your biological parent, doesn't mean that they have the know how to actually raise you.

Even Smolder says that while some dragon parents aren't the best, that doesn't mean that they're just lazy and gluttonous and forcing their kids to sleep outside.

I didn't know you were a foster kid, my friend. Would you be willing to talk a bit more about your experience? I'd be really interested to learn more.

My situation was that my parents (more specifically, my mother) were unable to take care of me due to their addictions to drugs and alcohol.  My mother loved me, but she lacked the ability to actually care for me.  So I was put into foster care by CPS (child protective services).

Foster care... isn't fun.  You get a lot of bad apples in the system.  I'll say it now and I'll say it until the day I die; the foster care system in America is absolutely broken.  Children can end up in homes that are just as abusive or neglectful as their biological home.  Some children are lucky and end up in good homes with parents who love them and can take care of them.  They can meet the physical and emotional needs of these foster children.

I was one of those lucky ones, but not in the very beginning.  I was finally adopted at 14 years old.

The other sad thing is that older children in the foster care system are often never picked by foster parents; a good majority of them would prefer babies or younger children.  Not teenagers.  Teens are often seen as "damaged" by foster parents.  Lost causes.

Thanks so much for sharing this with me, my friend. Do you get on well with your adoptive parents? Did it take a long time to trust them or was it quite easy to feel like their daughter? I'm learning a lot from you.

I get along with my adopted mother, yes.  My adopted father died a few years ago.

It did take some time to trust them, as I had been in previous homes that couldn't or wouldn't give the care that I needed.  It took about a year or two to actually feel like I was their daughter.  :)

Thank you again for talking to me about this, my friend. I feel like I've gotten to know you much more. I'm so happy to hear that things worked out for you, though I am sorry to hear about your adoptive father passing away. I hope we can talk more in the future <3

Huh... I agree, it would've been nice to teach kids that not every parent is kind and responsible, but that wasn't the point of the episode. You should judge the episode based on what it is, not what you want it to be.
