History remembers her as the repentant prostitute.

Legend remembers her as the Holy Grail.

Yet the canonical Gospels describe something very different: a close follower of Jesus, a woman with sufficient independence and resources to help sustain his ministry, a witness to the Crucifixion and Burial, and, in the Gospel of John, the first person to encounter the risen Christ.

This piece is the fifth entry in my Exclusive series, Women History Feared, exploring historical women whose lives were transformed by myth, propaganda, admiration, hatred, or fear.

My previous entry explored another woman whose identity became almost inseparable from the legend built around her name: Lucrezia Borgia.

Daughter of a pope, sister of Cesare Borgia, remembered as poisoner, seductress and conspirator, she became one of the most infamous women of the Renaissance. Yet behind the Borgia legend was also the Duchess of Ferrara, a cultivated patron and political figure whose historical life was considerably more complex.
