John Sheppard - 18 by crysothemis John Sheppard - 18 by crysothemis
Again with the Stargate: Atlantis character.

I couldn't resist the new episodic photos -- he just looked so intense in this one. But the gun nearly did me in.

HB pencil only, contrast enhanced in Photoshop because I was too tired of it to go over it with softer pencils.

You captured Sheppard's likeness very well. Have you thought about using blending stumps, I use them in some of my drawing. P-90's have so many damned creases and curves, getting the texure right is hard. Overall great job.

I think you captured Sheppard well, have you though about using blending stumps?

This is an amazing drawing of him. All your drawings of him are simply wonderful. I'm looking to do some of him myself -- just became an Atlantis fan -- but I'm sure your wonderful work will put my drawings to shame!!!

Wow! Amazing! I really thought it was a picture at first, or at least a trace.
crysothemis Featured By Owner Oct 14, 2008

Not a trace, as you can see if you look closely -- I got some of the angles of the #$%& P90 wrong. Darn thing nearly drove me to distraction.

secret-reality Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2007
Simply quite ausome, you've really captured him in the moment. Looking at the end result, no-one would know you had any difficulties, well done. Out of curiousness, do you have a secret to drawing so well?
crysothemis Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2007
Hey, thanks! I'm really glad you've enjoyed my work, and this one in particular.

As for secrets, hmmm. Not really, except that it helps (if you're trying to draw portraits from photos or life) to be able to use more than one part of your visual system. We have both a face-recognition system and a general pattern recognition system, and I find I turn one off and the other on at various times during the drawing.

General pattern recognition is good for figuring out form, negative space, and relative placement of features and shading. By turning off facial recognition (mentally), I'm not distracted by what I think the pattern of light and shadow *should* be, but can see it for what it really is. But I need my facial recognition in order to capture a likeness. I turn it back on in order to see if it looks like the person I'm drawing. If it doesn't, I go back to general pattern recognition to see if I can see what's wrong -- is the eye the wrong shape, is the shadow in the wrong place, etc.

I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but that's what works for me. I can't explain *how* to switch from one mental system to another. I just know it can be done.
