Credit has to go to Maria Popova’s Brain Pickings for the information of Id-Grids and Ego-Graphs: A Confabulation With Finnegans Wake by Jacob Drachler. Popova’s article prompted me to chase down a copy of the 1978 book just because of the visual quality of the graphics.

In Drachler’s own words, “I began, for this project, a systematic culling out of hundreds of brief texts that spoke to me with particular resonance. I would then comb back and forth through these texts somewhat the way a water-douser follows his forked branch. Texts would call forth forms and forms would find their texts.”

I don’t know if these graphics qualify as visual poetry. If not, they’re pretty close.

Many years ago I tried working my way through Finnegans Wake and, as I recall, failed miserably. I don’t know if Drachler’s book will spur me on to try again. Maybe it will.  Maybe.

The Brain Pickings Article  includes 16 of the 44 graphics that make up the book. Here is one -- number 40 -- just for a taste.

I went over to Brain Pickings and took a look. This is absolutely great stuff - thanks for drawing attention to it.

I remember being curious about Finnegan's Wake in college - I would pick it up in the bookstore from time to time, look at the first page - "riverrun past Eve and Adam's" - stand there thinking about it - and put it back on the shelf. Meaning no disrespect to :iconjamesjoyceplz:

I checked out Brain Pickings after reading about it in the NYTimes a while ago. I should remember to go there more often.
