The hospital walls were unbearably drab.
Staring up at the ceiling, you closed your eyes with a sort of tiredness. You could feel all the machines that you were hooked up to, and it made you feel almost less human. When you first arrived, there had been a little boy in this room with you. His name was Jake, and he was always so very happy despite his sickness. Jake managed to make you smile even after the doctor had given his final diagnosis. How could he be so positive?
And now he was gone.
They had taken him away just yesterday, after a whole night of pain and tears. You were there the whole time, listening as his parents told him that it was okay to go if it hurt too much. You were there for the tears. You were there when the heart monitor informed that there was no longer a pulse.
But it felt as if you were an intruder. Stumbling into an intimate moment like an unwanted visitor.
