Like many other deviants, I collect photos into a group of favorites and go back through them every so often. This photo, more than any other photo has me stopping and staring at it. My eyes follow this pattern, I see the girl wide eyed, cute nose and tasty looking lips, the shape of the mouth, the two teeth - and color! Eye popping color, it wakes me up, puts energy in my system. I like how you are looking straight on at me, I see fun and I see - wow, that is a very beautiful eye, and fruit, again, I love the color! This piece is so special and unique in my group of collected favorite photos. The picture I have next to it is a cup of tea - they go good together.
For me to critique you on where you put dots, the placement of fruit, color or shading choices - that is not for me to say. When I first saw this, it brightened my day, and it does still nearly 2 years later - ask me again in a couple more. My critique is purely on the impact of what this photo does emotionally to me. Revitalizing art! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>

This piece of art is very well done. Sometimes as artists, we get really lucky. The color transitions are done really well. The contrasting cool blues against the orange and vice/versa. My favorite part is the transition of colors in the detail of the iris of the eye-- color relativity brings it all together. If it's actually a brown inner iris, the play on color theory is even better! The black dots create transition to the dark shadows, the hair, eyelashes and the outer rim of the iris.

Of course, the underlying human expression can't be poo-pooed. It's magnificent.

I don't write too many critiques. I'm more of a designer than an artist --if that makes sense? This piece deserves some serious thumbs-up.

Good Job!

This (in my opinion) is the best! I have no idea how much skill goes into this but you defininatley made it beautiful! I love the face paint or makeup (i dont know what to call it) you put on just enough to add the effect without overdoing it. The black dots or speckles (again whatever you want to call it) definately added a nice effect. I love that you went with blue hair! It adds nice contrast and it wouldnt be the same if you used orange hair dye, or photoshop whatever you use. Even the placement of the clemintine was perfect! All in all Perfect!

Amazing, beautiful, and skilled are just three of the words I would attribute to this outstanding piece.

Your use of complimentary colors and tints are outstanding. The addition of black really aids the eye into flowing through the piece. The fact that the black is also on the tongue is a good shock point in the picture. The fact that they are even as some may say confusing or unnecessary (being as tangerines don't have black seeds) adds to the depth.

Also your positioning of certain areas of the piece is simply breathtaking. I can see much in your future as an artist and hope dearly that you keep a firm hold on this creative side of yourself. I wish you all the best in your artistic future.

I just love the colors that you used for this piece! The dark, bold color of the blue behind the light color of the skin along with the different shades of orange make each of the piece stand out. The dots are a nice touch, seems very well placed generally speaking. I love the dots that appear on the tongue, has a nice effect when it blends with the darkness inside the mouth. Though for me, the purpose of the dots are a little confusing, because mandarins do not have seeds, nor do they have any sort of dots on or in them. Though if it was purely for detailed purposes then I would just end that note with lovely placing and patterns made! I love the fact that you place a real fruit in this piece helps it emphasize the title "Mandarina". I love how the hair and the eyebrows are blue, while the lips and orbit around the eye are orange. The distribution of colors balance each other out, making it so that no one color stands out more than the other. Even though the mandarin and the slices of madarin on the cheeks are also orange, the change in shade doesn't tip the color balance, but compliments the other colors around it. Good work overall! Loved it! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

Breathtaking.

I don't know exactly how qualified I am to critique someone of your skill, but I'll say I was completely awestruck when I read that this was a self-portrait. I can't even imagine the skill and vision required to plan & execute an image series like this.

The iris detail and the incredible make-up coalesce into something altogether greater than the individual parts. To a lay person (such as myself), the forethought that must have gone into these must have been insane. Its abundantly clear from the end state of your works that you obviously think in a completely different set of colors (figuratively) than many of us. While I can appreciate your images in great depth.. there's no way possible I could imagine something like this and pull it off.

Excellent.

Well, what can I say?
Although there are deviants who are also doing something quite similar to this, I think you put more of a 'blast' to your photos.

The orange makeup around your eye makes your eye scream, "Look over here!" Your eye stands out, and it is a very lovely blend of blue and a tinge of orange.

The blue wig acts as a very good or excellent backdrop or ground. Makes the photo seem more realistically 'fruity' also giving props to the facial expression. Really characterizes an tangerine.

Great job, overall. As I've said, many other deviants are possibly doing this, but yours seems to be my personal favorite to view.

This is absolutely stunning. Where can I even start? Pure beauty, and amazing skills through the set-up, colors, facial expression, and the photography itself.

As I said, the set-up is absolutely fantastic.. The placing of the dots, and the, I am assuming, mandarin over her eye was a delicious addition to this photograph.

No words can describe your fabulous taste in color. Using contrasting colors such as orange and blue made it really pop, and sincerely grabbed my attention.

Now, the facial expression is also what makes this work of art. To myself, mandarin's are tangy and citrus-y. Therefore putting a cute little surprise face pulled this together.

And lastly, your photography skills are great. Close-ups, with fruit and everything. You're a true visionary in the world of today.

Can not wait to see me from you, and especially the Tutti Frutti series.

I love the colors that you used, the different shades of orange that you used helped with the impact, then you have the dark blue that you dyed your hair and eyebrows with. Then of course there is the black dots you added and the paleness of your skin that contradicts each other and yet seems to blend very well in the whole picture. It was a good idea not to put the tangerine in the middle of the picture and more to the side or I feel that it would have made the picture more concentrated on the tangerine when I feel that the picture is perfect now, more seemingly concentrated on the blend of oranges, your very captivating eye, and then the dark blue frame on one side from your hair.

I notice that some dots seem to be darker then the rest, and that is fine but there is a couple dark ones on your eye that is also fairly bigger then the rest of the dots and that seems to distract me somewhat from your beautiful eye. Also, on one of the orange slice-like things on your cheek, the one closest to your nose, the outline of it on the bottom it much more darker then the rest. It seems to throw off the balance of that part of the face art.

Other then those, I simply love this. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>

Really Good. I liked the cherry one better but this one is better. I like to stay with the oldies but this photo is one of my top. Ever. The ingenuity is brilliant. If that makes sense

You turn common ideas, that most of see every day into bright brilliant ideas of works of art. The blue contrasts beautifully with the orange. Those contact lenses suit the photo very well as well.

The freckle like idea was also clever. Very much. I enjoy meeting or seeing works of art by other people even though I'm only 12. I seriously would not have thought of this in a million years. Very clever. Your tutti fruity collection is one of the best collections I've ever seen in my short life span. I hope a very rich collector will buy your works of art someday. For someone as young as you, your a natural.

The best self-portrait I've seen in a while! This image is beautiful, colorful, and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. >u<
You really look like a tangerine to me, in some artistic way.
I also love your expression. It really gives the fun feeling of the vibrant orange. Amazing, really, it is. I think your tutti frutti series is really creative and original, since the originality level on deviantart has gone way down since this site opened. The makeup looks so good on you, and your pretty face is perfect for this image. A very well thought out and original shot like this is hard to find these days. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

High impact piece, I enjoy your thought process and vision with it for sure. Positioning is good, I like the way you composed this off-center.

Here are some things out of my personal opinion that I find would improve your piece:
I would have liked to see more of your bangs or the top of your head. I understand that the point of this framing was to establish an extreme close up of the face to show the eye colour and textural elements, but a little less cropping and a little more bangs would have given a nice natural frame to the face.

Another thing I have to nitpick is the black dots around your face which I find distracts from the overall impact or message of the photo. Since a tangerine has no seeds or dark spots for that matter, in this photo it would not make sense (whereas it worked for your watermelon and kiwi photos which were excellent). The face paint of the tangerine sections also kind of distract from the beautiful asymmetrical balance you have created with your placement of subjects. It balances out the tangerine itself, but not in a way where it enhances the overall look of things. This is where you lost points on technique.

For some reason I also feel as though this photo is a tad too dark to be represented by a citrus fruit, for something like your watermelon photo stands out more then this. Pump up the saturation a bit more, something like this photo can afford it for sure.

Overall, lovely piece, I enjoyed it, keep up the good work.

This is a wonderfully striking image with a very well thought out colour palette. I like the fact that you've got various shades of orange throughout the makeup, and the slight dryness on your lips gives a lovely sense of texture in the brighter shades. The tongue dots are a lovely touch as well, and the texture over your skin adds a lot of depth. Speaking of depth - your eyes stand out beautifully, and they look gorgeous.

Blue is, of course, the natural choice for orange being a complimentary colour, and I love the fact that as well as dying your hair you've dyed your eyebrows as well. I also very much like the fact that you've captured this slightly off-centre.

What I would say is two-fold - firstly the outlining on the segment shapes on your cheek looks a little uneven and uncertain. It's quite difficult to see what effect you meant to get from that. Although it's not at all intrusive and doesn't much affect the rest of the picture it's a little...well, off, perhaps. Secondly, some of the dots on your face are a little odd - either you overdo them in some sections (at least in my humble opinion) or, in the case of the ones above your eye, they seem to acquire a texture of their own. Again, this isn't so much a bad thing as inconstant as compared to the rest of the black dots.

Other than those two incredibly nitpicky points I really, really like this - well done! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>

My favourite one yet! I said before that i like it when the fruit is off centre, and this one is great! The fact that the face is front on and perfectly straight looks great with the lop-sided look that the fruit gives. As usual, you've designed it so the eyes contrast with the colour nicely. Blue complements the orange really well. I like how the spots are spread out further than usual, and into the mouth, and how the face-paint is emulating the shape of fruit pieces. It makes the picture seem wilder and quirkier than some of the others. Your hair is a nice, dark end to the brightness, and off-centre pictures are a favourite of mine, so i like the effect it gives.

So, wonderful photography, a beautiful picture. I think this fruit was a great choice because the individual pieces are shapes within a shape.
