Active Watchers?

Sat Jan 20, 2007, 2:23 PM
IF YOU WATCH ME, READ THIS!!

I hate to do this again, but lately dA just hasn't been inspiring me like it should. I think that's because I can't stand looking at the crap on here!! And even more than that, I feel like it's a burden to go through my messages. And it really shouldn't be!!! I'm genuinely sick of trying to find good art on here and finding worse-than-myspace quality photos. And thousands of them at that!!

My point being, this is an ACTIVE CHECK!! If you actually like my art and try to keep up with it, then let me know!! It doesn't matter if you comment or not (I know I don't always comment on everyone's work.... so sorry!!) just as long as you get something out of it, let me know! I have 160+ watchers, and I damn well know not that many people actually pay attention! I just really want to sort it out.

I just can't keep up with everything that's in my messages! My current messages are '239 deviations, 155 messages' and I've been going through them!!

If you don't comment/pay attention to me because I don't to you, it might be because I'm so swamped, so let me know! Don't be shy! Geesh I remember when I first joined this site and I only got one or two messages a day and maybe three deviations, and I wanted more! HA!

And what is up with these poinless journals people post? I'm sorry, but when I'm trying to clean up my message center and a journal consists of one line of pointless jabber, it strikes a nerve. Same thing with 20 photos of your foot.

This is my current list of people who don't pay attention. If you should not be on this list, tell me. I have these people in my watch list but have everything turned off. If you do pay attention, I'll keep up with you.

These are the people who are new to my list of watchers and who I'm unsure about. Tell me if you watch!!! If you don't respond, you'll be moved to my list-of-people-who-don't-really-watch.

I stay on this site to get my art out there, to look at the great people here and be inspired, and to help other people on the site improve along with me. I just don't want to waste my time helping you improve if I'm not getting anything out of it; if you just look at my art then great! I'll watch you back. But I can't stand having this be such a mess any longer! I don't care if that sounds 'selfish'. You'll live.

By the way, I'd be willing to exchange a piece of art if someone would make me a nice CSS layout for my journal. Talk to me about it before you do any work - I have ideas I'm just not so good with HTML and CSS.

On that note, have a good Saturday! :D Oh, and here's the WIP of my Raven painting!

Oh, and by the way, here's a quote from Saint-Exupéry which might interest you. (The fist-person character is a kind of desertland sheikh.)

[My father said further:][...]
«I saw dancing girls compose their dance. And once the dance created and danced, indeed no one took the fruit of the work to make provisions of it. The dance passes as fire. And yet I call civilised the people who compose their dances, though there be for dances neither harvest nor granaries. While I call brutes the people who align on their shelves objects, even of the finest, born of others' work, even if they prove capable of getting drunk in their perfection.
«Man, said my father, is first he who creates. And only these men are brethren, who work together. And only these live, who haven't found their peace in the provisions they had made.»
One day someone put him an objection:
«What dost thou call create? For if it is about an invention that gets notices, only a very few are capable of it. So thou speakest for only a mere few; but what about the others?»
My father answered them:
«Creating, it is failing, perhaps, that step in the dance. It is hitting the stone askew with the chisel. The gesture's destiny doesn't matter. This effort seems sterile to thee, blind man, who standest with the nose against it; but step back. Consider from farther away the movement of this town quarter. There is nothing left there, but a huge fervour and a golden work dust. And the failed gestures, thou dost not notice them anymore. For that people leaning on the work, willy-nilly, builds its palaces or its cisterns or its large hanging gardens. Its masterworks are born as if by necessity from the enchantment of its fingers. And I am telling thee, they are born as well of these who fail their gestures as of those who succeed in them, for thou canst not divide man, and if thou savest only the great sculptors, thou wilt be deprived of great sculptors. Who would be foolish enough to choose a profession offering so little chance of living? The great sculptor is born of the compost of bad sculptors. They serve him as a stair and elevate him. And the dancing fervour require that all dance — even those who dance badly — else there is no fervour anymore but a petrified academy and a spectacle without meaning.
«Don't condemn their errors like the historian who judges an already concluded era. But who shall reproach the cedar, that it is still only a seed or a stem or a twig grown askew? Let it be. From error to error there will arise a forest of cedars which will give away, in days of strong wind, the incense of its birds.»
And my father used to say in conclusion:
«I already told thee. One's failure, another's success, don't bother with these divisions. What is fecund is only the huge collaboration of the one through the other. And the failed gesture serves the succeeding gesture. And the succeeding gesture shows the goal at which they were aiming together, to him who failed his gesture. He who finds the god, finds him for all. For my realm is alike to a temple, and I made demands from the men. I invited the men to build it. Thus, it is their temple. And the birth of the temple draws out of themselves their highest meaning. And they invent gilding. And he who was searching for it without success, invents it too. For it is firstly out of that fervour, that gilding was born.»

He said elsewhere:
«Don't invent a realm where everything would be perfect. For good taste is a virtue for museum guards. And if thou despisest bad taste, thou wilt have neither paintings, nor dances, nor palaces, nor gardens. Thou wilst have acted disgust out ot of fear of the foil labour of the earth. Thou wilt be deprived of them by the void of thy perfection. Invent a realm where, simply, everything be fervent.»

(Citadel, chap. IX)

I'm paying attention, and I like what you do. If I don't fave your work or comment on them as often as I should, it's because my watchlist is too full.

More power to you!!
This pisses me off as well, I have about 110 people watching me, and I get like 6 commets a deviation and its annoying. But lately, I've not been spending as much time doing digital work and been doing experimental traditional art instead, without posting it on dA. It just doesn't grab me like the way it used to, and today is the first time I've been online in the past 3 days! It's so weird because I don't miss it.
I don't want to out-grow dA, but I think I am doing :-s
I always come back to check on people like you though :D :smooch:
I hope you get yours sorted :)

I'm the same way, sort of outgrowing dA. It really makes me sad because this site used to inspire me sooo much! And I'm having the same problem with my art - my photography is just not as popular as my digital work. Actually, my digital stuff is really the only thing that gets any attention. That's awesome, though, that you've been doing some traditional!! You should at least put it in your scraps, I'd love to see it! :D I guess lately I just can't get into art at all - I haven't even been painting like I used to, or taking photos, or doing digital work! Geesh, now that I think about it, I wonder why I'm being like that? I was horribly depressed for a few months and it ended about a month ago, maybe it's just the remains of that. All I've been doing is sleeping and reading about all kinds of random things.

Of course, with the way dA has been lately (all the CRAP art, and I'm not even talking about people trying, it's like they just want to post something) it's not too hard to outgrow it. I remember when you could browse the categories and find interesting, expressive ART. It's hard to find art on this site now, it's really sad.

Yeah, I completely agree :( It's really sad. But I'm not really looking for anywhere new to look at art really. I think I just want to do it and keep it to myself now, because putting my art on dA just doesn't have the same affect :(

You may have a look at mine works if you get bored some day ;)

I stalk....er.....watch you. And I pay attention. :)

It's alright if you don't comment my stuff, I submit it mainly as an archive for myself in case something happens to my PC.

I learned long ago not to expect much from this site. I know that the feedback I get on here probably doesn't reflect how good my work is. I've shown it to several people, (including a college literature professer.) and I usually get good feedback. Most people on this site want to see either emo poetry, "Artistic" nude crap, or abstract art. None of which I give a shit about.

So yeah, I pay attention to you. I have you on my frontpage so I know whenever you've uploaded something new. :)

Very true. There aren't a lot of people that get very popular on here, and usually when they do it's because they post a whole bunch of the same stuff - practically the same image over and over again, just because people liked the first one. Definitly lacks in the creativity department... Anyway - I only don't comment because I'm slightly lazy when it comes to checking my messages, and sometimes it feels like a chore. I will sooner or later :)

Same here. I at one point had 85 deviations in my inbox and I don't watch that many people. I finally forced myself to sit down one day and sludge through them all.

I can't really expect someone to comment my story chapters as much as one would expect comments on a photo. People click the deviation and see a pic and are like "O.K. I can comment that" but then they look over and see a big long thing of text and go "Oh no! I don't wanna hafta think!" plus, as much as I find it hard to believe, some people actually have life and don't have the time to read something.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll get plenty of readers once the book is sitting on the shelves. XD

Oh that's crazy! Yeah, I know what you mean about images vs. the written word. I'm guilty of saving them for last when I'm going through my messages lol.

Ahhh I know how you feel, it seems that only about half of the people on my watch list ever bother to even look at the stuff I do!

Anyway, just to reassure you, I watch! I look at all the deviations that pass my watch list, and comment on about 70-80% of them... Although sometimes it does take some time for me to do it, I get about 50 odd deviations pop up a day! Normally you'll receive a load of new comments from me all at one time!

Oh it's so annoying! Anyway, you do watch me, and you're getting bumped to the 'people I watch back' category lol. 50 a day?! That's crazy! I'd never be able to get through them lol! I do that with people too - don't comment for a long time and then boom! There's ten comments from me when you log on, heh.

Fortunately I'm not on that list! Whew! ^.^

I know where you're coming from with the thing about the less-than-myspace quality stuff... it's ridiculous, you log on and almost all of the recent stuff is a cellphone camera picture or similar. Even *I* get frustrated with it, and I've not been here that long!

It's so stupid! When I first got here (early 2004) there were still the myspace whores with a dA pages, but now you can't even find a good artist with the 'random deviant' button unless you spend like an hour clicking it!! and browsing anything other than 'popular' is just useless, because it's so much work to sort through the crap that it's just not worth it!

Of course you're not on the list, I know you in real life! :D

LOL, well, I suppose that's a good reason to keep me off that list... XD

Just like you guys said above/below me (depends on your settings, lol) I wait ages before commenting on stuff, but I tend to comment on everything except resources. My list is at.... 60 right now. And since the TV has been taken over by football (the bad kind, lol) tonight, I'll probably go through them all. Stupid lazy me... LOL
