>>Alchemy<< (works with mac,pc and linux)

Alchemy is a Free program that lets you brainstorm idea's visually to explore an expanded range of ideas and possibilities using your imagination to see what the shapes could be and expanding on that to create art.

How do you use the program?

its suggested to have a tablet for this but it is fine to use without one.

its recommended that you look through the settings in the menu and check out the keyboard shortcuts to be able to switch types of shapes to quickly add new interesting shapes.

using the hotkey x will invert your colours and you will go from using black to using white. Its good if you want to go into detailing and you can switch back to just using black by hitting x again.

Just start messing around with the features such as splatter, randomize, etc there is no wrong way of using it.

Use your imagination look at it and figure out what certain patterns could be(example of this would be like looking at clouds and guessing what they look like).

if it helps pick a theme or subject before finding what shapes look like what

here are some examples of what people have come up with

Questions & Answers

I want to create the same shape on both sides like in the video and I can't get the program to do that where is it?

You have to click on affect button and look for the tool called mirror then you can create shapes on both sides.

I'm trying out the program but can't get anything to look like people or animals

I can't either though some will be able to and other can't if you can draw well enough with it you can still get prop idea's or designs out of the program you can apply to your drawings and animations.

Cool program can I use it for anything else

You can save out the images you make in certain formats and bring them into programs such as photoshop, gimp, flash, and even use it to make stencil for 3D sculpting programs like Z-brush,mudbox or Sculptris( free as well[link])

np :D those where some good links added the Alchemy, MyPaint, and Gimp link from David Revoy to the list.

if you haven't checked it out already you should look at the Free 3D Software Available valued at $800

Very nice!

If someone is interested, here is a time lapse of of David Revoy using Alchemy, MyPaint, and Gimp to develop a character for the open source movie Sintel [link] (Mr. Revoy was art director)

And if anyone would like to see the Sintel movie you can get it for free here [link]
