Evil Lava Castle by crazycolleeny Evil Lava Castle by crazycolleeny
Another small painting; I wanted to try out a "lava castle" idea I had and this is what I ended up with ;)
5x7" oil painting

This painting will be available in my Etsy store for $30+shipping once it is dry.

This painting would have benefited from additional lightness and warmth to the depiction of lava. This aspect seems somewhat lacking in vibrance, and thus lacks the vehemence to convey the sense of heat and fervour to the viewer. Making this aspect with a warmer range of oranges and yellows would differentiate this component from the darker, more subdued red sky, as well as emphasising the placement of the rocks (a somewhat cool grey).
The entrance to the castle seems somewhat lacking in depth, most likely because of the presence of light. While this was clearly meant to indicate that light was pouring through the entryway, the way it was done seems out of place. I believe this would come through better if the light were more angular in it's trajectory (it looks like the viewer is seeing directly into the door, when they are at an angle to it), and if the light was reflected in the ground in front of the door (to indicate the light is moving out into space, rather than ending at the boundaries of the doorframe).

Thanks for the comments; I'll keep these in mind if I make a larger version of this piece :)
