I whipped this up in about an hour, because I was looking around DA and I couldn't find any vector tutorials to find hair, so I made one myself lol, I hope it helps.

This looks like a great approach to try out. I'm currently working on a mesh portrait in Illustrator and I wasn't quite sure on how to go about with the hair. And I doubt anything good can be acquired with the mesh tool for the hair.
Thanks! =D

yo ur the shit dude i jus so happen to be lookin on google for a hair tutorial and came accross yours thats cool as hell dude that u went out ur way to help others. i only been a graphic design artist for like 2 years and hair and shading are 2 of my problem areas im still tryna figure it out as good as i see others and this makes it real easy wish some1 had showed me this way sooner! so thanks and if u think of anything bout shading let me kno since ur so good at this tutorial thing. lol im not so good with the shading alot better but not good enough yet i do it alittle but usually i jus avoid it cuz my shading doesnt really do the job of making it look as realistic as i want

This is very handy, I prefer doing my vectors in Illustrator due to being able to reselect your line work etc and play around with it. but hair has always been a nightmare with me in illustrator, especially as you dont have the smudge, burn and lighten function like in Photoshop. So hopefully this method will make things look better!

crazychild Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2005
No problems, its nice to help some of those people out there that appreciate it
nous-sommes-vous Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2005
i've downloaded a trial version of illustrator in the hope of doing some vector stuff (snowboard designs would be a dream) but at the moment, nothing i do will make the "layers" palette come back on my screen. i've no idea where it went, but it's not there anymore. it's difficult to do anything when i can't access the layers properly :o i'm very confused, but maybe it's a sign i should stop trying to use illustrator ;P

oh well. thanks again :)
crazychild Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2005
Ok mate, if you go into window (this is located in the taskbar) scroll down til you find layers, and what you need should be that, or a quicker way just press F7.

I hope that helped, thankyou
nous-sommes-vous Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2005
i know :( i've tried that again and again and again. it's been very frustrating. i've cliked the windows > layers thing, i've tried F7, but nothing is working. 'frustrating' is an understatement, actually.
crazychild Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2005
hmmm dont know then, probably a glitch with the trial version, i dont seem to have any problems with the whole version, Illustrator CS is one of the best, cant go wrong with it, i havn't tried CS2 yet, i may have to try it out sometime.
nous-sommes-vous Featured By Owner Nov 21, 2005
yeah i'm assuming it's because it's try-out :hmm: i hear that the full version is expensive, and i guess that makes sense if it's so awesome (and a necessity if you're using it for graphic design jobs, so i've noticed). oh well. it might sort itself out, it might not. guess i'll wait and see.

:) thank you.

thanks a lot. I'll try it out in Xara a little later.

I just read this tutorial now, and it's very helpful. I've been doing hair that way fer a while, but yers just turns out so well. I need a better technique at doing the tips/strands of hair on their own if you know what I mean. No worries fer now, but if you come across anything, please let me know.
