MMD in Blender 2.79 Importing Motions Tutorial

Read all comments in all the MMD in Blender tutorials I've made to see if your question has been answered before you ask ^^
Also, check out our group :iconmmd2blender-mmdart: There are other MMD in Blender tutorials there as well as art
 :D

I finally made an updated version of how to import MMD motions into Blender. There were a lot of updates made to MMD Tools addon by powroupi so I decided to update this tutorial. There are two parts to this tutorial this is part 1 ^^

I used Blender 2.79b for this tutorial but this will also work in previous versions of Blender. This tutorial focuses on how to import MMD motions, how to turn the physics on, and how to add sound. If you have any questions feel free to ask :D ^^

I did not include this in the tutorial since this tutorial was for importing. If you want to make your own animations in Blender the model has to be in T pose for the first keyframe. The model also has to be in the center of the 3D viewport where it imports in. Then afterwards you can move the model around and the rigid body should follow the model without any issues. If you want me to make a tutorial about it let me know ^^

This is where I found out about it blenderartists.org/forum/showt…

Hey, I know this is a very old post, but I see you replying to people still so was hoping to ask you a question. When building the physics, everything worked correctly as far as I'm aware, except the physics are very "floaty" (like as in underwater). Is there any way to adjust the physics settings or would I have to go back and adjust the size of the model? Thank you!

I don't know much about physics, but here is a tutorial I found that shows how to possibly get the physics to work correctly. He starts talking about the physics around 9:15 ^^

Or if that is not the floaty physics you mean you could try playing around with the gravity settings in the Scene Properties tab and see if that does anything. Or you could try changing the size of the model, but I'm not sure if that will help it or not ^^

So I did some poking around and the "legit" solution is to edit the rigid bodies that are attached to the various parts of the body. I admit I'm not 100% sure what the correct way to to do this is, but I think if you up the weight of each rigid body by whatever you scaled up your MMD model by (so if you are at 1.0 instead of 0.2, raise the mass by x5), you should be good.

Thanks for the info :D I'll have to try it out and see if I can get it to work. I haven't been able to get the physics to work correctly on MMD models in Blender for a long time ^^

Yeah, the MMD physics button is janky at best. I only use it for the hair really. It usually works about 40% of the time. The skirt one is a mess at the best of times. I use the cloth modifier for the skirt/dress part.

Yeah, I want to learn how to use Blender's cloth physics on MMD models at some point ^^

Helle, thank a lot for the tutorial but I have a problem. So I bake all physic but I doesn't fix my problem, I also try your suggestion but noting work ;---;

thank you

You're very welcome! :D Baking all physics used to work in older versions of Blender, but for some reason now it doesn't fix the physic issues. I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it yet either. If I'm able to figure out how to fix it I will make a tutorial for it ^^

Thanks a lot for the valuable tutorial but I have a problem. Just after I build physics the model's breasts go all over the place. Any idea how to fix this?

You're very welcome! :D Do the physics go all over the place even after you bake them? If baking them doesn't fix it you could try the different things that nagadomi has suggested to someone here https://github.com/powroupi/blender_mmd_tools/issues/267 ^^

yes. it is solved after I bake the physics from scene properties tab. Earlier I was baking the physics but not from the scene properties tab, I was doing it by pressing F3 in viewport and searching for bake physics. That doesn't work.

So thank you so much <3 <3

You're very welcome! I'm glad it worked :D ^^

Hey thank you for the tutorial but mine seems to be having a problem, when I load a motion, it loads the motion six frames from 0, any idea how to fix it?

crazy4anime09's avatar

You're very welcome! :D Are you on the first frame before you import the motion? ^^

Dreinimator-MMD's avatar

Helllo! I figured out the problem, newbie mistake on my part. I got a question tho. How can we use the cloth physics of blender and implement it to the mmd model?

crazy4anime09's avatar

I'm glad you figured it out :D I'm not sure how to do that yet because I haven't learned how to use Blender's cloth physics. If you look up cloth physics tutorials in Blender on Youtube you might be able to figure it out. If I figure out how to do it I can let you know ^^

great!thank you for this tutorial, however, I don't know how to import the expression(facial motions) into my model! I can import the motion file, and it works well with the body, however, the facial motion data, like lips or eyes are not being imported. could you plz help to teach this?
crazy4anime09's avatar
You're very welcome! :D Did you select both the armature and the model? Select the model then press the shift key to select the armature so that they are both selected. If you only select the armature the motion for the body will import but not the facials, and if you select only the body the facials will import but not the motion for the body ^^

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial, without it I don't think I'd ever know what this stuff was.

It woks on blender 2.80! Thank you! you earned a watcher!

crazy4anime09's avatar
You're very welcome, and thank you very much for the watch! ^^

following your instructions...none of it works at all...always getting errors...highly disappointed not in you but this method..don't really work..at all.

crazy4anime09's avatar
That's a bummer :( I rarely get any errors. When I do get them they usually get fixed by powroupi. The only thing I can suggest is to make sure you are using the latest version of Blender and the MMD Tools addon. I would stick with using Blender 2.79 for now because I think people are getting errors when using 2.80. I'm waiting for 2.80 to be officially released before I try to use it ^^
