April is turning out to be super busy! I had a successful convention Artist Alley experience last weekend and now I'm recovering from a headcold. Monday I'm teaching a copic marker class in my city and on the 30th I'm going to sell my art at a big local art show. I hope to get some time to experiment with some more commission offerings and badge features!

Thank you guys already for all the birthday wishes!! I hope everyone has a great weekend! ^^

#deviantartistquestionnaire

1.) How long have you been on DeviantArt?
9 years! Since Sept. 28th 2005! Long enough to get three Daily Deviations for a style of art that I never really tried until 2006!
Candy-gram for mister ahfemashajamenson... by Crazdude FREE ICON - Snail on mushroom by Crazdude Okami - Art is Life by Crazdude

2.) What does your username mean?
When I first made my first email account (AOL account!) I wanted "Crazydude" since I called all my friends "dude" and I used the word "Crazy" for just about everything. But someone had taken it. I figured "I don't need that Y to make it Crazy!" And went with Crazdude for my AOL account and it was my screenname on a bunch of messageboard sites. I kept the name for DA and "Craz" has been my nickname ever since. :)

3.) Describe yourself in three words.
Optimistic Nurturing Creative

4.) Are you left or right handed?
Right

5.) What was your first deviation?
omg do I have to? D:  Wolf Face by Crazdude *vomits all over everyone*

6.) What is your favourite type of art to create?
I'm really enjoying vector; so crisp and shiny!  Adopt A Seadog - Threadless - Please help! vote 5 by Crazdude

7.) If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Graffiti!  Persian Graffiti by Kolahstudio

8.) What was your first favourite?
Autumn Jester by Goldenwolf Classic ^^

9.) What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
Digital (Pixels, painting, vector)

10.) Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
Ack! Hard one! I love so many different styles and mediums! D: I'd say the one who got me inspired to start drawing again: :iconthornwolf: <3

11.) If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
omg so many! :iconnaurok: :iconblackmustang13: :iconfrogandcog: and so many more! We've been DA buds since dinosaurs ruled the earth!

12.) How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
After spending most of my life (since I was two years old) being praised for my art, I rested on my laurels. Then I joined DA and got a swift kick in the pants to wake up to reality! I realized how much more there was to learn and grow with my art (I mean, come on! Look at #5!) In the process, I made new friends, improved my work, helped others to learn and grow... It was a great experience despite the dumb flamewars and art theft.

13.) What are your preferred tools to create art?
Digital: WACOM tablet, Adobe Creative Suite... Traditional: mechanical pencil and clicky eraser, expensive colored pencils and cheap watercolors! xD

14.) What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
My art room ^^

15.) What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
The love and care and support that my followers and friends showed me when my mother passed away while I was in college. At a time when I felt crippling loneliness, I had a great support system and network of friends.
Updates:

Children's book - Illustrations are done! Waiting for the proof/prototype of the first book to see if I need to make any additional changes. The book is called "Ungrateful" and the publisher has created a Facebook page --> www.facebook.com/ungratefulboo… (unfortunately the publisher uploaded images which are not the latest-and-greatest... yuck!)

Wedding plans - I have a date set for June of 2014, stromie and I reserved a nice park lodge to get married in and have our reception. :date: I just have to work out all the details and make it happen!

Work - My company has been a mess since the merger. My boss is leaving and starting his job at a different company at the end of this month. He has advised everyone in my department to search for a new job and not to  wait until lay-offs happen again. So I have to resume the job hunt and not even a full year after my last job search. Hopefully I'll be here through November at least... I'd like to have worked at least 1 year here considering I was laid off after less than a year from my previous job.

Art - I haven't been inspired lately. I have mostly been crocheting hats, fingerless gloves, and finished a blanket. (: I have been commissioned (sort of?) to draw a logo for one of our favorite restaurants: fiammarochester.com - I'm hoping that I get my inspiration back so I can start on it!

Much LORF! And we'll see you in the new year!

For those who mistook my statement in the artist's comments
(i.e.: thought I was somehow "attacking" ClefairyKid (CK))

Please take a moment to understand my statement for what it IS (rather than what it COULD be) and learn a little something about who I am before jumping to conclusions:

I have been on hiatus since June and came back yesterday to discover that the world on DA blew up in another fit of blind rage...

I have been on here for a great number of years. I find more value out of helping other artists to improve their skills and I honestly don't care whether I get a DD or not. I like making friends and keeping them. I don't like drama and I certainly wasn't "bitching anyone out." Partially due to the dramatic tendencies of DA, I took a hiatus to focus on with work, reducing stress, illustrating a children's book, and dealing with wedding plans.

This deviation was submitted long before my hiatus, which began in June.
The statement I made consists of 8 parts (facts and intent):

1.) INTENT - At the time when I posted the statement, I was receiving a lot of comments saying this "deserves" a DD.

2.) PROBLEM AT HAND - The comments merely filled my in-box and I wanted to reduce the clutter.

3.) FACT - The DD guidelines state that any deviation over 1,000 favs would not be considered eligible (which is understandable since there are lesser known artists that deserve some DD love and global exposure for their work.)

4.) FACT - This deviation had more than 1,000 favs therefore it was supposedly ineligible.

5.) INTENT - Many deviants don't take the time to research the DD guidelines so I wanted to post it so deviants would be aware of the guidelines.

6.) INTENT - Since the guidelines stated it would not be eligible, I didn't care if I got a DD and did not expect a DD.

7.) FACT - CK happened to be the Community Volunteer (CV) in charge of the category at the time.

8.) FACT- A new CV was assigned to the category of DDs after I posted the statement and after I was on hiatus.

I stated that it would not get a DD because of the guidelines; not because of CK herself.
I did not accuse, lash out, insult, bitch out, or otherwise attack CK nor was it my intent.
Because it was a publicly posted statement in the guidelines, I saw no problem publicly posting it on my deviation comments.
I wasn't guilt-tripping or being spiteful when I posted the statement
I was merely trying to educate.

Not all statements on the internet are written to be an attack or otherwise taken personally.
Sometimes a statement is just a statement.
Facts are facts.
The guidelines are guidelines.

And apparently every CV operates as they please, with the aid of the guidelines. I find it strange that people thought I was "Proving CK wrong"... I don't understand how I can "prove someone wrong" when:

A.) I'm not in control of giving myself a DD,
B.) depending on the CV, the DD guidelines seem to be followed more like a list of "suggestions" rather than a list of "rules",
C.) the statement was in my artist's comments description ALMOST A YEAR before I was given a DD,
and D.) I was never expecting a DD for this. EVER.

And frankly, it would have been better if I never got the DD. It was already ridiculously popular, stolen on sites outside of DA, and so forth. I don't need the attention or the drama.

In my opinion, getting a DD is far less important to me than making people happy.
And nothing upsets me more than being accused of being a malicious person.

Yesterday was a miserable and stress-filled day before I even logged into DA.
This DD has only caused more strife, anxiety, frustration, and tears.

I have already apologized to CK and a friend of hers who participated in the accusations and drama. I again apologize to those who misinterpreted the statement and for all that were hurt by what was perceived as a negative/slanderous statement. I never meant anyone to feel "shamed", "bitched out", "bad-mouthed", or otherwise hurt by stating a simple portion of the guideline. Hurting people is not what I have come all this way and existed on this site to do. If anything, these explosions of rage, accusation, and hurt is exactly why I vanished on multiple occasions and why I have often contemplated closing my account permanently. This type of alarmist drama is far too abundant on this site. It sickens me every time.

With all that said, I'm sorry that you misunderstood my statement -- I never meant to insult anyone by stating the facts -- and hope you understand that if you took the time to get to know me -- see my other artworks, read my journals, talk to some of my friends -- I'm someone that is trying to do my small part to turn drama down, help artists to improve their skills, and bring a little bit of happiness and sanity to this crazy place.

If those who were offended choose to never speak to me again, I have no issue. I merely want to keep the peace and help reduce the drama.

For those who understand and support me:
Thank you for being there for me through so many tough times -- art theft, character theft, the loss of my grandmother and mother, losing my job, and the loss of a very close friend. This time of stress and drama is no different. Thank you all!

Now that I have cleared the air, I will resume my hiatus now. I cannot deal with this level of stress while I have so much on my mind.

Peace, health and love,
Craz
Deviant Art has become a major distraction for me. (Keeping me from art and keeping me from being productive at work -- all of which is bad.)
With this in mind, I'm taking a short break from DA.

I will be posting more to my Facebook Page in the meantime.

I have felt a lack of confidence in my art.

Part has been the fact that I feel pressured to make sellable art again.
I don't believe anyone wants to buy prints or originals from me...

Part of it has been that I'm still getting caught up in all the social aspects of DA and not producing the art that I want to.
Giving llamas instead of working on art = not good.
Giving llamas and commenting on journals instead of working = BAD... I could lose my job for that kind of thing.

And the massive art theft discovery yesterday certainly put a bad taste in my mouth about posting my art.
I haven't been directly affected by art theft in a few years but art theft in general is always a turn-off for me regardless of who has been affected.

I want to work on traditional art while I have more sunlight in my art-room after work.

And I need stromie to fix my computer so I can do more digital art as well.

PLEASE HELP TO REPORT THIS FACEBOOK PAGE FOR ART THEFT!
FACEBOOK HAS DENIED MY REQUEST TO SHUT THIS PAGE DOWN.

I've been going through this horrible Facebook Page's photo albums - so many Deviant Artists have had their works stolen. ):

I've reported the ones I recognize (to FB and the artists like AmuroNOVA, mysteriouswhitewolf, Novawuff, Yellow-eyes, Rayndancer, swandog, WolfRoad, darknatasha, WhiteSpiritWolf, jocarra, SheltieWolf, Lhuin, Apofiss, woxys, PixieCold Lupinicious, merimask, and many more)

...but there are so many, I couldn't name them all. x______x
  1. Please go through the photos and find images that you recognize
  2. Click the "Report" link to report the violation to Facebook - I've been labeling it as "Harasses my friends" since I can't claim intellectual property
  3. Comment on the photo with something like: "Reported - please don't steal art" and leave a link to the original deviation
  4. let the artists of the artwork know (give them a link to the stolen artwork) so they can report it personally
  5. Post a journal to spread the information so that more people can tell them what they're doing is wrong.
DO NOT START A FLAME WAR!
FIGHT WITH FACTS, NOT INSULTS.

Here are just a few that I recognize but couldn't find on DA:

Thank you for your help!
Craz

Disclaimer: if you aren't going to read this journal completely to understand the concepts I'm bringing up, do not bother to comment. Random angry/drama-spewing comments from TL;DR-ers are unwarranted and unwelcome. Thank you for understanding!

I just had a new complaint about my prices for my Pay to use deviations... I've had a few of these in the past (for both commissions and pay-to-use deviations) and I try to handle them the same way.

1.) calm any frustration
2.) collect my thoughts
3.) and write my explanation for my own actions.
(I seriously have to explain my own actions and decisions that I have chosen for the permissions and pricing of my own creations? Really??)

I know that most people that complain aren't intending to be rude... but they end up looking that way to artists. (Especially to artists that are trying to make some extra $ to support their passions as well as their food, their rent/mortgage, car loans and other bills.) Art isn't just fun and games for a lot of the people here on this site. Many depend on their art for income. Questioning an artist's motives and decisions regarding pricing is insulting to their artistic skill and belittles the fact that they're trying to raise money to cover their financial responsibilities. Many of these artists are trying to pay for food and their college degree because they don't have parents or their parents are unable to support them; these artists have to fend for themselves. It's hard to understand when growing up and completely dependent on parents for food, shelter, and all the bonuses of childhood. Most people don't have things handed to them or changed on a whim; not during nor after childhood.

So when these comments arise, I don't get upset just because this is directed at me. I get upset for the artist community and what these comments end up doing to the community at large. For every artist that isn't strong enough to stand up and stick to their values, the prices drop, the value of art drops, and the artists lose. More expectations for artists to work for a few bucks (or :points:!) per hour of work! (Remember that 100 :points: is needed to get $1 in Paypal since DA takes a 20% cut.) I have vowed that I will not bend to the will of someone that obviously lacks social tact and doesn't value money or the work/talent/skill/time of an artist (beyond the benefit of some good hand-outs and other freebies.) The only time I have adjusted my prices were by my own will (if I saw that something stood out as being too low or high in relation to similar items.)

With all of these thoughts of how the comment devalues my work, my service, my skill, and my financial responsibilities as an artist, I do my best to keep myself calm and not show anger when writing my responses to these. It's never my intent to be mean (especially to people that don't know any better)... I'm simply trying to enlighten and broaden the minds of those who have taken advantage of the horribly low prices of other artists and expect EVERY artist to value their art the same way.

The following is what I replied to the most recent comment which was basically "why is the price so high?" (but with more exaggerated punctuation and tone):
Honestly, the price is far more than reasonable... Allow me to explain:

:bulletgreen: I've already had a number of purchasers buy this item at the current price. Changing the price now wouldn't be fair to anyone else who has purchased it.
:bulletgreen: I don't lower my standards of price just for :points:. 100:points: = $1
:bulletgreen: I worked over 3 hours on this piece. I have included animation, shading, line-art, and instructions so all that needs to be done is color the layers.
:bulletgreen: I make $20 per hour in my day job (which involves almost no creativity or talent.) And my fiance advises that I price my art accordingly. If you do the math, this is priced at 1/6th of the minimum price that my fiance would prefer that I charge.
:bulletgreen: If you don't have enough points but like my art, I have other pay-to-use deviations that may be in your price range.

And before you complain on any other artists' commissions and premium content files like this, please consider this journal: capukat.deviantart.com/journal… A little tact goes a long way in the art community!

Thank you and have a good day!

For future instances, I'll just link them to this journal so I don't have to re-type every time to (re-)validate my stance in my pricing. I encourage others who share my views to do the same. (Hopefully we will spend less time explaining our prices and we can do more art!)

</relatively calm yet passionate rant>

:iconeditplz: I just had a conversation with Music-lovinFox regarding pricing - people were telling them to lower their prices. I completely disagree with those complaints!

Here is some advice that I shared with them so YOU CAN STAND UP to people that complain about your prices:

  • Let your price sheet educate the watchers you have - Sometimes if you segment the prices out into different "add-on"s (like pricing a Full-color picture as $10 and offer the add-ons of $5 shading or $10 full shaded painterly style) people can see the value that is added and why they're paying for the extra work/skill/talent/time you provide!
  • Find watchers who won't complain - If the same people keep telling you to lower your prices, that just means you need to spread your exposure and find more supporters that understand and agree with your pricing. You can start by adding your commission artwork and price journals to more groups like Advertising-Anything and any of the groups that are dedicated to commissions like:
:iconcommission-world: :iconcommission-me-gently: :iconcommissionpromoter: :iconcommission-network:
:iconcommission-share: :iconpoint-commishes: :iconpaypal-commissioners:

Having trouble attracting more watchers? Most people won't wander randomly to your page. And there are a lot of people on this crazy site that may never see your work if you don't go to them first! They have to find you in someone's front page, journal, or :+fav:s. Watchers watch you because they like you as a person or they like your art. If you're having trouble getting noticed, there are a number of ways to self-promote on Deviant Art:
  1. BE NICE! - Stay positive, greet people, and thank them. Don't yell at people for commenting on your front page or for not knowing where something is (that scares people away D:)
  2. PRETTY PROFILE - Make your profile look nice so that people can easily find information that they want to see (like commission info) or something pretty/cute/funny. Try to reduce clutter (stamps, PLZ accounts, animated gifs, etc)
  3. GIVE LLAMAS - give them out, people sometimes come to check out your artwork or profile!
  4. SUPPORT ARTISTS - :+fav:, feature people's artwork, leave thoughtful/insightful comments, and watch lots of people - more people you do nice things for, the more likely they'll stop by your page and possibly watch you back^^
  5. DISPLAY YOUR ART EVERYWHERE - Add your artwork to LOTS of groups based on different subjects, themes, styles, and topics!
  6. GIVE POINTS - Hold contests where people win :points: or premium memberships or donate :points: to be featured in a group or on someone's page!
  7. COMMISSION PEOPLE - Commission lots of people or save up to commission popular artists to draw your OC - You may have a cool/unique/recognizable character but may not be noticed someone until you have your awesome character drawn by an amazing artist on DA!
  8. EVOLVE YOUR ART - If you show a level of determination to improve as an artist, that can be attractive to new watchers! One good place to start is the P.E.A.S. method! In that journal I have listed some of my :+fav:s gallery folders that contain reference photos and tutorials that can help with anatomy, shading, fur, and line-art! ^^

I hope that helps! :tighthug:

Starbuck - good update and backstory

Starbuck is my second Siberian Husky. Named after the character Agent Dana Scully in The X-files; her father called her "Starbuck" after a character in the famous novel "Moby Dick". She's a snuggly, sweet, and bossy little girl! I love how she makes her presence known as she bounces around and scream/howls and "Scolds" me with her low howl/growl/talk when I come back to visit once every few years as if to say: "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? Don't you dare leave us again!" I love "talking" with her and I even imitate her excited noises at my fiancé when I'm excited about going somewhere! lol
She and Arrow (my first, male Siberian Husky) were great inspirations for my artwork. I raised them from

I'm sorry I haven't been as responsive as usual and even a little snappy at times in the past few weeks. I've been depressed off and on since I heard the initial news that Starbuck had liver cancer. I figured that my only solution was to see her.stromie and I came to the conclusion that it would just be best for me to go alone and see her for a weekend (much cheaper for a single ticket and he was willing to help pay.)

I just called my aunt now with the hopes of scheduling a time for myself to go out and see Starbuck this weekend. She told me that she had been too upset to tell me sooner but Starbuck was put to sleep at the vet last week.

Starbuck hadn't been eating except small bits of food and pills that my aunt fed to her by hand. Starbuck had lost over 20lbs... she was weak and dehydrated (her paw pads were so cracked dry that she couldn't walk comfortably) but she was determined to go for walks every day (she had the determination that my mom did.) In her last two days, she kept my aunt awake as she cried from pain (even with morphine pills.) When my aunt took her to the vet, my aunt held Starbuck and pet her as she fell asleep in her arms so that she knew she was loved. "It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make." my aunt said. But I agreed that it was best for Starbuck; it wasn't fair to make her suffer any more.

A few days after Starbuck was laid to rest, my aunt was taking Arrow for a walk and she saw a circular rainbow around the sun. She said she has never seen anything like it; not in person and not on the internet either. She feels that maybe Starbuck and my mom (her sister) are now happy together.

I regret not being able to see her one last time but I'm far more relieved that she isn't suffering.

I want to thank everyone for their prayers, words of support, donations, and art contributions. You have all helped to add a little brightness while I've been trying to cope with the stress and worry. As I said to Nippon-Okami "I've lost my mother, my grandmothers, and many pets in the recent past but Starbuck has so much of an influence on my art and she's living with my aunt on the west coast - losing her is like losing a part of my art and a part of me." She will remain a part of my heart and one of the greatest contributors to my artwork.

I hope to use some of the donations toward seeing Arrow before he passes away (he is 13-years-old, losing his hearing, and living with arthritis and Cushing's disease) and some toward my friends InsaneRoman and AmuroNOVA (both of which are incredibly sweet people but have miserable family situations, poor living conditions, and not enough money for food or transportation.)

Now that I've stopped crying, I should go tell stromie the news. But before I go, I want to share the beautiful artwork that was done for Bengal (I hope to comment when I'm not so distraught)

:bigthumb378500463::bigthumb377993430:
I want to thank everyone for the continued support while I've been away! :huggle: I'm humbled by the kindness that I've seen -- through compassionate words, words of positivity, and more! I'm stunned at how many bases are being bought, paypal donations are being made, and :points: are being contributed! Thank you all so much! :tighthug:

Pittsburgh
I had a great time with stromie going to Pittsburgh, PA. ^^ I did a lot of reminiscing about the good times (and bad times) at University of Pittsburgh, we saw the Carnegie museum of Art and Natural History, took the incline up to look over Point Park and the whole city, enjoyed the Phipps Botanical conservatory (aka "the plant zoo" lol), and walked around the Three Rivers Arts Festival. It was great to stay with stromie's friend Steph and her boyfriend at her beautiful new house - we hardly get to see her and it was awesome meeting him! We didn't get much sleep in because we were chatting it up much of Friday (after the Penguins were eliminated from the NHL playoffs ;n; nuuu) and Saturday about geeky stuff, marriage, houses, and more!

Steph tried her best to convince us to move to Pittsburgh -- I told her to work her charm on stromie because I honestly don't need much convincing! xD I love that city!

We made a point of eating some good food and exploring more of the city than we have on previous trips. And we even got to meet up with a friend of my Dad's who I haven't seen in years -- he's been a friend of my dad's since before I was born and is almost like an uncle to me. He was happy to meet stromie  (I'm never shocked but always happy when friends and family approve of him and tell me how great he is!) We talked a little about my estranged father (we haven't talked since 2009) and we talked about general updates on our life together. :date:

We didn't get to go to the Zoo like I had hoped (haven't been there since I was very little) but we'll be sure to come back again! ^^ (even if we don't move there lol)

Bengal
On Sunday, we went back to see stromie's family in Buffalo, NY and visit with his 12+ year-old male orange-tabby cat "Bengal" one last time before he is put to sleep sometime this week. ;n; We had been told by his parents a month or so ago that Bengal had kidney failure and we've been spending as much time with him as we could since we knew he didn't have much longer with us.

Since we heard the news, his health has been getting worse and worse -- at this point, he has been peeing so much that his litterbox becomes a dense brick of soaked litter very early in the day and has no choice but to pee around the house. And you can even see how his once beautiful orange fur is now faded and greying. We can only imagine he's suffering.

stromie is a very strong person with his emotions but I can see how losing the only true pet that he's ever had is hard on him. And even though I have only known Bengal for two years, he's warmed up to my presence, enjoys when I pet him, and he has even taken naps with me when we visit the family. He's such a sweet old cat -- stromie and I will both miss Bengal.
I'm currently typing on my iPhone while stromie and I are driving to Pittsburgh for the weekend - after a tough week, it's good to spend time with friends and explore a city I love

I will try to respond to comments, thank people for donations and other support when I can. I really appreciate all of the support and comforting words that have been shared and my heart swells with happiness for how many awesome people I can be thankful for! People like you are a rarity on the Internet these days and are the reason I haven't given up on DA completly. Thank you all! :tighthug:

In my absence, please enjoy some of the wonderful art that has been done for me in the recent weeks!

Much LORF! :huggle:

She and Arrow (my first, male Siberian Husky) were great inspirations for my artwork. I raised them from puppies in Pennsylvania, showed them in dog shows for confirmation, and took hundreds of photos of them (almost completely with film cameras which is part of the reason why I don't have many photos on here - just a few of my favorites.)

When I had to go to school in New York and my mother moved out to California, she took the Siberians and our retired racing greyhound (Juice) with her. My mother passed away from breast cancer on the west coast mere days before my flight was scheduled to go back out to see her again. My dogs remained on the west coast and stayed with my Aunts and grandmother since I lived in apartments that were not pet-friendly.

After so many years, the dogs became a part of the family, grew older, Juice passed away, and I knew it was best for the rest of them to stay on the west coast rather than crate them up and put them on a stressful flight to live here (even if we lived in pet-friendly housing... and my fiancé wasn't allergic. lol) I've been able to visit a number of times and stromie has met them both two years ago and we visited a second time last year. Since then, my Aunt and Sibes have moved to Seattle where my Aunt lives happily retired and newly married to a very kind man. :date:

I got a troubling email and call from my Aunt earlier this week said that Starbuck wouldn't eat. X-rays at the vet showed the tumor on her liver was pushing into her stomach. My Aunt was afraid that Starbuck was uncomfortable from this and caused her to lose her appetite. She was also afraid Starbuck would starve herself because of it. She told me that Arrow seemed confused - he didn't know what was wrong with Starbuck but he knew it wasn't good. My Aunt didn't seem to indicate whether surgery was viable or if it was just too expensive. But surgery can sometimes be as traumatic if not more so than letting them live out the rest of their days despite the cancer.

Starbuck is 12-years-old, which is a good long life for a Siberian Husky! And although I've lost my mother to cancer, my grandmothers to old age and diabetes, and had many pets pass away or put to sleep due to illness, old age, and other suffering... and I even tried to get my mind around the fact that my Siberians would live with my Aunt until they pass away, this is still incredibly tough for me.

Part of it is due to shock - I was stunned that she was so ill and I had been expecting Arrow's failing health to take him away from us first. Part of it was because I don't want another loved one to die before I see them one last time.

I was trying to be strong and kept my emotions in - I didn't even let myself cry after the phone call. But days later after enough miscellaneous stress (drama from DA, anxiety about the merger at work that could leave me jobless in a few months, and mistakes at work) happened and made me break down and cry for much of the night on Tuesday and a even more Wednesday morning.

Just this morning, my Aunt sent another email with an update that she is doing much better: eating, able to walk once around the block before she gets tired, able to get on the couch where she likes to sleep, and even nudging Arrow out of the way when he's hogging the water bowl! (Arrow was just starting to become less afraid of her since she's been so placid and weak.) This is tremendous news! I know that it's only a small come back, I still won't be able to visit her in the next few months, and she's not cured but at least she's not going to starve herself and she can enjoy some of the things she loves for a little while longer. I will keep people posted! I hope that I can share more good news but even with the recent change in her mood, I know she has lived a happy long life and she cannot live forever.

I'm flattered, honored, and grateful to have so much support -- kind words, beautiful artwork, prayers, and selfless donations -- especially when I'm feeling so helpless.

Thank you all!

:iconeditplz: Thanks to the brilliant idea of Nippon-Okami, I will accept donations to raise money for tickets to Seattle to visit my dogs, my Aunt, and my new uncle!

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD FOR AMURONOVA

Tue May 14, 2013, 10:36 AM

AmuroNOVA is selling original artwork and prints to support herself. Her family situation is awful, she's trying desperately to get a job but no one is hiring her, she tries to do commissions but her parents yell at her for that... She desperately needs money for food and gas for her car...

It saddens me to see my friend and fellow aries artist in such a terrible situation.

There is no excuse not to help in some way or another!

:bulletorange: If you can buy artwork from her, please send her a note to discuss purchase originals or visit her Society6 account!
:bulletorange: If you can't afford to buy from her, please at least donate.
:bulletorange: If you can't afford to donate, please at least spread the word to those who might be able to afford it!
:bulletorange: :+fav:ing her journal, adding her artwork to groups, or writing journals of your own will be a tremendous help!

Hi guys! :dummy:

COMPUTER NEWS

stromie plans to build a computer for me. :la: He has never built a computer before and he's been wanting to make a powerful computer for himself for a while now... But my computer had to die all of a sudden soooo I get to be the guineapig! He just ordered $1,000+ worth of materials (computer case + motherboard + DVD optical drive + other parts) to make Craz's new digital art makin' monster machine of powerrrr! :dummy: Amazingly enough, this will be a much better computer than a store-bought Mac for a lot less $$! This will be a good amount of work on his part though. :P Hopefully he has enough helpful resources to make this go smoothly! Wish us luck!

FACEBOOK

Sorry if it seems pretty dead around here! D: I'm doing traditional art commissions since my computer died and I have no scanner so I've been taking photos with the iPhone and uploading to my Facebook Page a lot more frequently!

Come check it out! ^^

Bad news + Good news

HAVE FAQs AND OTHER QUESTIONS FOR ME? FEEL FREE TO POST THEM HERE: crazdude.deviantart.com/journa…

Bad news first >_< My computer is dying... fast.

Last night, I was working in Illustrator, saved my file, and it gave the grey warning of doom to shut down my Mac and start it back up. When I did, the screen was glitchy at the grey apple wake-up screen and didn't load past that. I forced the shut down again and it looked even worse! D: It was grey and completely glitched; couldn't even see the apple logo. ;n; stromie checked it out and made the diagnosis that it may be the video card - he was able to get my desktop files from my computer onto his computer thanks to the wireless sharing network he set up. (He rocks! He's not only my fiancé, he's my business partner, psychiatrist, personal trainer, and tech support! xD lol)

The hard drives appear to be fine, it's just the video card. So this means that I could either buy a new $50-250 video card to help my 5+ year old computer last another year... Or stromie is going to build me a new computer custom to what I need for my art (have I said that he rocks?) I'm thinking that we shouldn't patch my old Mac and just put the money toward the new computer. Which means that I may not be doing digital art at home for a while...

BUT HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS!

I'm probably going to have more time for traditional art and I'd be interested in opening the floor to a handful of commissions for traditional art badges, ACEOs, and keychains. :dummy: THESE WILL BE PAYPAL ONLY to start - I may open points commissions soon... I just gotta set some things up first. ^^

:iconeditplz: New questions and answers posted below!

Lately, I've been giving advice on the fly -- in notes, comments, and so on -- because I can't help it! I just love to help young artists! :la: But I figured that I could help EVEN MORE young artists if I could make a journal where all of Craz's tips, tricks, and advice can be found. ^^

Now... GIMME YO' QUESTIONS! :dummy: I'll work on answers and probably post them all in a whole new journal but there are a few listed below! ^^
Ask me about art and DA related stuff related to:

REALLY Frequent Questions or Statements
:bulletorange: I'm watching you! Can you please watch me back?
ANSWER: I only watch friends and artists that I admire or see have definite potential to grow. I usually stop by the galleries of the people that watch me more than I visit the people I watch! (Odd but true!) I am interested in seeing my watchers evolve their styles and techniques but I know it takes time. Be patient and keep improving - one day I could be idolizing YOU! ;P

:bulletorange: Can I reference your picture?
ANSWER: I'm happy that you ask rather than just doing it but I'd prefer that people not use my art as a reference since it doesn't have the best reference for anatomy and it wouldn't help you improve your art in the long run (helping artists improve is kind of what I'm all about. xP lol) Instead, I recommend taking a look at some Canine stock photos or Wolf stock photos for reference, check out the line-art at Templates-R-Us, and consider the P.E.A.S. Method! :dummy:

:bulletorange: Do you role-play?
ANSWER: Sorry, I don't Role-play. I barely have time to do art, and spend time with my fiancé with a full-time job and responsibilities of life. ^^

:bulletorange: Do you take requests? / Can you make me an icon? / Can you draw me a picture of my OC?
ANSWER: You can check my profile page for information about commissions and trades. I choose to open these whenever I feel that I have time and artistic drive. Gifts are my choosing and are usually a surprise for a close friend or for a person I admire. Keep in mind that they wouldn't be gifts if people asked for them. That would be a "request" and I don't take requests unless I ask for suggestions first.

:bulletorange: How do you make icons?
ANSWER: I use Adobe Photoshop (it's expensive unless you do an online trial - google "Adobe Photoshop Trial") I set the size of the canvas to be 50x50 pixels and the resolution is set as 72dpi (that's the standard resolution of the internet ^^) and make sure I use the pencil tool with the "Anti-alias" function turned off (for the pencil, lasso, select tool, and eraser) so that I make little pixel squares that have sharp edges and won't visually smooth the pixels (that Anti-aliasing makes art look less pixelated which isn't what we want for pixel stuff! xD) And I usually "Save for Web or Device" so that I can create a transparent .gif file. ^^

:bulletorange: Can I trade with you?
ANSWER: I don't generally trade for art these days. If you are a friend of 3+ years, I watch you, or your name is on my "WANT" list, I may consider trading with you!

:bulletorange: TAGGED!
ANSWER: Sorry, I don't have much time to do new tags these days but I have some factoids from previous tags! crazdude.deviantart.com/journa… crazdude.deviantart.com/journa…

Selling Commissions
:bulletorange: How do I get people to commission me?

:bulletorange: How much do I charge for commissions?

:bulletorange: Should I make a contract for my commissions and how would I go about making it?

:bulletorange: Should I require that customers pay me upfront or complete the work before payment? What are the risks and benefits?

:bulletorange: What should I include on my Terms of Service?

:bulletorange: Other than notes and e-mails, what other ways can commissioners submit information to me for commissions?

:bulletorange: I'm planning on taking commissions: at what point should I buy all the best art supplies?

:bulletorange: How do I make a Paypal donation button?

:bulletorange: Where did you buy your add ons? The lanyards, the key rings, etc?
ANSWER: For the most part, I got them at office supply stores (OfficeMax) but you can purchase them on Amazon.com and I've lucked out a few times and got free ones from various sources; I forgot where >.< ... I even bought the gold keychains from a store that accepts donations of unwanted craft materials and scraps that sells them back to artists at bargain prices! ^^ Stores like that are an amazing find! So many great supplies for almost no $$!

Artistic improvement techniques
:bulletorange: Should I go to art school?
ANSWER: It depends on what type of career you want to follow, what you expect from your life in terms of a financial future, how skilled you are as an artist, how determined you are to do art for a living (not just a hobby)...
Graphics degrees are required for a number of professions and some professions (like medical illustration) require more than just art courses to get a degree and qualify for the job. These are generally great paying jobs and some (like advertising design) can be extremely stressful. Artistic jobs and art schools are not for those who crack under pressure.
If you're interested in making a living off of your own art, I recommend taking courses for Marketing and Business. You have to take into consideration that you ARE your business and you have to operate like one; set your own prices so you make a fair living, advertise so that people know you're a working artist, etc. An artist that works independently of a company doesn't make a standard weekly or bi-weekly paycheck; they work on commission. Sometimes you have tons of commissions and can't keep up with demand. Other times, you have a lull and you wonder if you'll be able to afford your next meal. It makes most sense for someone that desires an independent art career to skip art college, read up on business skills, and work on creating a loyal customer base. And when things are slow, work on improving your techniques and skills. Going to school and paying thousands of dollars for an education can be costly and bills are hard to recover from once you graduate.
For me, I went to college for Printing; a field that is related to art but not demanding of my creativity or overly stressful. Packaging is a job that pays well, has me working in Illustrator but not putting me on the spot for new ideas (like advertising), and allows me to feel comfortable financially so that I can create art for fun! ^^ I work on art much better and enjoy it more when I know my life doesn't depend on it.

:bulletorange: What steps can I take to improve my art on my own?
ANSWER: See my journal on the P.E.A.S. Method to Artistic Self-improvement: crazdude.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletorange: How do I improve my canine anatomy (paws, faces, legs, etc)?

Art materials, technology, terminology, storage, maintenance, etc.
:bulletorange: What are the best brands of art materials in your opinion? (Colored pencils, markers, paper, pens, erasers, etc)

:bulletorange: I don't have Adobe software; just MS Paint. I can't do anything good with that, can I?
ANSWER: OF COURSE YOU CAN! siriuslylostwerewolf is an incredible inspiration to me and she does some amazing work in the Pixel-based world of MS Paint! Pixel icons can also be created in MS Paint! ^^

:bulletorange: What's an ACEO?
ANSWER: An ACEO is best described at this site: www.aceo.org

:bulletorange: How do I make something with vectors?
ANSWER: There are a number of tutorials available for vector artwork at vector-artists and I'm sure there are more on DA if you search for "vector tutorial". I use Illustrator for my vectors but it seems that SAI, Photoshop and other programs have vector capabilities as well. ^^

Profile page coding
:bulletorange: How did you make your profile look so cool?

:bulletorange: How do you make it so that when I click on an image, it opens a new web page?

:bulletorange: How do you make a Paypal donation button?
ANSWER: Here's the info on how you set up the link and what features you can include (like if people can write a note to you) --> www.paypal.com/kh/cgi-bin/webs…
As for the button graphic itself, I found a button on google images and altered it to meet my tastes (Made it smaller, centered the "donate" type", etc). ^^
To associate the link with the button, you need to type the following:
<*a href*="*PUTDONATIONLINKHERE"*><*img src*="PUTBUTTONIMAGELINKHERE"*><*/a>

Then remove the * symbols. I like to think of it as: the destination envelops the image source of the button that takes you to that destination when you click it. ^^

Interacting on DA
:bulletorange: What do you do to maintain a personal code of ethics and way to keep being polite (even with silly questions or requests?)
ANSWER: I have been on this site for over 7 years and I try to make information readily available but I know there are new members (some of which are very young, may not know to look for commission info, or have only interacted with artists that only take requests) and I like to enlighten them but also interact with them with as much patience and positivity as if I just joined DA myself! ^^ stromie tells me not to answer "silly/redundant questions or requests" -- that they "aren't worth my time" -- but I don't want to ignore people and I don't like being mean! &hearts; This is a much better way to keep friendly and not scare people away than being mean, rude, or just plain ignoring them. D: I never like it, so I never want to do it! ^^

If you come across art that you don't like, take this old journal of mine into consideration before leaving a nasty comment: crazdude.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletorange: How can I attract more watchers even if my art isn't that good?
ANSWER: Most people won't wander randomly to your page. They have to find you in someone's front page, journal, or :+fav:s. Watchers watch you because they like you as a person or they like your art. If you're having trouble getting noticed, there are a number of ways to self-promote on Deviant Art:
    • BE NICE! - Stay positive, greet people, and thank them. Don't yell at people for commenting on your front page or for not knowing where something is (that scares people away D:)
    • PRETTY PROFILE - Make your profile look nice so that people can easily find information that they want to see (like commission info) or something pretty/cute/funny. Try to reduce clutter (stamps, PLZ accounts, animated gifs, etc)
    • GIVE LLAMAS - give them out, people sometimes come to check out your artwork or profile!
    • SUPPORT ARTISTS - :+fav:, feature people's artwork, leave thoughtful/insightful comments, and watch lots of people - more people you do nice things for, the more likely they'll stop by your page and possibly watch you back^^
    • DISPLAY YOUR ART EVERYWHERE - Add your artwork to LOTS of groups based on different subjects, themes, styles, and topics!
    • GIVE POINTS - Hold contests where people win :points: or premium memberships or donate :points: to be featured in a group or on someone's page!
    • COMMISSION PEOPLE - Commission lots of people or save up to commission popular artists to draw your OC - You may have a cool/unique/recognizable character but may not be noticed someone until you have your awesome character drawn by an amazing artist on DA!

:bulletorange: How do I deal with negative people? (avoiding flamewars, dealing with thieves, dealing with trolls, demanding people)

:bulletorange:  How do I make my art safe and decrease my chances of my art or characters being stolen?

:bulletorange: What happens if someone infringes on your copyright?

All about Craz!
:bulletorange: Crazdude's life - interests, experiences, education, habits, meeting stromie

:bulletorange: Do you Role Play?
ANSWER: Nope! xD I don't have time to role play between art, work, my life with my fiancé, and my social life! ^^

:bulletorange: How did you come up with your OC/fursona?
ANSWER: I have a wolf as my fursona/OC ^^; I know that there's a huge backlash against "ordinary grey wolf" characters but I started before I knew it was popular - Heck, I didn't even know that other people drew themselves and friends as animals (except I was aware of this in the Furry community but I didn't consider myself a furry at the time.)

Back before I knew about DA or FA, I was raising my Siberian Huskies for dog show competitions. They were a significant influence on my art and inspirational to me. ^^ I was also obsessed with Kiefer Sutherland at the time. I was friends with a lot of people on a message board dedicated to him and we planned to see him in person in NYC! I was so excited, I wanted to draw us meeting him, having drinks with him, and so forth! ^^ I wasn't much of a human-artist so I drew him as a Siberian Husky my friends and I as wolves (because we were a pack of girls on the prowl :D lol) I took to drawing my friends and myself as wolves far after that event.

A year or so later, I was advised to join DA. Little did I know, it was the height of the wolfaboos and my art was surprisingly well accepted! I started giving my OCs markings and accessories (mostly so my watchers were able to distinguish which plain grey wolf was me and which ones were my friends! xD) I liked keeping them as different shades of grey since it's easier to draw/sketch with a pencil. ^^

Only in the past few years have I noticed the backlash; anti-wolf statements and accusations of being another wolf-obsessed wolfaboo. I never considered myself a wolfaboo -- I'm really just a lazy artist xD -- But since I started drawing myself as Craz-wolf, she's really stuck to me and I do my best to state my case that: I'm not a wolfaboo, I'm not obsessed with wolves, and that Siberian tigers are actually my favorite animal! lol It's just because my Siberian Huskies made such good drawing subjects!</i>

:bulletorange: How long have you been drawing?
ANSWER: The oldest recorded drawing I have was from when I was 2 years old! ^^ So I guess I've been drawing since 1988!

:bulletorange: What colored pencils do you use?
ANSWER: I generally use Crayolas with occasional Prismacolor pencil work! ^^ I'm starting to be more confident with my Prismacolor set (the set is so huge and there are so many different shades and hues, it was intimidating xDDD)

:bulletorange: What references do you use to draw your animals?

:bulletorange: How much do you practice drawing any given day?

:bulletorange: Wait! You're a GIRL? why is your nickname "Crazdude"?
ANSWER: My dad had a band called "Crazy Daze" so crazy was a normal and positive part of our household vocabulary lol. I used to say "crazy" a LOT in middle-school. I would call my friends "dude" even if they were girls and they'd call me "dude" even though I'm a girl. I tried to make my first AOL account when I was 10yrs-old and I wanted it to be "Crazydude" but it was taken already. So I dropped the "y" and gave that a try: Crazdude became my username. I wanted "Crazdude" to be my nickname in school but it never was truly used until I was on Kiefer Sutherland message boards when I was in High School and made friends that called me "Crazdude" and "Craz" xP lol! I admit that a lot of people see my name and think I'm a guy and are probably thinking: "This person doesn't seem crazy at all!"  I used to say that I'm not fully crazy (I'm missing a "Y" for crying out loud! xD) or that in this insane world, the sane people go crazy (like me! lol)

:bulletorange: What drawing programs do you use?
ANSWER: I use Adobe software for all of my digital art! ^^ Vector-based images are done in Illustrator and anything else I make is done in Photoshop!

:bulletorange: What cool things do you have in mind for your wedding?
ANSWER: I don't have many plans yet but I know I want a bubble-maker and want to give little bottles of bubbles out as party favors! xD

:bulletorange: When are you getting married?
ANSWER: We've been terrible at planning this thing lol - I think we're shooting for next year around this time... but the idea seems to change constantly and we're too lazy to do any real scheduling work! xD

:bulletorange: Why do you call me "bub"?
ANSWER: See my journal on The Story of Bub: crazdude.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletorange: How did you come up with Craz-wolf and Rafsca?

I won't answer inappropriate questions about me or questions that aren't art or DA related (like how do I buy a car?)... I won't list any questions that have answers that can be discovered by typing into Google or the DA search engine...
but if it makes me think of something that I CAN give advice on, I'll share that instead. ;P

Much LORF!

:iconeditplz: And now I have decided to add a widget to my front page! :dummy: Feel free to keep commenting with your info! I can place you on the list - This way people can sort through you guys by payment option and by price limit. ^^

Also, when you close commissions, let me know so I can remove you from the commissions-open widget so people don't get confused:
"Closed?? But Crazdude said your commissions were open!" :iconwhutplz:

That would be bad for everyone involved!

:iconeditplz: SCREW YOU, LIVESTREAM! D:< I'm using Join.me for now! :D

It worked very nicely last night for my first Join.me stream! I may convert back to Livestream once they figure out their terrible issues (i.e. crashing whenever I try to open the application :P) because I miss sharing my crazy music and having an unlimited number of viewers. But for now Join.me works very well.

To make up for the fact that only 10 people can watch at a time, I'll try to have long streams and continue to make them at random times of the day so we get some new peeps in with every session! ^^

Much LORF to those who stopped by or wanted to stop by last night! :blowkiss: I'm stunned about such a good turn-out in such a small time! (9 people in about 10 minutes? CRAZY! :faint:)

OH AND MORE GIFTY ARTS TO SEE! YAY! :iconballoondogplz:
