The battle against the Dragon-Leviathan beneath the Canopy Ocean

This piece explores one of the climactic scenes from Act 2, “Kabaal”, Episode 2, “Into the Depths of the Canopy Ocean”, of my ongoing dark fantasy campaign, Chroniques du ChaOs, based on scenarios published in the French magazine Casus Belli and written by Chris & Pat.

Far beneath the Canopy Ocean, the heroes finally discover the truth hidden below the living sea.

What first seemed like a strange natural wonder, an impossible ocean of leaves, currents, drifting light and ancient vegetal memory, conceals the remains of something far older. Beneath its green depths lies a deserted Titan city-ship, both vessel and metropolis, built on a scale no human civilization could ever have achieved. Its vast halls, sealed biotopes, impossible machines and silent domes were not only meant to preserve life, but to study it.

The Titans of Étherne did not merely observe the peoples of this world. They experimented on them.

Within the city-ship, the heroes uncover the remains of a vast project dedicated to humanoid adaptation. Each preserved biome was part sanctuary, part laboratory, part archive. Ice, desert, forest, ocean and other hostile environments had been recreated beneath sealed domes, testing how mortal races could endure, transform, survive, or be reshaped by worlds that were never meant for them.

But the city-ship is not empty.

Its ancient guardians still stir, and at the heart of the city-ship lies the portal chamber, a monumental hall built for beings far greater than men. There, vast gateways open onto impossible destinations. One reveals the cold void of space, scattered with asteroids and the shattered remains of a dead celestial body. Another opens onto a frozen world of ice and pale light. A third burns with the red glare of a volcanic crater. And one last portal remains sealed, its ancient iris only slightly forced open, offering the heroes a fleeting glimpse of their homeland beyond.

That sealed portal is their way out.

Unable to open it by mortal strength, the heroes awaken one of the city-ship’s ancient sentinel constructs: a towering technomantic war-golem built for beings far greater than men. Their plan is desperate but simple. Enter the construct. Take control of the relic. Use its colossal force to break the sealed gateway open and escape the city-ship before the ruins collapse around them.

But the awakening of the golem does not go unnoticed.

The Dragon-Leviathan, a mechanical sea-serpent of terrifying scale, rises from the depths of the city-ship like a nightmare from a forgotten age. Half war machine, half predator, it breaks into the portal chamber, coiling through the titanic architecture with metallic jaws open wide, its segmented body threaded with unstable etheric energy.

Seated within the luminous cockpit, the heroes become the will inside the machine, four fragile silhouettes commanding a relic older than their kingdoms, older perhaps than the histories they thought they knew.

Around them, the portal chamber trembles. Gateways flicker. Alien glyphs flare across deep indigo metal. The frozen world, the volcanic crater, the asteroid field and the half-open road home burn around the battlefield like windows into impossible realities. Beneath those alien arches, surrounded by ruins, collapsing platforms and the pressure of the green ocean above, the heroes stand against the Dragon-Leviathan.

Not as soldiers.

Not as chosen ones.

But as desperate adventurers trapped inside a dying miracle, trying to force open the only path back to their world while an ancient guardian monster tears the chamber apart.

This is not only a battle against a monster.

It is the moment when the heroes begin to understand that the deepest secrets of their world were not buried by time alone.

They were hidden.

And some of them are waking up again.
