Description
Chara was dead to begin with.
A bad start to be sure, but worse she found herself tethered to a foul-mouthed, foul-brained wee rotter with an appetite for mayhem.
I’ve always loved the Chara is the narrator theory from Undertale; it adds so much depth to their character and the game’s story, giving them a bittersweet redemption story. While I’ve seen plenty of fanart with a Ghost/Narrator character paired up with a meek, innocent Frisk, I’ve never seen them having to deal with a jerk Frisk. The ones who ate the Snowman piece in front of him, swore at Mettaton, beat monsters up and generally made a nuisance of themselves. I felt it was time to fix that.**
Both the narrator’s dialogue and Chara’s lines at the end of the genocide route paint them as formal and prim. Let’s face it, after whatever she went through on the surface, Chara would revel in the trappings of royalty and power. So imagine her horror finding her ghost stuck with a little menace who hits on her Mum just to get a rise out of her. It didn't help Frisk burned down Undyne’s house, an act that was 100% an unfortunate mishap on Frisk’s part and not at all an attempt to get even for the dozens of times Undyne killed her.**
Chara being Chara, she wasn’t the easiest partner to get along with, grouch, stubborn and prissy. Plus she laughed her arse off the first dozen times Frisk died.
For all her antics, menace Frisk still has a soft side. Chara might have been a mouthy rotter, but she was still a troubled child in need of help. For all their good intentions, Asgore and Toriel put a lot of weight on Chara’s shoulders, calling her the future of humans and monsters. Frisk helped her accept herself as a flawed, troubled kid who needed help.
And that came from an unlikely source: Alphys. The two never really interact much in fanworks, which is interesting. Alphys is the only character aside from Frisk to discover the truth of Chara and Asriel’s plan. While she’s uncomfortable with it, I figured she’s also relate to Chara, given their shared struggles with guilt, suicidal ideation, and expectations. Plus as a scientist she's best suited to helping Chara and Frisk deal with their situation (Frisk's not thrilled at having a stuck up wee ghost girl following her around for the rest of her life).
What kind of shenanigans should these two dopes get in next? How will they adjust to a chaotic post pacifist existence? And will the other monsters discover the truth about Chara? And will Frisk stop being a wee bastard (Not bloody likely).
** The narrator scorning Frisk for scoffing monster candy in the ruins helped inspire this: You took more candy. How disgusting.. You take another piece. You feel like the scum of the earth... Look at what you have done.
** Being the kindly soul she is, not only did Frisk revive Undyne in Hotland but even added her own 'Homemade Lemonade (With an extra dose of urea) to the cup.
I FRIGGIN LOVE CHARA IN THIS ARTSTYLE THEY'RE SO SCRUNKLY
