The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 50
Bruyère lowered her pen and examined the parchment before her. She had worked on the report since her return to Rocqueburne and she wanted it to be absolutely perfect. She checked her accounting one more time, praying that the other five times she reviewed the paper before had eliminated any errors. She breathed a sigh of relief as she reached the bottom of the page. Everything added up perfectly. She lifted the parchment up to the window, enamored with the way the light gently passed through everything but the ink. Bruyère wrapped the precious document in a leather carrier and pushed her chair under her writing desk. Alexandros would return to the castle soon. Bruyère couldn’t wait to see the look on his face once he approved it for review with the Emperor. If he accepted the account of the tragic incident at Masse Manor than it was possible that the little town surrounding it would fall under the rule of the King of Rocqueburne.
Bruyère looked to the window

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 49
Hayden had always expected that should he ever be lucky enough to experience something so wonderful that his world would stand still. Everything would come to a halt, frozen in a moment of absolute perfection that he could remember forever. The universe treated him much more kindly than he could have imagined. Instead of standing still, Hayden experienced quite the opposite. For a few brilliant moments he became aware of his own movements within the greater spheres of the heavens. Hayden and Bruyère were two celestial beings in harmony with the mysteriously beautiful dance of the planets and the stars.
The moment was short-lived. Loretta had noticed several of the guards waking up in a haze after the blast. She had already gathered up her husband, supporting him over her shoulder. “Hurry! We have to get out of here!” she urged them both as she struggled with Nick. The injured man laughed as he adjusted his footing, alleviating Loretta’s burden. “They’

Princess Daisy and Adamanteus - Part 1
“Your Highness? Princess Daisy! Are you ready for your appointment?”
The nervous handmaiden was not accustomed to addressing royalty directly. She had been sent by her superior to prepare the princess for a meeting with an ambassador from a small neighboring kingdom beyond the western mountains. The sheer importance of the meeting weighed heavily on the handmaiden’s mind.
“Princess? I don’t mean to intrude, but—”
“It’s quite alright, lovely!” came a voice from behind an elaborate ornamental changing screen. The princess stood up, her long blond hair merrily bobbing up and down across the screen’s upper edge. “If you would be so kind, would you assist me in tightening this corset?”
The princess emerged from behind her changing station, revealing her outfit. The handmaiden was momentarily speechless. Princess Daisy was renowned for her unique and pioneering sense of fashion but her latest ensemble was almost to

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 48
Dominic and Hilliard couldn’t believe their luck.
The two Rocqueburne guards had been chosen as members of the party investigating the alleged activities at Masse Manor. According to their superiors there was enough evidence to suggest that the lord and lady of the manor were conducting a secret ritual involving human sacrifice. The rumors began spreading about what the ritual could be. Hilliard overheard a member of the Rocqueburne court gossiping about the “cannibals of the north” stealing people away and eating them during the full moon. Dominic eavesdropped on a cook who frightened his staff with tall tales of witchcraft and evil magic. Everyone seemed to have their own version of what horrible things were happening there.
Dominic and Hilliard were far less concerned with what they would encounter than their fellow guardsmen were. To them, it was far more important to remember what they were presently escaping. This was the first night they had escaped the punishm

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 47
Nick, Loretta, and Bruyère gathered around Hayden’s motionless body hoping to detect even the smallest trace of life. Bruyère grabbed his shoulders and shook him gently. The final strike against the homunculus had taken a massive toll on his body. The monster attempted to counter the blow, dragging its inhuman arm up to knock Hayden out of the way at the last second. The force of the attack and the destruction of the corrupted philosopher’s stone left Hayden with a seared scar that ran from the bottom of his cheek to the top of his forehead. A streak of white hair continued where the scar ended.
“Hayden? Please get up. I know you’re still in there” whispered Bruyère. She wiped a tear from her face and choked back a sob as she surveyed his face. “Please…”
She felt a very gentle hand on her shoulder as she touched Hayden’s face. Loretta slowly pulled her up and turned her away from Hayden. Bruyère buried her face i

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 46
“Another beautiful day in Redstable, isn’t it?”
Hayden sat up and quickly looked around. The great hall had completely melted away, leaving him in an infinite corridor of darkness. He felt as though he had been asleep for years.
“Looks like one last rainstorm for the season. Better get going on the hay!”
The voice was a familiar one. He recognized its owner as the old street vendor who set up shop close to the work dormitories.
“It’s good to see you, Hayden!” he exclaimed, waving happily. The street vendor reached into his cart and produced a small bread roll filled with ground mutton, nuts, and spices. “I haven’t seen you around lately! Here, this one is on me!” The street vendor tossed Hayden the roll which he consumed almost instantly. Hayden’s benefactors at Masse Manor were less than accommodating.
“Where’ve you been? I haven’t seen you in ages!” the man asked as Hayden devoured his foo

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 43
The first day of autumn in the Kingdom of Rocqueburne was a celebrated occasion. The Märzenbier brewed in the spring was ready to tap for the farmers preparing themselves for harvest time. The fields would spring to life as people celebrated the bounty of the land, holding bonfires and singing songs long after the sun had set. The shorter days and the cold winds did little to dampen the spirits of the harvesters. Every ray of sunshine was cherished as it warmed the workers and every cool breeze was appreciated as they stopped to rest.
It wouldn’t be long until winter gripped the kingdom for a few dreary, miserable months. Every soul in Rocqueburne knew of the hardships winter brought with it and every soul knew that it would not be long until they were subjected to the north wind’s frigid advance. Despite the impending dread the peasants of the kingdom chose to celebrate life instead of cowering in fear. Autumn was much more a celebration of summer’s glorious rei

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 42
Gaston had never been so angry in his entire life.
For years he had practiced alchemy and for years the secret of the philosopher’s stone eluded him. His utility as a metallurgist and his rudimentary skills as an apothecary were the only things keeping him employed by the King of Rocqueburne. The philosopher’s stone was a phantasm, an intangible metaphor for transmutation that transcended its alleged powers. A spiritually minded alchemist could accept that the philosopher’s stone existed only in the mind. The stone was the process, not the product; the journey rather than the destination. That’s what Gaston had trained himself to believe after spending years failing to produce an actual working stone, at least. Hayden’s apparent success had shaken this belief.
The old man couldn’t stand it. How could someone so common and low produce such quality work? He remembered the immense size and smoothness of the hermetically sealed vessel Hayden created from

The Alchemist and the Bookkeeper - Chapter 41
Bruyère had never been a religious person. She attended mass and studied the Bible just like everyone else who worked in the castle but there was something about the church that didn’t sit well with her. She had a hard time explaining it to her friends and an even harder time explaining it to her superiors. Fear, of course, was the primary reason she kept her concerns to herself. Despite their mission to save lost souls the church had a reputation for punishing members of the flock rather than helping them. Dissent and doubt were their ancient enemies.
As Bruyère hung from the wall of her cell she thought about the deaths of the disciples. According to the priest in the Rocqueburne Cathedral only John died of natural causes and even he was once thrown in a vat of boiling oil. Judas had committed suicide and the others were all murdered. It seemed as if not even the chosen followers of the Son of God could escape the horrors of the world. Evil was alive and well and by a

Halloween of 2018 can go straight to hell.
"One of those days" has turned into "one of those years."
Have I evolved over the years or have I pretended to be someone else?

Would I be happier being myself or do I need to become something better?

Is there any difference between the man I am today and the boy who climbed trees and caught frogs after school?

Who am I?

It's everyone's favorite mechromancer, Gaige! Looks like she ran into some spiderant trouble while prowling Pandora. Gotta watch out for those things!

Found this in a folder from years ago and took a picture. Figured I need to get back into art. This needs work on so many levels but at least I'm posting!
