The Lord's Pet, Moche, Peru, AD 700

Litters were a common mode of transport in ancient Peru. Only high-ranked persons were allowed to use them. This litter of a Moche lord is made of wood covered with gold sheet. Dangling gold discs attached to the sides of the litter sparkle in the sunlight. The lord’s pet, a pampas cat, is sitting on a cushion which is covered with finely woven textiles.
Reconstruction is based on archaeological remains and iconography.

very interesting, although I can tell you from personal experience are very restless these small cats and would be costly and difficult, pet worthy of a great lord, very good drawing

muy interesante, aunque te puedo decir por experiencia personal son muy inquietos estos pequeños gatos y serian una mascota costosa y dificil, digna de un gran señor, muy bueno el dibujo

indeed, very wild animals, and in present days definitely unsuitable as pets. The drawing is based on two Moche fineline paintings showing a pampas cat sitting in the litter of a lord. One is in the Museo Larco at Lima, the other in the Museum of Ethnology at Munich. Both date approximately AD 700.

Thanks for your great comment and for sharing your experience. Always welcome!

Ah, I love this~ your attention to detail on the litter is great - the texture on the sides and the fabric - and, of course, the cat is adorable~
