I always thought the character select art for Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 had a very specific look, so I thought it would be fun to try and create a few characters in that same style.
I am incredibly surprised this hasn't been done before (or at least posted online anywhere). I used Source Gaming's article on the Smash 64 character select artwork as an inspiration and a guide for creating these characters. I would use art that would have existed around the time of or before Smash 64's release. If there wasn't anything that I felt worked, I would use something reminiscent of that (for example, Falco and Pit were created from Super Smash Bros. Melee trophies). It was fun replicating the lighting and color scheme. I also enjoyed trying to make some of the source of the artwork hard to identify or give it a somewhat 3D look. Some of the characters I considered making but did not (at least this time around) were Meta Knight, Saki, Dr. Wright, Toad, Zelda, Wario, Sheik, Meowth, Bomberman, James Bond, and Dash Rendar.
I hope this is entertaining to look at. For me, seeing the finished product reminds me of old internet hoaxes from the early days.
Also, while I was making this, I actually listened to a few midi files of songs of Melee, Kid Icarus, and Super Nintendo games being played with the Super Smash Bros. 64 soundfont. It was incredibly satisfying and pushed me to make this as realistic as I possibly could!
