Description
The world swam back into focus through a haze of pain and disorientation. Valeria's eyes fluttered open, a throbbing ache radiating from the back of her skull where she had been clubbed unconscious. The bright, relentless sun of the wasteland sky pierced her vision, forcing her to squint and turn her head away, sending fresh waves of pain coursing through her.
Memory returned in flashes: the ambush, the struggle, the moment her own raider instincts betrayed her to an enemy's lucky blow. She had been the predator turned prey, and now she lay, bound and vulnerable, atop a makeshift stretcher formed from a hefty wooden pole.
Her ears, still ringing, slowly began to distinguish the surrounding sounds. Voices argued heatedly above her, coarse and unsympathetic, debating her fate as though she were mere spoils of war, not a feared leader who had once commanded the dunes with iron resolve.
Valeria struggled against her bonds, but the ropes held tight, biting into her wrists and ankles. With each passing moment, her situation grew more perilous. The arguing ceased abruptly, and in its place, an ominous consensus formed, spoken in hushed tones that did not bode well. She caught snippets of their conversation, words like "sacrifice" and "example," words that turned the pit of her stomach cold.
The ropes shifted, pulling taut as her captors hoisted the pole onto their shoulders. Valeria's world tilted, the horizon spinning as she was lifted parallel to the unforgiving ground. She could see the faces of the men now, roughened by the apocalypse, eyes devoid of mercy.
They began to move. Valeria could only squirm in her bondage.
