Morning Concepteez,

Firstly, I'd like to wish you all a very Happy New year, I hope you're all well and are having a magnificently creative 2016 :cake:

Now I've been on Hiatus for a few months due to moving for a new job, then participated in a rather embarrassing and costly pc explosion.
Gourger has been fighting tooth and nail to keep this group running, he's done a fantastic job so far and we're very excited at what comes next.

Now it's time to get cracking. ;)

We'll be starting up Contests, starting anew with exciting things to be won, friends to be met, collaborations, critique and themes with a twist.
But first we need your input, this has always been a group focused on our Concept Art community and we'll be working towards achieving more with that goal in mind.
So any suggestions you (yes you) have then we're all ears, we welcome all and any feedback. This includes;

:bulletgreen: Critique on the group
:bulletgreen: What you think we need to do to move forwards
:bulletgreen: What you want from us as a community, where you would like to be in a years time.

Every Conceptee is valued, and your views are equally important to us.
If you've been with us for half a decade, or fresh off the boat this morning, you're all welcome and we encourage everyone to have a say in how we shape the future of this group.

Now on the topic of contests, this will be a time of celebration for all of us, as we're nearing our 10,000 strong Conceptee membership!
There will be big prizes when we hit this milestone. Some of the runner up prizes include Subscriptions, Points and Features. For these to commence we also need your input;

:bulletgreen: Tell us what you liked about the old contest
:bulletgreen: What you think we should change
:bulletgreen: Whether you liked feedback, or want something else we've overlooked.

:bulletwhite:*Use the contest every 2 weeks to improve your skills and then compare it with other artist to see yourself progress. You never know when you might get hired. :bulletwhite:

The timer at the top of the page is your deadline for coming up with anything and everything you can suggest before the first contest starts ;)

We want you to voice your thoughts on the group, including contest themes here in the comments.
Don't be shy -tell us what you think and don't forget to vote! - conceptworld.deviantart.com/jo…

Have fun, we want to see your concepts!

I just dropped by to see if you had a comps running, guess I'll have to wait a bit longer :(

I've not entered any before so I have no comment on any of your previous competitions.

My 2 cents is that you go more easy on submissions.  You know, we're not all Craig Mullinses here. :D
Yeah, I agree that the group has to keep and gradually improve its standards. Well, back in 2012 I had won several CW contests, but since then wasn't able to get through.. What's up? :)

This is no complaint by all means. No. Just some thoughts, since you asked what opinions do we have. :)

Hey mate, good to see you again :) We'll take this on board and figure out a way to make it fair for everyone.

Back when you mentioned was roughly when sketchathons started rolling, the magazine contests etc, we were focussed maybe too heavily on the best of the best, and I think maybe we forgot that we had a large following of people who wanted to learn and improve with us.
I'd like to look at this in more depth to improve what we have but also like you said make it fair to give people a chance, in the comments below a few Conceptees have suggested different sections to make it harder for the more advanced to dominate the contests, you all have a valid point, we'll bring it up in the meeting to come up with a solution, how does that sound? :)

Hey Bee,
ncie 2 see u too :)

Idk, now that you mention it - I do like to see the best stuff in group feed, technically superb, etc, but I also like to see quirky stuff which may be not so flawless, but has personality. :)

We'll try to do something about this, I've got back in touch with Gd and Gourger, so things should start moving soon :)
Yeah it was nice to see all of the artists work we could admire in the feed, but maybe it became slightly too elitist, admins discuss things before they refuse them now, no bad thing, so bringing in quirky and different things is an awesome idea, freshen it up a bit ;)

Hei Edarneor, I understand your complain, but I think that this hard selection is more related to another fact. I think the general level of the artwork it really increase its standard in those years. Back in time I've seen a lot of amazing work that have been totally surpass by other young artist in a so few time. The curve of quality really rise up the bar on those time, thanks to the fact that a lot of software had become more friendly use than in the old time. It's a little sad to admit that what we think is good can be easy overcome by other artist that have the chance to learn fast, but we need to keep it up and stay in line with the time we live or at least try to be; How doesn't able to do it...well risk to succumb to the over whelming quantity of picture that every day social media vomit on us. You've to find a way to hit your audience and improve your arts skill. I'm not saying that you're not good, but I'm sure that you can do better; How much better ? Better that now. If you don't take the art path as a personal challenging you wont improve. This is a big ocean full of shark and if you don't learn how to survive you'll be swallow, chew and trow away. I know that it could be sounds a little bit cynical, but that is what it is. I'm saying that because I've seen a lot of artist give up, or close them self in their own comfort zone because they fell safe. But I think that a real artist take every piece a s a personal challenge to improve and be more of what he was use to be. If you don't evolve you'll die, this is a simple rule that every environment seams to respect, and there is no difference here. Yes of course we are not all Craig Mullins here, but we ca try to be. The research to perfection is the perfection itself. If you want rise your quality, there is no other way around than work more and study hard. There are no secret trick or else, just draw more. I always think my all artwork look like shit ! And I trow away so many piece, that I'm barely able to count it. But I still think that I'm not good at it...and that is the thing that make me think that I'm the god path. If you already think that you're good, and that thoughts comes from your self confident felling...not sure how much this mental attitude could help you to improve and go on.  Clashing with the hard surface of reality can be really tough but is necessary to change and star accepting the fact that we are all in the same boat, all struggling to find a way to reach the surface. Soon you'll discover that even the greatest have the same feeling and they never consider them self as the biggest artist. I was reading a really interesting book of one of the great artist ever, Patrick J. Jones (I really suggest you to read it "Oil painting technique"), and he always repeat in the book to take each new artwork as a new experience to improve and go ahead your limit. I really think that this should be the right attitude to face not only art, but life in general. If you're living a flat line life, never challenging yourself, never improve, never compare your level with the high standard you wont improve. Craig Mullins didn't born able to paint in that way, he become what he's now. He chose to improve, fight against the best, study hard and always face new opportunity as a chance to improve and give the best.

You should take this group as a chance too, look at it more as a challenge that just a self promotion windows. This is why this group born and continue to exist. One things we always provide is a feedback service. So fell free to ask when you're not sure about something. We always try our best to help other artist to improve.

Hope Ive clarify our policy and I doesn't seams to you to paternalistic. Sorry I've been too harsh, but I like to be direct and honest, that just copy and past 2 line of text.

Let me know what you think. For any other doubt, feel free to ask. Have a nice day :D

Thank you for your in-depth comment Vincenzo, but it was not necessary to write that detailed. It's all pretty obvious. I don't think you need a Patrick J. Jones book to get to that :D
I know this "always improve" thing. I'm using it.

However, I don't think that getting your submissions through into one group or other, is an utimate challenge. This way you put the course of your art into the judgement of other people (the mods) which, imo, should never happen.
I think a worthy challenge for improvement is finding you own "thing", or being able to say with your art what you want to say or doing something no one has done before.

"
overwhelming quantity of picture that every day social media vomit on us."  funny that you use the word "vomit", because it's exactly what it is. :D

But thanks for clarifying your policy anyway.

Probably you can give more space to the traditional arts. Anytime I take a look into the Deviations I see mostly digital pieces.
Of course it is not a problem, if the submissions are made by that way.

I also wonder how many submissions do you reject time to time, and what is the reason of the rejection.

For example, I have submitted a deviation twice, but nothing happens so far. I am sure it is rejected, but I would like to know why...wrong folder, poor quality etc.

When we started this was a digital concept art group, having traditional pieces in as well made too many submissions to manage with our team, as much as we'd love to see them.
We don't have the man power, unless you're volunteering to help with the voting? ;)
I think this is something all the admins need to discuss together at the meeting, I'll add it in thanks for speaking up, it is a valid issue.
If you inbox us with your submission and request feedback we always get back to people as soon as we can.

Then we'll find a way to make this happen so you feel more comfortable. We could use an old system we considered where we had 3 tiers; beginner, intermediate and professional, whoever took part could choose their category themselves, so critique would be more personal, how does that sound? ;)

Hey it's good to see the contests back!
I might have some pointers:
- first of all, I agree that the public voting is not a good thing, it sucks, that needs to go away, it's not a proper way of selecting a winner
- second, I see a lot of artists participating that are at very different levels, so it would be pretty cool to have different sections, so that beginners could be criticized at their level, not at the level of the best participating artist. I'm not sure how the selection could be done though, maybe the judges should put each work in a specific category. I know that this might have ups and downs, because if there are 2 categories, for example, and an artwork is at a middle level, if placed in the lower levels, it will win, but if placed in the higher levels it will probably go last place.

Well it's an idea, but I'd really love to see more people participating, and maybe this will help it. I've read a lot of comments over the years from artists saying that they're not sure their level is high enough, they're not ready to post yet and so on. Maybe a beginner section will encourage that. Maybe an advanced section will encourage high level artists to participate, since competing against a beginner is not a great achievement for any experienced artist, let's be honest.

Hey Vlad long time no see :)
I like that idea man it gives all skill levels a chance to participate, if we let them decide which category they want to be in it'd be fair.

I think public voting on contest need goo away, It would more fair if you got couple judges. Also it would be nice if every participant get rewarded with some professional critique in private message, so he can move forward or simply work on their strengths.

And from community, help somehow artists become friends,  inspire and motivate artists could be neat goal.
