Your comic "Unguarded", where Frieza finds a little Saiyan friend, is really touching. It is one of the best DragoBall fan comics I have ever read!

Thank you for the watch, and for the kind words! It always makes my day to read comments like these. Thank you for reading and I hope you'll continue to enjoy the story. :)

I have two questions about the comic: what inspired you to show Frieza as a more sympathetic character? And is Ryuu going to survive? Anyway, thank you again for creating this comic. I hope that Akira Toriyama is going to see your comic as well!

I wrote the first draft back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I think one of the major influences was an abandoned fanfiction called "Heart of Ice." That story, along with some of the ideas proposed by the likes of Lady Frieza (the biggest fangirl I recall from that time), were probably the main catalysts.

At the time, no one was publishing a backstory for the character. "Heart of Ice" focused on a fabricated twin sister and Lady Frieza's works focused on an extended family post-Namek (this was well before Kuriza was a thing).

I was young and with the likes of angelfire and geocities being relatively new, I only shared the story with close friends. I'm glad I didn't post it online because the initial draft was sappy and outright heavy-handed with how Freeza's upbringing shaped him, a tendency common in some of the popular interpretations others have gone with in the last several years.

I wanted to do something a bit more nuanced: less 'Daddy fucked with his head' and more 'This kid had a chance to be decent but he was always pretty messed up and he ends up exactly where he wanted to be.' I can easily point to the character arc of Breaking Bad's Walter White as a direct influence to the current version of Unguarded.

Ryuu's fate is a spoiler. :D

It would be interesting but since Toriyama doesn't even reread his own story, I don't imagine he'd ever care to read some foreigner's deep dive about one of his villains. :D

Thank you very much for the in depth explanations! It is fascinating to hear an artist’s and writer’s point of view! I like the idea of a more relatable Frieza. I also greatly enjoy the relationship of Frieza and Ryuu, you nailed Frieza’s character perfectly! He comes off as both cocky and immature, but also as brutally calculating. Just the way he is in DBZ! Sorry for the bad English.

Could you send me your shout again? DeviantArt somehow deleted it and I have know idea why it disappeared. Anyway, thank you for everything! I am going to continue reading your stories and I am most excited about the events yet to come.

Thank you for the questions and for the kind words, as always!

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by "shout". :(

I beg your pardon, I was not precise enough. You have sent me a comment, which just disappeared into thin air. I have no idea what happened.

Got it, sent a paste of both to your messages. :)
