This design was actually a commission for www.configurationboxes.com/  - the simple brief was to take inspiration from Samurai. This box will be a physical replica available to buy. As for the numbers, as this is a puzzle box I like to incorporate into the design elements that could be in some way linked to its fictional opening method; so in my mind the method of opening involves primarily the solid scales on the 'tsuba' faces, a code in-putted via the numbers and the insertion of a blade.

And thank you for pointing the website out for me. It looks like it's still not fully functional yet, so I hope I'll be able to see more from them in the future. In the meantime, I think it's a great idea to have an "opening sequence" in mind when designing a puzzle box. The unorthodox placement of the numbers probably helps to hint at the owner how to open this puzzle. A great design!
