This is an interesting design. It's certainly got a lot of Japanese design element into it. I like the fact that the facing sides actually literally "face" each other (in the sense that the Samurai armour's has front and back of the head and the finger guards appear to accommodate a single blade passing through.) I am curious as to what inspired this design. I'm also curious as to why you decide to put the numbers on the "face" side as 1,3,2,4 as counted clockwise from the top right. Is there any significance to that?

This design was actually a commission for www.configurationboxes.com/  - the simple brief was to take inspiration from Samurai. This box will be a physical replica available to buy. As for the numbers, as this is a puzzle box I like to incorporate into the design elements that could be in some way linked to its fictional opening method; so in my mind the method of opening involves primarily the solid scales on the 'tsuba' faces, a code in-putted via the numbers and the insertion of a blade.

Thank you for the explanation! I really appreciate it.

And thank you for pointing the website out for me. It looks like it's still not fully functional yet, so I hope I'll be able to see more from them in the future. In the meantime, I think it's a great idea to have an "opening sequence" in mind when designing a puzzle box. The unorthodox placement of the numbers probably helps to hint at the owner how to open this puzzle. A great design!

Sorry for the late reply!
But thanks a million for letting me know. I don't have a Facebook account, though. So I guess I'll have to follow him on his website instead. I would love to see how the final box turned out! :)
