Bullshit! Why artists have to be woke all the time. Violating others' beleifs.

ScalerandiArt's avatar

I'm sorry if this painting came across as offensive to you. I wasn't trying to boast "wokeness" or whatever though, I just love the aesthetics and symbolism of traditional Indian art and I may have appropriated a bit too much of them here. It was one of my first actual paintings and I would be more careful nowadays. I have chosen to leave this one in my galleries though because it was not a mere fantasy/entertainment picture but an invitation to reflect upon topics of the highest importance for mankind, which was also the purpose of the type of art it references.

I can't stop staring at this picture. Also, the attention to detail, and the rational behind each icon, and your reasons for adding/changing them between the sketch, and the final, well . . . Yeah, I love this too much.

It also helps that my personal totem is the SnowLeopard.

But I think the most powerful thing of all IS that the iconography is a mix of the good and the bad, and the 'goddess' is neither happy nor sad about the situation, simply here in the present, and just watching how we mortal creatures are dealing with all that's happening. Maybe with a hint of amusement on how silly humans are, even if we tend to work things out in the end.

Wow, congrats on the DD :3 I saw it on the bottom bar and was like "that looks familiar..."
Looks great, of course!
ScalerandiArt's avatar
Thanks! It was quite unexpected, I though the image was way too cryptic to aspire to that. I'm happy to see that the style doesn't put off people either. I often wonder whether I'm using the old school furry style too blatantly, but that's how anthro characters are in my head, rounded and fluffy. :-)
ecmajor's avatar
There's nothing wrong with rounded fluffiness! I love your furry style.

By the way, is that a cell phone or iPod in one of the hands?
ScalerandiArt's avatar
A smartphone of unspecified brand. I think the photo I used for reference was actually of an Android phone but I don't remember.
WilderGothica's avatar
What was the purpose of it?
ScalerandiArt's avatar
All the symbolism is explained in the sketch notes:
[link]
The burning smartphone stands for the large consumption of rare earths and metals which are required to produce consumer electronics, they are "burned" at a very fast rate since the devices become obsolete after a very short time and often get thrown away.
WilderGothica's avatar
That's true, and rather sad. If they slowed down the new stuff next to come out would be a BIGGER improvement over the last, but there are some made from recycled materials.

A very good picture, but I especially like the title (Fourier was a brilliant mathematician - and Fourier Analysis is probably one of the more significant we looked at in applied maths last semester, if only briefly.) I admit that I didn't notice the Mandelbrot patterns when I first saw it, but I kicked myself for not spotting them after reading the description. Alas, most symbolism goes straight over my head, so I'm afraid that burning i-phone and suchlike doesn't really mean much to me.

Well done.

Kudos to you for explaining your symbols, wish more people did that.
By explaining how you use your symbols and why, I and other artists who are interested can get an idea on adding symbols to their own work, digital or traditional.

i don't know about the religion, but my friends found this offensive XD I do like the amount of details in this painting though.
ScalerandiArt's avatar
I'd be curious to know why they found it offensive if possible, it might be useful for future pictures. I realized beforehand that using styles clearly inspired by religious pictures is always risky, but she is a fictional character and not a reference to any actual Hindu deity. I didn't mean to mock the style or make a caricature either: I painted this because I respect a lot the Hindu icon style and the way it employs symbolism, and the ideas I've put in reworking the symbols are easily the ideas I'm most passionate about, I'd never use them as a tool to mock something.
ravenlael's avatar
i see, they probably find it offensive because of the pose really resemble to one of their Gods, because it's a sacred pose for them, but just probably... I will ask one of them (and link the sketch too) when they're online, or tomorrow when i'll meet one of them :)
ScalerandiArt's avatar
Thank you, that would be immensely helpful! If they have been offended please bring them my apologies for missing the fact that the pose itself is considered sacred. I avoided on purpose any writing such as Mantra symbols which could point to one specific deity, and I also avoided/modified any item which is associated with a specific deity (like the lance and the axe) but I didn't really consider the pose could be so.

The idea was to use symbols which are clearly associated with spirituality but to keep them non-specific. The best comparison I can think of is with the halo of Christian religious art: the halo has been associated with saints, with Jesus, with Mary, with angels, with common humans portrayed in the moment of redemption, etc., but taken on its own it is a "generic" symbol of spirituality which doesn't point to any one of them.

I might also add that to me all the topics I have touched in the picture are indeed sacred, since the future depends on whether the various human culture will adapt to deal with them. If this were meant to be an erotic or satirical picture I certainly wouldn't have posted it here.
ravenlael's avatar
i will send this message to them, i will remember your explanation as best as i can, since i'm sure we will be in a good mood because of the fieldtrip, they will listen~ :) and we're friends after all XD

This has been a long time coming! A pretty ambitious painting, and I think you handled it with great skill and consideration. There is so much to look at here I'm kept busy for several minutes just taking it in--then I noticed that her spots fade from blue to yellow with really nice effect. I'm happy the message of such a complex piece can be summarized in a single sound :D
Sharpfang's avatar
I recognized some of the symbols, missed most, LOLd at tetris ...the explanation of the rusted axe really got me to appreciate this.

Tell me yet about...
the green cloth on her back
the green and blue sparks on the CD
The chair is traditional, Roman, isn't it?
Does she have a name?
ScalerandiArt's avatar
- The green cloth doesn't have a specific meaning, though it may remember that today there is an odd fad for labeling stuff "green" - green cars, green homes, etc. I made it dark green because it was the only color from the palette I've used that looked right in that area of the picture. The smartphone flames are green for the same reason, if they were yellow/red/orange they would look too confusing against the golden frame. I have developed an odd way of choosing colors. X-D
- The sparks on the CD were copied from an actual CD under light, but I noticed that depending on the inclination you could have only the red-green-blue flares visible. RGB is one of the most common encoding of color for digital formats so it seemed ok.
- The chair is similar to Roman chairs though I haven't intentionally copied them, I just picked a simple shape which made sense. At first I wanted to make the seat look like a tree root but so near to the clothing folds it would have been too confusing. Probably it's also a separate piece from the seat's back since it is not symmetrical to its middle line. (The asymmetry is intentional, exact symmetry would make a frontal scene like this feel very unnatural. It's a trick used on the face of human 3D models too.)
- I actually wanted to name her "Purr". It's silly but I fear ponies have warped my sense of silliness beyond recovery. :-] Yet for some reason I don't feel that making up a more specific name would be appropriate, so I'll leave her nameless.

I also forgot to explain the title - it's a reference to Fourier's discovery of frequency analysis, which is the foundation of large areas of computing and scientific analysis and effectively ushered a new era in understanding of the physical world.
