If my computer wasn't so expensive I'd have demolished it by now. Not because of the hardware... no it's rarely hardware that's an issue. It's fucking software as usual!
I want to watch some of my DVD's but... low and behold Windows 7 and its stock media player doesn't have the appropriate codecs to do so... instead I get a black fucking screen with audio. If I Alt+F4 WMP... my screen remains black until I restart the PC, I have 4 monitors so... I've attempted to get the main one back but nothing can, even powering the screen off and back on doesn't do it.
So I've started ripping my DVD's (Oooo piracy... you know because apparently it's a legal grey area to manipulate the media I paid for!). Small issue... my ripper is retarded. Handbrake is great.... until you get null tracks or foreign audio scans. It seems to listen for the first language and then sets that for the whole film, subtitles for most films has to be always on or off and in some cases the DRM on some disks just makes it not worth doing, seriously some rips take longer than the films runtime.
VLC?... get real VLC is the linux of media players. Moan once about your OS and a neckbeard will be listing off alternative distros quicker than you can say "but does it support x". Same happens when you inevitably moan about WMP, someone will be suggesting VLC... but it sucks. For one it's hideous. I'm not a fan of some modern UI's and how simple they are but this... naaaaaah. Subtitle support seems to consist of external, on... or off... I cannot find anything for foreign only... because you know... I only need to know what the characters are saying when they speak anything other than English.
So I've now tried getting some codec packs for WMP regardless of the scare of malware because failing this... I'll be "downloading" the films I own since I can't fucking watch what I bought!!! Alas the codec packs have not worked as they too show as unsupported.
A pirates life for me it is then, maybe instead of companies putting invasive DRM measures into their media and software they could try making it work first so people like me don't end up having to "aquire" what they already own in a state that works.
...And no Netflix is not an option, until 1 platform has EVERYTHING on it with download options so I don't need 5 accounts across multiple platforms costing me half my salary just to be able to watch the things I want... then no.
I want to use WMP because it's subtitles actually work... it's just the codecs don't seem to...
If I don't post in a while I'll be in the Copy Protection Gulag with some corporate overlord whipping me for my heinous crimes against not giving them extra money to watch the media I own.
