Deeply and strongly considering starting a guide about starting a comic.

We hope to cover everything from deciding if you want to do a webcomic, or make this comic something people have to pay for, and showing a Pro/Con list to both sides, taking advice from experts in the field as well as members here.

We then want to focus on a bit on how to plan out a story. Not a whole step-by-step or "do, do not" thing, there are millions of those out there as it is, but more of a "how to keep it going" type of thing, and how to decide what should become a comic. So many members have dozens of ideas in their heads, and some would be great comics! Others would make better literature and some better games, it's all about deciding which is which.

Then we'll go on to if you need to find an artist, or another writer. If you have a large budget, your possibilities are much wider, so we'll primarily be focusing on those with a very limited budget.

Of course, we have to go over how to keep the team together and back-up plans should someone decide to abandon the project: You don't want to invest months, or even years to something, as well as advertisement and other expenses only to have to cancel the whole thing because a crucial team mate has left the project. (This is an area I have much experience with, oh yes...)

Then we'll go about ways to do scripting, be it text, visual, or a combination.

We'll go over finding a host, should the decishion be to make a webcomic.

We'll briefly go over how to make the website for the comic using basic HTML and/or hiring someone. If hiring someone, we'll focus a lot on how to update/maintain the website without having to pay more money.

Advertisement is the next step... Starting on when you should start advertising, to where there are opportunities.  Benefits of alliances, and doing art and link exchanges, how to start up a Guest Strip, etc.

Finally, it'll all lead up to the convention guide on helping people plan and attend conventions!

Sound good? Anyone want to help?

This guide will be amazing! Love the fact that it's written by non-pros is definitely inspiring in someway. Can't wait!

I don't know how to help but I'm happy to offer assistance (proof reading, layout editing?). Good luck!

Thank you!
A few if us writing the guide, specifically Sarah and I, are "pros" in that we have advanced experience in this, as we go to conventions, work with other artists, we host and sell out product... it's a lot of work! But we're not super famous yet, or working for Marvel-- it's all what we and our sponsors offer.

I am using advice from the pros, but only going so far as to use things I know for a fact work! We don't want to tell people the same thing every other place says, we want to give them information they can use NOW!

One reason I write these guides is because I'm still learning. Sometimes a member will tell me an advertising trick or something, or a site to advertise on that I'd never heard of before, and I want to spread that along.

I'll take your offer for help and will note you when I need it :)

Oh gosh! Sorry I didn't realise, my bad! XD

I'm really new to the indie comic scene but I've interest in it for a while, what's your work called? So that I can google it XD

I'm very much looking forward to seeing what your experience and wisdom have to offer in this scene and it sounds amazingly useful know of these tricks and trades experienced by others :dummy:

You're welcome! I'll be happy to help ^ ^

No worries!! My long standing comic is on Hiatus, and working with more artists for more XD We don't do this to promote our work, we do it to help others! ^_^

I've done conventions for yeeeaaaars... But I'm still not where I want to be! Everyone learns from one another! These guides are to help with that! I also learn from people noting me and saying "for your guide, I did this one thing, and it worked wonders. Maybe share?"

-shot for late reply due to being stupidly busy-

Besides drudging up a semi dead line of conversation, how's the guide coming along!? XD And my bad! I didn't know that you've attended cons for ages! I'm really looking forward to your guide now! I'm a bit apprehensive about my work - you know like 'would people even be interested in my OCs / work'? Do you struggle with self esteem issues? Any thoughts with how to tackle it? Thanks! :)

Just puttin it out there, there's a nice free site that hosts webcomics and you don't have to make your page look like it's "connected" to it and you don't have to have ads either! [link] You can even do your own layouts or use a premade. I've found it extremely helpful and I think others could too!

Well, we'll be talking mostly about original comics, but I'm not against fancomics, as long as they're not done for financial gain.

Oh, I understand! Like fanfiction.net, but for webcomics!

I'll look into it and see what I can find. I know Smackjeeves allows fancomics and will get you a real website.

Oh I tried Smackjeeves but for some reason my comic was deleted. It had over 90 comics. I may not had a lot of fans, because the Animorphs fandom is tight-knit, but I wanted to put out content.

Oh, animorphs, you say? I love animorphs! Not sure why they deleted it...

You could check if there has been a notice put out by schoolastic asking against fan content, but I have not heard of one.

Your other option is Freewebs.com

Ya, they're having a reprinting of the books right now and now there's a rumor of canceling it.

I got books #1-#7 and waiting for "The Alien".

They need to do more to bring the series back... the new actors they have for the covers... they don't look like the Animorphs we know and love, more could have been done for that.

I'd love to see your comic.
