X-Bomber (My Version) by Colourbrand X-Bomber (My Version) by Colourbrand
A convoy of Earth Defence Force transport ships traverse an asteroid field; escorting them are a number of astrofighters led by the EDF warship the X-Bomber. The supplies are vital; fighters are good against similar foes – larger predators need a big brute of a defender – and the X-Bomber is that.

--------

This is my version of the famed warship X-Bomber; for those unfamiliar with this vessel (and there are a few in that bracket), it is the ship from the Japanese show “Super Space Machine X-Bomber” – better known as Star Fleet in the west.

The story is set around a crew whose initial mission is to thwart an alien invasion by the Imperial Alliance; however, the heroes learn that the aliens are after something called the X01 and as a result head off into the unknown, into adventure to uncover this mystery.

Think Star Trek + Star Wars + Getter Robo.

This show was famous for two things – first it was the only major puppet action show that was NOT done by Gerry Anderson; it was done by legend Go Nagai.

The second was the narrative of the story; unlike Anderson’s shows, Star Fleet had a single story arc with an ending; it was also full of very mature elements that western shows would not follow; death, heroism, sacrifice, loss, betrayal, vengeance, and the characters were flawed. The heroes maybe this on paper but they were as fragile and as imperfect as us; they may have had awesome machines to fight with, but none possessed any remarkable abilities except their skills.

Puritans may be offended by this simple synopsis – all I say is look up Star Fleet, watch it and come to your own conclusions.

As for the titular machine, I love the vessel but it had a number of flaws and design traits I did not like; the engine arrangement, the swan-neck to reveal its weapons, and some weapons that appear to fire out of nowhere. The X-Bomber could take punishment that would put the Galactia to shame and it was absurd in many ways.

That said, I love the show, love the design, and love the effort that went into it; the ship is a design masterpiece – up there with the Odyssey, the Liberator, the Enterprise, and the Discovery just to name a few. It is a very clever piece of design despite a few things I do not like – so I went for making it more robust looking, having emitters for weapons, changing the nose into a battery of arms instead of it being the bridge with rip-off manned gun turrets akin to the Millennium Falcon. As for its super weapons, I mounted most into an armoured hatch that would sprout open. The nose is fixed and unlike the original, I made her more warship-like and does not carry the supermech Dai-X.

The other ships are mods on Go Nagai’s designs which are also smart and very innovative.

Like to hear your thoughts :D

Enjoy!

Looks like a blown up X-Wing after some meanie stepped on it´s nose.
Yet i kind of like it.
Must be my fascination for ugly ships...

I think I did it a bit of an injustice - look up the real vessel - she is an awesome machine :D

Your version appears to have a flatter nose/bow area, but otherwise it came out great.
And can hold up to the original, you have nothing to hide here.

I don't know where you find these works- shows like these are completely obscure to me- but I must say I've had my interest piqued! The simple synopsis you've provided sheds some light on what sounds to me like a
fascinating and unique TV show, what with the themes listed, the puppet action, and the story; but that ship is something else. I took a look at the original design on the internet, and I must agree with you that that
swan-like neck at the tip looks, in a word, unfitting with the overall more angular design. Nevertheless, it really should be given more merit and more attention- I love the ingenuity! :)

The changes you made to the X-Bomber in your adaptation are, to me, a more realistic incarnation of it with regards to its flaws mentioned- it does look more robust, especially around the middle and neck, and the
thrusters don't look like they're going to snap off! A particular mention to me is in the wings- I thought the wings on the original were very small, and distracted from the image- and I love how you remedied that situation. :D

As for the image itself, this is a beautiful piece of work! Your placement of each ship is excellent, and the detail on even the smallest one in the distance is insane! Much respect from me here, sir- I never would have had that
much patience! Truly a winner, my friend.

On a final note, I love the selections of design masterpieces you've got there; Kubrick's Discovery is my absolute favourite!

This was from my childhooe, back in the day when bold ideas were put forward before profit.

I suggest you to look it up; It is akin to Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Gate in writing terms; just because its puppets does not mean it should be overlooked or snubbed; it is a great story, in fact a lot better than most that are written today. You will root for the good guys, despise the baddies and cheer when needed.

At the time this was rather unique but since reading anime and manga, many of the ideas I have seen look akin to other things in japanese lore; however, don't let this put you off; please watch it - you won't regret it.

As for the neck, there is that - it is rather innovative, but from a tactical point, its a glaring weakness.

Now I am very surprised about the wings - I never ever thought of that; I just followed what I thought was close; wow! Thanks for mentioning it!

As for the ships - well I had to give it a go - fleet pics here seem to be a winner, so I am trying to do more of them :D

So...the Discovery's your favourite eh? Hmmm....;)

Cheers for for such a great and fantastic response :D!!

Sounds like a classic work of science fiction goodness to me. I love those old childhood kinds of things- they have the imagination that appeals to a child's mind, yet the innovation and creativity that adults find more attractive- I must
find it somewhere! And heck- puppetry is nothing to scoff at- look at the success of The Muppets and Little Shop of Horrors!

Your words always carry so much honesty- I shan't be sidetracked by trivial things. :)

It was a good thing- I couldn't let it go by unnoticed :D

Without a doubt- both the book and the movie of Space Odyssey are my favourite pieces of science fiction! Kubrick was a directing genius- I haven't dared to see 2010 yet.

Cheers, sir- the pleasure is mine!

Well. I don't know whether to praise your creative vision or head south with Jurall Dared and walk into your front room all guns blazing..... :D (Big Grin)

There's things here I like and others, not so much. I do like the new upper engine configuration and the sloping on the Leg Trax/Main Body bays. Also the trapezoid shape of the obs area is nice makes the ship look far more menacing and the addition of emitters for the X-Cannon is a welcome improvement.

However....  How can you do away with the swan neck, that was one of the coolest things about the XB! :( (Sad)

Also disregarding the Dai-X is UNFORGIVABLE!!  Don't forget, the X-Project was the X-Bomber and Dai-X. Bad Chris! =P (Razz)

It darn well better still have the X-Impulse!! :) (Smile) youtu.be/KW4fHWZED90?t=50s

As for the EDF fighters, they look the business and more than capable of matching the Alliance's Astrofighters, unlike the originals, LOL.

Your take on the Transports look good too, almost identical to the originals. I'm guessing you went with a retractable undercarriage as I can't see any here. Also I note you prescribe to my train of though of them carrying three cargo pods rather than one. Makes sense to me, though we can't know for sure as it's never shown in the show what the exact system was.

Seriously though this is good work, an X-Bomber for a 21st century audience, despite the lack of the Dai-X (no you don't get away with that one LOL). Great work my friend and another +fav  for you.

The question remains however... Dare he risk my wrath with a version of the GSX-1? :D

Ooh. Ah.:O

Right.

Well this is good practise and I appreciate the feedback and praise you for not just being honest but passionate. One thing I cannot stand is that “it’s alright” bollocks.

Another is vitriol.

Reading this made me actually feel bad but I understand.

Well to begin.

When I designed this version, I wanted it to feel like a workable ship; as you have pointed out, the engine arrangement and the housings looked rather poor, I wanted this ship to feel like a serious piece of kit (and for the record, I still think X-Bomber is the Best Human warship ever! It is a measurement to me when comparing other Human “superships”!) a kicker, a killer, a force IN its OWN right.

The emitters I felt were needed for the X-Cannon (I think was the second coolest weapon it had next to you know what ;)), but I wanted to make it multi-diverse; think the roll bar phasers of the Reliant, with the flexibility of an X-Wing.

I never liked the Swan neck – sorry I did not; I thought it was a begging vulnerability, akin to the stupid open hanger bays on the original BattleStar Galactica. No wonder the F***ing Atlanta was blown to atoms. In the (best and finest) episode of Star Fleet, the weakness is apparent when the crew use the dual lasers there to try and breach Makara’s Warship’s shield – which she promptly destroys; it was luck that the blast did not sever the ship!

However, reading the innovative Star Fleet website (you know the one!) there were theories that the X-Bomber was humanity’s first warship. A point further made fact that almost all of EDF’s fleet consists of shuttles and fighters (more on that later!); sound reasoning.

The swan neck could be excused as a concept, but I never liked it – even as a kid. In addition to it, I felt that they were pointless armaments – the best was again X-Cannon; four beams converge into one? That I thought was not just clever, but also a far better standard heavy weapon before the last resort!

On the subject of X-Impulse – trust me, I have no reason to leave that out. It’s a last resort weapon, but the beam fires through the structure of the ship? My idea would be like something akin and ironic to an X-Ray gun – the hatch at the front would open and a large emitter would release a blast. Think something akin to the game R-Type with its powerblaster. It makes more sense – of course the emitter would be a target hence the defensive batteries; but luck and fate…

I took into account the other weapons X-Bomber had; the head at the front, a cluster of guided emitters; hatches for medium weapons on the top – seen in the episode where X-Bomber blew up three Imperial carriers in that asteroid field.

In short this ship has great and clever armaments and ideas; just wanted to make her more “resilient” looking.

Dai-X; that I admit, I misjudged. Trust me, I adore Dai-X and no other mech I have ever seen comes close – be it GUNDAM anything to Robot Jox, from the Atlas (which is a pussy to be honest compared to the crimson giant) to the HIDEOUS EVIL of Pacific Rimming. To me Dai-X IS the badass of mechs; look what it could do – smash forts, take on entire armies, crush tanks, absorb fire, and smash other mecha! And lets not forget Dai-X’s greatest moment – and we know what that is ;)

I just wanted this pic to be about X-B.

As for the other ships, I based them on all of Go-Nagai’s designs but with more to them. The Freighters I am very proud of; minimal but enough – and I thought they were excellent designs. I think it was your work that inspired these, my friend; and plaudits to Nagai-San for his clever minimal genius!

Finally – the GSX-1? Pfff I dunno to be honest; part of me regards her as flawless – just a brush up with modern CGI for crisper detail is enough, but part of me wants to make her the Airwolf of the Stars. Would make her sleeker, speedier – and trust me Death Blossom would be with her, it’s an innovation.

It’s a thought but not one on the top of my list.

Thanks for the feedback sir, I was waiting to see your thoughts and good on you to stand by your principles; it shows importance – and I respect true importance.

:)
