Battletech: Silver and Gold - Chapter 6
Morning greeted the day shift and this time Hermes got up at an earlier time, to see the sun rise on Landaker.
All there was, was the day getting brighter and then the fuzzy sphere of Beta Halsami, rising into the sky. Despite it being daylight, the brightness felt like a form of twilight.
After the reports and their breakfast, came battlemech patrol duty. This time, it was Hermes' turn to venture out into the wilderness, along with seven other officers, known in ComStar's ranking as either adepts or acolytes.
Anyone who rode and operated a battlemech, was known as a mechwarrior; anyone who operated such a machine that is not designed for combat, got no credit of the sort.
Mechwarriors, were a strange but egotistical breed of human; when they piloted or owned such a machine, many were smug, self-centred and cock-sure. When any lost their machines and could not get a replacement, they were classed as the 'Dispossessed', a derogatory term that went something along the lines of being a va

Battletech: Silver and Gold - Chapter 5
Once again, the routine of his morning ritual was played out, with no alteration.
As before, he made it to the control room, said his welcomes to the night shift, asked for a report from Rose and proceeded to get his horrid coffee. He hoped that this time, the supplies brought in better stuff.
Hermes prepared himself a cup from the machine and to his surprise, it tasted a lot better.
Rose noticed his reaction.
"Tastes like coffee!" Hermes smirked as he looked at his friend, "either they got in some proper stuff or something else has improved."
"You mean, like the filters?"
Hermes pulled a face; the thought that all this time, that the taste was down to that simple error, made him wince.
Rose chirped at his reaction.
"It's okay, Skip; I got in some better coffee, from a friend of a friend. And sides, I checked the filters long ago; just took time to get in some good stuff."
"Why didn't you say something?"
"Wanted to surprise you."
Hermes smirked; he and Rose went back years and

Battletech: Silver and Gold - Chapter 4
It was the end of the month and as routines go, it was the one, all of the base personnel looked forward to.
The last couple of days of each month, a dropship was sent to deliver water, supplies and anything else needed for that base.
This was the time the base became most active; all the personnel chipped in, everyone got cleaned up, dressed smart and looked like nothing had wore them down.
With the arrival of such a vessel, the Command Centre became an active hive and the personnel helped guide and monitor the incoming vessel. The base personnel, then awaited for the ship to land.
The dropship would appear at first, as a speck in the sky and then its shape grew into a recognizable vehicle. The moment the ship was coming in for touchdown, its landing struts splayed out of its spherical hull and then the engines fired, in a bid to control its decent.
When this happened, the windows vibrated as the dropship's drives roared. Once the dropship landed, the engines died and dock duty began.

Battletech: Silver and Gold - Chapter 3
Again, the routine of life on Landaker's base played out on repeat, with no change in rhythm. However, it was week end and the base personnel could have a proper, hot shower.
When the water touched his skin, Hermes felt human again. Athough it was brief, it was refreshing and the man gasped in welcoming joy.
After that, he face-shaved, washed and dried his short but wavy hair, he then got dressed and left his room.
That routine was a morale booster.
Despite the advances of water purification, Landaker had no means to create it - the planet was as dry as dust. Water had to be shipped in and sewage extracted, hence its premium nature. To use water for anything else, needed a code and everyone had a quota. That said, no one ever exploited their share.
As routine, Hermes held a meeting with his staff every week, to see how things were. In turn, they would then report on the consistent state of 'nothing extra-ordinary' happening.
Hermes' staff consisted of Rose 'Rosie' Waters, his second in

Battletech: Silver and Gold - Chapter 2
Once again, another day on Landaker came to pass and Hermes was woken again, by his cheap alarm clock and as before, the routine of wincing, groaning, stumbling in the dark, getting blinded by the icy blue light, cleaning himself, getting dressed and then leaving his room, played out.
As he has done so, for the past two years, Hermes entered the Command Centre, went for his acrid coffee, looked outside at the barren landscape and stood dejected.
Like with his other routines, Hermes would then go to his office, take his seat, activate his computer, opened the software up with his security codes, scan the files and any other information that required his attention and most times, nothing extraordinary occurred.
Aside of the end-of-month deliveries, which was the highlight of the entire base's routine (because it was a sign that human society, had not abandoned them), nothing else happened.
The rare occasion of something unusual occurring on Landaker, was greeted with almost shock and joy
