With the many talks of Kingdom Hearts 3 and its floaty combat, I’ve noticed there is an large band of people, primarily being casual players that only care about the story that choose to remain extremely ignorant about the gameplay aspects of video games. One example being a video made by Bl00dyBiscuits, a Kingdom Hearts speedrunner who decided to make a video called “The Consequences Of Floaty Combat In Kingdom Hearts.” In this video he clipped a conversation thread where a player called him out on taking the game too seriously as though it was a fighting game. Of course the logic does not make sense. How can you think of a single player experience as a fighting game? Because you chose to look at the intricacies such as frame data? But that is something speedrunners do in general. When things can be broken down into frames, they will do so, even being able to calculate various pathing as frame perfect to be able to execute specific things, whether it is entirely correct or not. In “Is 4:55 the perfect speedrun? Super Mario Bros. World Record Explained,” the video scientifically broke down how in specific spots of each players’ run, they had specific moments where they had two to four frame gaps when making jumps in order to perform a specific technique, and how missing one frame could cost them milliseconds of time that could easily add up. And this is a platformer where no actual combat really exists unless you want to be a butt about it and talk about Mario’s various abilities to attack enemies and the bosses.
One thing that irks me about this is how those of the story side tends to undermine the value of an overall well rounded product. Just because they have their story, they can tolerate any gameplay element so long as it isn’t too frustrating. But for the players that care for the nuance in gameplay, which in this game ends up being a vast number of beloved Kingdom Hearts II players, they have to eat crap for the developer’s garbage gameplay decisions and are seen as nitpicky and selfish for wanting a more nuanced experience in the gameplay department. Why is it so hard for this side to understand when I know people from the gameplay side that would hardly slam down those that are interested in the story, especially when Kingdom Hearts has the most contrived, plot hole driven mess with some of the dumbest, not so well-rounded characters I have seen in a JRPG outside of Final Fantasy XIII (a trilogy I actually love for its gameplay like Kingdom Hearts I and II actually). It’s fairly frustrating to be honest. One side gets their cake and eat it too while the other is left with a dung pie. I have had conversations with numerous people about the aspects of gameplay as well but when you argue their ideas it simply goes to “Well this game I play for the story so who cares about the gameplay aspects.” So people are willing to stay ignorant to the opposite viewpoint without ever having a grasp understanding on what compels people to talk about it. So this debate is always stuck to lower level thinking… but fighting games are allowed to have higher thinking I guess. Just mess me up fam.
