Empire Handgunner 1

Description

In an effort to get some more model work done, I finally decided to go and do some models that have been long overdue for completion.

The first on the agenda is my Empire Army handgunner detachment. If you're a fan of Warhammer fantasy, and of the Empire, you may notice something right away with these next models. Namely the model quality. These guys are fairly old, and are all one or two piece castings. (This should give some idea how long I've been at this if you know your time frames. ^^;)

As far as I know these particular guys are no longer made, and have been replaced by the better quality multi-part kits currently being used by Games Workshop. So, I intend to try and challenge myself and get as much out of them as I can.

I'm also using a brand new, better quality camera. Hopefully, with a little time and practice, this should make for better pictures for you guys. :)

Wow. This is so well painted and so professionally presented that if you had told me that this was a picture they were going to put in the new Empire Army Book, I wouldn't doubt it for a second. They say that the two most important parts of painting a model are faces and bases, and you've done both wonderfully. The grey hair and weathered skin really works well with the slightly nervous facial expression. The level of detail from the pupils to the pouches to the string on the Handgun is overwhelming for a core unit model. If I absolutely had to point out a flaw in this model, it's that he looks too clean for his base: I can't help but think that adding some dirt stains to his crisp white socks and some powder burns to his sleeves might give him a more "battle-worn" feel.
Final Thoughts:
Vision: Four out of Five. You wanted to paint a Handgunner in a Nornland uniform, and you followed through well.
Originality: One out of Five. This may seem a bit unfair, but the fact is that this model is taken directly from the kit, and painted in a color scheme already laid out by Games Workshop.
Technique: Five out of Five. I would sell my soul to be able to paint like this. The details in this paint job are incredible. You even painted the pupils on the eyes and the gleaming silver straps on the gunpowder pouches. It's little things like that which separate the good painters from the great ones, and you are one of the great ones.
Impact: Five out of Five. The limited palette is used to maximum effect on this humble handgunner. The crisp contrasting yellow and blue are perfectly accentuated by the muted brown and grey of the rifle and pouches, which in turn emphasize the cleanness of the skin and socks.
Overall: Four-and-a-half out of Five. This looks like it was made by a professional. This looks like something you would see in the Army Book.
