I meant to write this last night, but I got home late, so here it is.
Last week was amazing. I was unable to go home for spring break due to work, so I had to stay on campus. This college campus is home to over 20,000 students and last week there were maybe 100 still hanging around. I was able to go to the lakes and take photos without worrying about people walking by all day and scaring away the birds and things.
Monday I went to the lake in the middle of campus where all the ducks and geese hang out. It was fun but there were some students there throwing food at the birds and trying to get pictures with their cell phones. But after they left I was all alone.
On Wednesday I captured a photo which I am going to consider the best one I have ever taken to date. I was actually leaving from taking pictures of flowers and trees when I saw something move in the corner of my eye. There was this mocking bird, having lunch in a tree , and I was able to sneak up and get a good close up before he flew away.
On Thursday, I got off work, and was going to go home and eat. Well the sun was about an hour from setting and as I walked I noticed birds everywhere. I wanted to go home and get my camera, but then again I was tired from working ALL day and just wanted to go home. I eventually talked myself into getting my camera, which was the best decision ever. First I got this guy
Then I walked to one of the lakes and noticed a red-winged black bird (my new favorite bird) up high in a tree. I climbed a brick wall and stood there under the tree waiting for him to open his wings.
and he did
Then to make the experience even better I turned around and realized the sun was setting behind me and the reflection on the water was beautiful.
I almost cried. The smell in the air of the water and the cool breeze reminded me of my childhood, going fishing with my dad every summer and spending those nights on the lake. Even now as I write this the feeling are coming back. See, my dad is a homeless alcoholic now and those moments I remember from childhood remind me of how things used to be. So as I sat by that lake and watched the sun set and listened to the red-winged black bird chirping behind me, the only word that came to mind was ecstasy
The weekend was even better. I went back home and spent some awesome time with my family. Friday night I had dinner with my older sister and her family, and then Saturday went on a nature walk and had a blast.
I took that as the sun rose that morning. That evening I went to a wedding of a good friend and had a great time. Then my youngest sister and I went to Hobby Lobby to buy materials to make us some new dresses and we laughed so much. It was a great feeling. Then we went to my oldest sister's and pushed her 3 kids in a swing in the dark.
So many amazing feelings of nostalgia and joy. Finished the weekend by sitting on the porch drinking coffee with my mom one last time before i traveled back the 5 hours to my new home.
Well this is the longest journal I have written on here, but I just felt like I wanted to share how amazing my week was. Thanks for those who actually read this. I am honored to be able to share a piece of me with someone.
