Ultimate Guide to Fantasian Mers

Ranking:

This list will show the different ranks in mer society.

We'll start from the lowest to the highest ranking.

Pup/Whelp: A baby mer from the ages of birth to 5 years.

Juvenile: A young mer from the ages of 6 to 12.

Adolescent: A young mer ranging from the ages of 13 to 17.

Adult: A mer who is 18 and up.

Maid: A young female mer.

Tom/Tod/Drake: A young male. (NOTE: Males are usually just called males. They are rarely called these names.)

Lone Female: A female with no pod.

Lone Male: A male with no pod.

Rogue Female: A female who has been forced out of her pod for some reason.

Rogue Male: A male who has been forced out of his pod for some reason.

Queen: A female with a mate and/or who has birthed whelps.

Sire: A male with a mate and/or who has fathered whelps.

Matron: An elder female charged with babysitting the young and passing on wisdom.

Elder: An old mer beyond the age of 60.

Monarch: An alpha mer in the pod with high ranking. The monarchs make the major decision making in the pod, like where to move everyone and when. Monarchs gain the rank by being the most powerful fighters or the wisest in the pod. Whilst they act normal and operate like normal mers within the pod, other mers are careful to avoid picking a fight with them.
This should help you get to know fantasian mers a bit better.

How many monarchs are typically present in a healthy-sized pod or is their only one monarch per pod? Are there any benefits that come with being monarch apart from the stress of being at the top and in charge of others? If being monarch is a result of being the most powerful fighter or the wisest, are there contests for monarchy? If so, how are they conducted and how often? If a monarch is overthrown, do they still stay within the pod, but at a lower rank like macaques? How are disputes among pod members typically settled? Do they have any rituals they conduct to ease tension among the pod and diminish the need for fighting? When foraging and food availability is poor, do pod members have a system in place for sharing food resources? And do they have a system in place to discourage those that would inevitably try to cheat the system and not take part in any hunting?

Gah! I keep picking through the social structures of lions and primates in particular, but also wolves and elephants when I think of your mers and then more questions pop up!

(Typing on a tablet so forgive typos... lol)

Pods generally have between 1 to 5 monarchs. Monarchs basically are just normll mers that have shown leadership skills, intellegence and figbting prowess. If a mer wishes to become a monarch, they must challenge an existing monarchi of the same gender. Loser can remain in the pod. These fights dont happen terribly often if its a peaceful pod. If a monarch is defeated, then they simplyreturn to their lives as a nornal mer. The only real difference between a mer and a monarch is the fact thtt monarchs are like the big siblings to everyone. While thebbpod makes desicions as a whole, the monarchs act as the final say and usually make the tougher choices. Besides that, its mostly just a rank, like being an expert at something, it doesnt make you a king or BETTER, just means your more respectedx and your word holds more weight. Same with minarchs.

No real rotuals to stop fighting, they usually just stop it by stepping, but thats only if its seroous. Fighting and spartings is a part of pod life.

Yes mers do have a food system. Usually thosebbwho are bble to hunt hunt for them and their families and friends. When times are tough, all bble bodied mers hunt fornthe weaker ones, like pups, elders and mothers. Less as a law and. more because they care. Pod sricks together man, a good pod is like an extended family.

Hard to cheat for food in a mer pod. If something like this did happen for some reason, the mer mught get a good swipe in the cheek for it. Food usually is caught them immidiately either eaten or given to someone to eat.
