FANTASIAN MERS: GROUPING

All mer breeds can be separated into five basic groups.
They are as follows...

Pandora

Leera

Royal (sometimes called "Phara")

Midian

and Zephree.

Each group can be identified by different means depending on which one it is.
Here we will give you some pointers on which mers belong to which group.
_____________________________

Pandora:

Mers in the Pandora group are very decorative in coloration and fin shape and are seen as very aesthetic and exotic. Mers in this group are usually fairly docile and shy but are know for their mild curiosity and pod oriented behavior. They usually live near the shore in coral reefs and shallow, clear waters. Body wise, most Pandoras have decorative fins with only one spine and a billowing sail like shape to them, they have bright colors and usually prefer warmer climates. They are ambush predators and prefer to hunt in groups if they must. They have good stamina but are not the strongest or fastest.

Some examples of Pandora Group mers are as follows...

Common Pandora

Pearl Pandora (sometimes called "Ghost Pandora")

Akoia

and Glass scales (used to be called Glass Backs)

Leera:

Leera are a common group for mers to fall into. They are like the tabby cats of the mer world since they are common and easily identifiable due to their distinct pattern. All mers in the Leera Group have distinctive stripes or spots, usually resembling a tiger's stripes or a leopard's spots. Their temperament is commonly described as calm, wary and confident. Body wise, Leera are evenly balanced between stamina and speed, but they are well known for their strength. They are chase hunters and usually hunt in groups.

Some examples of Leera Group mers are as follows...

Emerald Leera

Jade Leera

Crimson Leera

Northern Tiger Back

Southern Tiger Back

Stone Leera

and Leopard Back
_____________________________________________

Royal:

Royal Group mers, (also known as "Phara Group") are well known for their bold, bright, and rich colors. They can easily be identified by these colors and their sharp, spiny fins. Their temperament has been described as being bold, aggressive, loyal and curious. Royals are strong and have lots of stamina and while they are fast, they are know for their speed. They are ambush predators and can hunt alone or in a group.

Some examples of Royal Group mers are as follows...

Ebony Royal

Fire Back

Royal Blue

Northern Blue

and New Zealand Teal
_____________________________________________

Midian:

Mers in the Midian Group look similar to Royals, but there are a few key differences between them. Midian mers generally are smaller and rely on speed and ambush, they have high stamina and speed but are not known for their strength like Leera or Royal. While they do have many spines on their fins, they are not sharp and jagged, but instead look rounder like fans. Midian group mers also have many colors in their group, but they are not quite as bold as others. They are also the most common type of mer. Their temperament has been described as mild mannered, shy, docile, peaceful and pod oriented.

Some examples of Midian Group mers are as follows...

Gold Midian

Arctic White

Mariana Black

Stone Backs

and Copper Midian
_______________________________________________

Zephree:

Zephree are known for their speed and slim, sporty bodies. They usually have a pale coloration but are not limited to it. All Zephree have a stripe down the length of their tails, whilst many breed possess this Zephree MUST have it. As stated before they are slim with arrow shaped tails and long sharp fins. They are ambush predators and chase hunters with extreme stamina and speed but not a lot of strength. They are known for jumping clear out of the water and catching low flying birds.

Some examples of Zephree Group mers are as follows...

Common Zephree

Silver Zephree

Rose Zephree

and Indigo Zephree

Hello! I have some questions on Arctic White:
As their breed name says they live in Artic climates or in both climates(Artic and Hot climates)? How many they are? Also where do they live?

Hi! Im so glad your interested. :)
Well, I actually cant give a good answer right now since the mers are going under a huge reconstruction. Arctic whites may no longer be a thing soon. They may be replaced with other types like the Titanium White among others.

Im sorry i couldnt be of more help.

More common colors throughout the types are various shades of gold, green, orange, brown, copper, and dark. I'm working on a full list but it'll take a little while.

I notice you specifically refer to these different groups of mers as breeds and not species. I assume that means they can interbreed without issue, but how does that affect the phenotypes of the offspring? I would assume that genes that code for Leera or Midian body types are more dominant genes (or at least more successful and therefore more prominent) based upon how common they are, but would it be possible for a Royal and a Midian to have, say, a Zephree whelp if there was some Zephree somewhere in their family lines?

Your more or less correct. Usually the welps take after one parent or another, though the color term may be dofferent.

Example: An Ebony Royal (royal type) and a Gold Midian (midian type) have offspring together. The child can be an Ebony Royal, a Gold Midian, (like the parents) or it could make an Emperor Gold (Royal)
Or a Deep Midian (Midian. Their also known as Mariana Blacks.)

As for grandparents sneaking in zephree genes like your example, the welp would have to have a zephree grandparent on BOTH sides for it even to be MILDLY possoble, but even then its extremely rare.

Questions (probably a dumb question but I'll ask anyways XD) Can the Mers ever have different body types?
For examples, be half octopus, or orca, or just something unique??

For Fantasian mers? No. They can only have the body type presented. However, there IS a different species all together that had an octopus half. I'm currently working on those as well as an eel like ancient ancestor to the fantasian mer that lives at much deeper depths called proto mers.
