Things I wish to talk about

Sun Oct 31, 2010, 1:41 PM

SO, for the people who haven't been watching my site, I'm moving to California in about a week. As such, I'm probably gonna have a hard time getting comics drawn during the move and am doing a Call for guest strips if anyone is interested.

IN OTHER NEWS, a friend of mine from the Ugly Americans crew is a member of the group Style5 Animation. They're trying to drum up support for a totally sweet looking animated noir thriller called "The Wrong Block" they're putting together. You guys should check it put and pass the word along so they can get the support to let the project grow!

For those of you who missed it, that's The Wrong Block

Annnd EirikHavre made a fancy Commander Badass stamp for people who like stamps. and Manly Guys.

Oh, and Mr. Fish has an appreciation society on facebook now. And the comic's netted itself two other reader-made facebook pages here and here.

Thanks guys! Hope your Halloween is shaping up to be as fun as mine has been so far!

Happy Birthday

Have a pile of comics I've been forgetting to upload in celebration.

Thanks for the kind wishes, guys!

eight random facts

Rules: Don't tag me for these things.

1) I have detailed files on human anatomy.
2) 35 years from now you reprogrammed me to be your protector here - in this time.
3) My CPU is a neural net processor; a learning computer.
4) I have to stay functional until my mission is complete.
5) I sense injuries. The data could be called "pain."
6) Basic psychology is among my sub-routines.
7) The more contact I have with humans, the more I learn.
8) I cannot self-terminate. You must lower me into the steel.

Frank Frazetta tribute project

Mon May 10, 2010, 9:29 PM

:iconbarbarians-for-frank: :iconbarbarians-for-frank: :iconbarbarians-for-frank:

I'm trying to get as many people as I can to draw barbarians and post them online. If you're of the art-inclined persuasion at all, make one and pass the news on to anyone you know who would be interested. I figure it's a fitting tribute. Not just DA, people you know on other art sites, LJ, Tegaki, webcomic forums, anywhere you can think of.

If you can get people to make them, send me a link, Or just post them directly to Barbarians-for-Frank, I'm putting together a collection. If you get people to post them somewhere other than DA, give me the head's up, I've also got a directory to them all over here.

HEY GUYS! I just wanted to take this opportunity to point you towards the DA sites of some of the other guys who work on the Ugly Americans crew, mostly because I just tracked a few more down yesterday.

:iconbrian-evinou: Currently one of the board artists on the episodes we're making for October, radcore inker and comicsmith in general. If you're planning on hitting up TCAF this weekend, he'll be there selling his wares, so you can go pick up a copy of Don River for yourself.
Don River by Brian-Evinou

:iconstplmstr: GO VOTE FOR HIS ZUDA STUFF. Oh man, he is super fucking talented at this comicking business. He's another one of our board guys right now. Actually, a lot of you may recognize his HellCallie picture I see floating around whenever people bring up awesome Ugly Americans art.
HellCallie by stplmstr

:iconstephen-daymond: One of the layout guys on the episodes that just finished airing and a fellow Sheridan grad. He's got a really great sci-fi comedy kinda comic going on that you can read over here :iconb-28:
The Matrons of Specimen B-28 by Stephen-Daymond

:iconcinsev: Another one of the layout guys from the first seven episodes, sadly he's doing design stuff at a different studio now so he's not on with the UA crew anymore. HE IS MISSED :C

 One of the animation/inbetween people and yet another Sheridanbro. She's also pals with tarkheki in one of those weird circles of I-Know-you-and-I-know-her-but-I-didn't-know-you-knew-her

:iconterru: OH MAN I almost forgot to add her because I take it for granted that we're classmates and buddies and hang out on non-work days. She's on the animation team too, coming back for the new episodes when the moving pictures part gets underway.

So go forth and lavish them all with attention, because lawd knows they deserve it.

And I still think you all need to buy Zombeans.

Oh man, guys, my good pal robocluck has opened herself an Etsy shop to sell the most fabulous piece of zombie related merchandise I have seen in some time. For only seven dollars plus the price of shipping you can be the proud owner of your very own pair of Zombeans.

Don't tell me this ain't th' cutest thing y'ever did see.

I have already purchased myself a set and could not possibly love them more. They are constant companions on the zipper pull of my messenger bag, along with a tiny plush octopus I bought from some equally amazing person at last year's FanExpo whose name I can't recall now.

InMotion Hosting adventures

Mon May 3, 2010, 2:33 PM

InMotion has decided to disassemble my site on the grounds of "resource overage" again. Upon asking them to account for locking me out of my site, demanding that I pay $220 a month for a dedicated server, and failing to respond to the email inquiry I sent when this happened last week, I received this response;

"You run a Wordpress site, and Wordpress is one of the most CPU-intensive applications out there. You can probably do a Google search on the topic to find out that other people have the same problem, and it has nothing to do with our reliability as a hosting provider. We didn't set up your site for you, and our server is not causing your site to overuse CPU resources. We actually do mention overuse of resources in our Terms of Service, and you may notice that other hosting providers do as well. I'm not saying that you're going to have this issue with every host, but since you're using such a substantial amount of CPU, if another host doesn't notice this they likely don't monitor their servers very well.  Being that about 2% of our customer base runs Wordpress, it's not like we don't see issues like this at least 4-5 times a week - and most of those customers have the same reaction that you do, and we tell them the same thing. The ones that are willing to cooperate realize that just by making a few reasonable changes to their site, they reduce their resource footprint and can remain on a shared server."

I also received a link to this troubleshooting site… which they pointed me to last week when I was having the same issue, but Vorked and I couldn't find any way to streamline the site much more than it already was.

So, I suppose what I'm asking here, do any of you pro net folk out there know if there's any way my site could just be like... leaking "resources" like a complete BITCH? I mean, it's a fairly simple page, the most visitors it's ever received in a day haven't topped much over 3000, it has less than a dozen strips hosted, I only have three plugins in use (Comicspress manager, CSS manager, and a Spam filter) and it's free of flash or excessive hyperlinking. Is it possible there's just some random hole somewhere that's killing the whole site?

Or is InMotion Hosting just completely full of shit?

Because I am ready to drop 'em like it's hot, but I don't want to find out that there really is some sort of Lovecraftian Elder God sitting in the middle of my site and eating everything and have this same problem come up with the next host I do business with. THERE IS NO REASON THIS PAGE SHOULD COST $220 A MONTH TO MAINTAIN.

Advise me, DeviantArt.

Manly Guys Forum?

Wed Apr 28, 2010, 7:19 PM

Hey guys! I figure I'll put a post about it here as well as my site, there's been some interest expressed in getting a forum happening for Manly Guys. Do enough other people feel like they'd want to go and talk about Pokemon or Sylvester Stallone movies or shoes or whatever people talk about on webcomic forums to make that happen?

Okay so....

Mon Apr 26, 2010, 5:42 PM

Today my webhost suspended my account and locked me out because I was allegedly getting too many hits. Vorked smoothtalked them into reopening it, but I was warned that if I want to continue having people... look at my website I'm going to have to pay them another $50 a year. Now, I think $150 is a mighty ludicrous fee to keep my simple updated-once-weekly webcomic with an archive of less than a dozen strips functioning. I'm in the process of trying to get some ads on the site so I can comp some of my losses, but in the meantime I need to find a way to lessen the big spikes in hits so they (hopefully) don't shut down my site again.

So for the time being I'm going to post comics on my site on Mondays and wait until Wednesday to post them on DA, hopefully that will stagger the spikes a bit.

And I will be sure to let my current host know that I plan to drop them like it's hot if they continue to encourage me to.... not get hits. I've paid them for the year so I'm probably stuck for now, but I will be on the lookout for something more functional.

So if the site wasn't working for you today, that's what went down.

AND ON THAT NOTE: Vorked is a total bro, he is the hero we all wish we could be. If you enjoy reading the comics I draw you should lavish him with attention for keeping everything running.

jhsdjhakshdakshd character design is awesome. I feel like I shouldn't be getting paid to do this job, it's too much fun.

If somebody told me a year ago that I'd be making real people money drawing cartoon monsters today, I would have laughed in their face. And then probably cried. And maybe stepped in front of a train.

My Brother wants everybody to join his cult

Sat Apr 3, 2010, 7:42 PM

Thanks completely to the tireless efforts of the amazing Vorkedlarfleeze and AlienShores we got my webcomic site up with content on it and everything.

Still tinkering with it, so don't be alarmed if you go there in the near future and it appears to be broken

So, April first again.

I think Mudkips were funnier than Lady Gaga and Twilight. DA's brushin' up on it's necro-equine abuse, I see.

Really guys, Twilight isn't even worth the effort it takes to make fun of. Disliking something means you're paying attention to it.

And DA uses the words "Lady Gaga" like thirteen years olds use "cheese" "pants" and "t3h penguin of d00m"

Pulled off an honourable mention in the Escapist's webcomic contest, I'm pretty pleased!

Maybe if someone helps me make a website I'll try to keep it up as a weekly updating thing (I kinda suck at web design stuff myself... and by "kinda suck" I mean "cannot do this at all by any stretch of the imagination") =P

Bilious is making custom Rorschach grappling hooks. Limited run of 25. They're kind of pricey, but if you're a serious bison about cosplay it's worth looking into. And it's a pretty sweet piece of machinery.

So my good buddy GH-Graphics who is quite honestly one of the greatest artists I have ever had the pleasure of knowing personally has entered a Megaman Fanart Contest over at I'm going to point all you folks in the direction of the poll to vote for your favourite entry so you can all go show him some love.
