Along with her father and stepmother, Lydia Deetz moves into a small town outside the city. It turns out that their new house used to belong to the Maitlands, a young married couple who died in an unfortunate accident. The Maitlands’ ghosts don’t wish to share their house with new occupants, deciding to summon a bioexorcist—a poltergeist named Betelgeuse. But as his methods turn out to be more harmful than anticipated, the Maitlands decide to deal with the Deetz on their own, unexpectedly growing fond of the family. After an unfortunate mishap, however, Lydia summons the crazed poltergeist to save the dead couple from a curse mistakenly cast upon them. The price of his aid: Lydia’s hand in marriage. As the ceremony nears completion, the poltergeist is chased away, and all ends well.
