“So what is the pod supposed to do?”
The old man in the corduroy vest taps a finger against his chin. “Let's see – Sorry, the technical explanation goes over most people's heads. Have you heard of cryonics?”
The large box in the center of his cozy lab is covered in strips of interwoven black metal, creating a hard and bumpy shell with a scaly crisscross pattern. A single porthole on the front looks in, though the material is smoky gray and opaque from a distance. Perhaps a small submarine, or a freezer built large enough to hold a person standing within.
“Is that like cryogenics? Freezing people?”
“Indeed!” He walks closer to the box, gesturing for you to follow. “Inside the pod, we can fix space so that, for all intents and purposes, time is prevented from passing. We call it a stasis field.” Pulling at the side, he opens the front door on whining hinges to reveal the interior. “You might say it is exactly like being frozen, but much easier to un-thaw because there are no

A Choice Between Deaths
Once there was an ordinary man. He enjoyed relaxing in the sunshine, time spent alone with his thoughts, watching television and hanging out with friends once a week to play cards.
That was his life and he loved every moment. Hoping nothing would ever change, he only desired a life where he could someday look back at those good times.
One warm and sunny day, he spent the afternoon at his parents' house. They were visiting relatives and wanted someone to check their home. He would relax in a lounge chair on their tall backyard deck. A light breeze perfectly balanced the heat.
Some time later, the man heard strange noises from within the house. Voices, footsteps, heavy bags being set down. A burglar would be more quiet, he assumed. Yet his parents shouldn't be back. Had they called for cleaners? A mechanic?
He stood from the lounge chair, not noticing at the time how the chair disappeared behind him.
Walking through the door from the deck, he stopped and stared at the people

Mister Dancer - ch 1
When did jogging get easy?
Okay, not easy, exactly. At some point these sweaty walks got faster, steadier and maybe even routine. The when doesn’t really matter. Now it’s easier than … work, maybe.
But work will always be hard. Why else would they pay us.
Hustling along the empty sidewalk, the late-morning haze filters the sunlight to a distant warmth. A tiny mail car shoots down the empty street, slowing only when it goes past me. Another streaks through an intersection far ahead.
Factory identical houses, one after another. Dirt lots, maybe an unkempt flower bed, empty driveways next to flood floors. Each home has a few visible differences: window curtains, deck furniture and other outdoor garbage mostly. Back when they were built, each of the thousand or so houses in the neighborhood had been painted one of a hundred pastel colors.
Are they able to use different colors in other places?
I turn at the corner. A few houses down the road, an old lady stands, water can and cutters

Pokemon: the Risen - E1 - HTML
Chapter 0 This time around, things are going to be different. The usual narrator is away and I'll be filling in. Don't worry, I follow his rules, mostly; just a brief introduction and then let the story tell itself. But I should warn you, I don't see this world the way he does. Things will be different, definitely so; I like to think a little realism will go a long way toward making things more interesting. Reality bites, but is all the more wondrous for it.We begin our adventure listening only to night's dry heat. It's too hot for the Kricketots to be still playing and even the Zubats and Hoothoots have gone to roost early. The only creat...

My Mind of Murder - E1
Chapter 1 "Ready? Steady
Fight!" The stands must hold some billions of spectators, world populations seated in a space that questions sanity, tier upon tier of them screaming bloody murder at the two combatants. When one tier of stands has reached far back enough to make viewing the arena impossible due to the sheer distances involved, another tier sits above it, and another and another. Each successive tier is a little higher and a little more sloped, creating a hemispheric dome completed by a small circular glass platform at the very pinnacle for fans to watch down through. The fans in the upper sections must be buckled in, or using or...

INT. HOME OF IRE AND WEEP, LIVINGROOM – LATE MORNINGThe room is small and concise, the livingroom of people who prefer to live elsewhere. A few chairs sit together, made of a woolen fabric that looks very uncomfortable. A flame lamp on a low table struggles desperately to provide light to the gloomy room, as the very air around it seems to choke out all light. A man of around thirty, IRE, sits in one chair; he glares up at the ceiling and looks constantly angry as if by long practice. A woman slightly younger than Ire, WEEP, sits across from him; she continues to cry loudly in to her damp sleeves. Both have gray skin and wear strange, spik...

Pokemon: the Game - Chapter 24
“This will be a one on one battle. Use as many Pokemon as you have. Winner takes half of the loser's Pokedollars.” The young woman is sitting in a harness that hangs down from the cliff edge above. Below her is a long drop to the canyon floor.Zack steps out from a ledge to a harness opposite his opponent. Between them is a stretch of vertical climbing wall mixed with ledges. Several of the ledges have holes in the dirt wall large enough for an average sized Pokemon to walk inside. Cid and a herd of Scraggy watch from above, only their heads poking out over the edge of the canyon wall.“Oh, and if you return a Pokemon that falls off, they ar...

Heroic Spider-Man - Season 2 Issue 1

MJ blows out the candle resting on some sort of cupcake covered in palm leaves and brown grass.Harry leans back in his chair with the biggest grin. “Hope you like this place. It usually has a two month waiting list, but I pulled some strings to get us a table for tonight.”“It sure is unique.” Mary Jane looks around the room.Large tribal masks and folk art cover all the blank spaces on the walls. A live band plays on a stage in the center of the dini...

Character - Halfling Summoner
Greetings Master Vega,I had wished to send you word of my survival, but on consideration I now wonder if I will indeed be alive for much longer. Still, I live now due in part to your lessons and wished to thank you for all that you taught me. So a quick recounting of my planar travels is due, then I will fill you in on current events.Never again will I doubt your ability to send this halfling tumbling through the curtain separating us from those dangerous outside realms. When you unceremoniously tossed me into the portal, wishing me luck in such a good-natured way, I had hoped to end up somewhere relatively safe, Syrania at best or perhaps...

Page 1 - VV's story
The story changes depending on who you ask. Ask the proud Shoanti chieftain, he will say he snuck into the largest Chelaxian estate he could find and stole right from under the noses of an army of corpulent guards its most valued treasure, which turned out to be the eldest daughter of the baron living there. Ask the free-spirited Chelaxian heiress, she will tell you the most handsome man in the world came into her room one night and swept her away from a dreary world of stifling balls and haughty politics, not to mention the most disgusting marriage proposer she had ever laid eyes on. Ask most any gossipy local who heard about the incident...

Monthly Webcomics - Volume 7
Elsie Hooper by Robert KrzykowskiColors are not the only way to create a mood, but they do provide a significant contribution alongside the basic methods of what happens and how the characters react. Vivid or glow-y colors can make a world feel futuristic or dream-like, dull earth-tones are often associated with realism and a hum-drum existence, solid colors can show that the world is simple while shading can be an identifier of complexity. Blues and grays can feel sad, reds and yellows can feel happy, greens and oranges might just make you feel sick. The two most potent though are not technically colors at all; in the West specifically bl...

3 Tips for Thick Skin
I've heard so many people say they want thick skin. Having developed a pretty good thick skin care routine myself, I thought I would share some tips.
Frankly, the people I hear wishing they had thick skin seem to have one wrong idea to begin with: they talk like thick skin means being invulnerable to emotional pain. We might call this the Stoic method – Is there any pain right now? I don't notice any. I can't feel pain because I have thick skin.
Now I'll admit there's a bit of Stoicism mixed into my thick skin care routine, some “fake it until you make it” confidence that you can gain by believing in the process. But denying pain is not going to help you in the long run.
Instead let's think of thick skin as a sort of armor against the pains of the world, something we can put on or take off as needed, with gaps and flexible joints for maneuverability. And just like a quality set of armor, thick skin must be put on in steps.
1) Smile & Laugh
Proper thick skin care starts with

20 Things About Me
:iconOHiNeedTea: tagged me and it's still Friday so here we go. Am I following the rules or whatever?1. I am an infrequent swimmer, I swam for most of my middle school years on the local youth team and then joined the high school swim team for about half of one year, after which I quit and didn't swim again until I started for recreation while going to college.2. I live near a lake, but I don't like to swim in it because I can't see the bottom.3. I used to play the flute in high school (I got to first row of the mid-level band) but I pretty much quit after that from lack of interest, though it did get me a small scholarship for college as ...
