A Samurai Champloo fanart, based on famous Japanese painter Hokusai's woodblock print "Fishing in the Surf". It depicts the scene from the begining of episode 15, when Jin is trying to catch some fish out from the river unsuccessfully and become a bit nervous.

:star::star::star::star: Overall

:star::star::star::star-half::star-empty: Originality

(Yes, once upon a time I had to try myself at writing a critique, and finally! - met the deviation that is definitely worth me spending some time mulling over its peculiarities and enjoying the whole affair.)

Without further ado, vision - nearly perfect (like, seriously perfect), the only thing that may bother serious art connoisseurs (in case the work should be exhibited somewhere in Guggnheim, e.g. ) is the fairly centric composition, revolving around Jin, which brings the unnecessary symmetry into the picture, whilst otherwise the image is flourishing with dynamics!

Another thing (though may be rightfully regarded as extremely subjective) is the use of colour - it's either asking for more contasting colours to be added (like golden and or/orange ochre) to deepen the impact we receive; or on the other hand to be turned into a monochrome lineart.

This however doesn't mean the current colour scheme is wrong, just a few little details of another colour, I believe, could make it even better!

Originality - not 5 out of 5 simply because a fanart is already not an original work, same with using already existing ideas and styles (such as the awesomeness of Hokusai) - but on the other hand, the way you apply your knowledge of various stylistics deserves to be praised!! It's always a pleasure to see a good and tasteful 'crossover' of styles mingling in one picture.

Technique - nearing sublime. Why, you'd ask, not sublime as of now? Well, mostly because of the tricky watercolours, that require certain amounts of practice, mostly in the gradients part of the work, that could require more attention on artist's part.
(So it's a wish for your future development)

The lineart is also very decent (I especially like everything about Jin!) the waves and scarce grass on the cliff look exactly as Hokusai could have drawn them, and may be the foam and the fog could be more intricately inked, same for the disappearing mountain silhouette.

Finally, the impact - perfect.
Otherwise I highly doubt I'd have even bothered to write a critique
Needless to say, 'Samurai Champloo' is one of my favourite anime, and I always refer to it when people ask what's the best product of Japanese animation they should watch.

Therefore it makes me genuinely happy when I discover truly original, witty and stylish fanarts amongst the piles of trite copying of the show - a living thought even if not executed with utter perfection, is a thousand times more precious to me, than a sublime, but heartless, lifeless copy.

Oh Jin, my love, it was his name in the browsing window that brought me to this beautiful deviation

Na itt akartam felhasználni a retro állatos gyereknyomdát a lap sarkában, amit múltkor említettem.

Akkor is nagyon szép!
Haha, tényleg? Ezt nem is tudom elképzelni igazán, hogy jön össze. XD
