Foggy Dawn
some warmups for tonight, wanted to do something a bit more calming, less crazy, since my work for tonight will be more of a hectic piece hehe. I think it's a little too yellow/orange, I should've pushed more on the pinks-blues I think.. ah well haha, my color theory is all funk-faking and tinkering on the fly.
So like the girl in the Old El Paso taco commercial, why not both? :) Okay so I decided to incorporate both into my game's design flow, the borders will be used for the general sets and sport faction-based frames for cards that belong more to one (or more) faction than not, while I'll also have limited runs of the edge-to-edge cards for Heroes and special sets/releases. Right now I plan on having a Core Trial deck for sale at conventions and our local comic shop on Maui which will have a set 54 card deck sampler plus rules sheet and (if I measured this correctly) another 8-10 randomized cards from the Core Set, with a chance to get a full-bleed Hero card.

One thing I liked about having the borders is that it gives me a design element that can help differentiate a card by faction quicker and I think more effectively than by just having the faction banner. An example of this is the ability card Blade Throw, which is only wieldable only by samurai, which are pretty much exclusive to the Red Moon faction. So Blade Throw will have the Red Moon faction banner plus the card border for Red Moon cards.

So yeah... thank you very much to everyone who checked out my post and dropping a line on their thoughts, I appreciate the input a lot! Here's to a crazy, crazy upcoming next 6 weeks :)
Card Frames : A or B
Sorry this isn't art, I just wrapped up a big stint of freelance work but needed to work on this in time for Amazing Comic Con Aloha (if any of y'all are gonna be on Oahu in 2 weeks stop by table H1 in the Artist Alley and say hi!). Anyways, I'm going through my 1.1 card frame revisions and wanted to see what you folks thought... Should I go with A, which is a more traditional Magic: the Gathering style of border frame with art inside, or B, something like Weiss Schwarz or similar games with full-bleed art going to the edges. I kinda know what I wanna do, I'm more curious what the consensus was here on DA; across social media it's been 50/50 split on average, but some platforms voted more for one over the other.

Anyway, yeah, maybe some spitpaints coming in a couple weeks along with an update on some pieces I've been working on, but mostly it'll be wrapping up FOE 1.1 for print and getting everything else prepped for Amazing :)

30min. spitpaint, Photoshop CC2017. I took a gamble in the last 5 minutes haha, the bottom area that's in shadow is basically a messy gradient set to Overlay. I duplicated that, flipped it, and swapped it to Color Dodge..I was thinking that since the layer isn't too bright it might not blow out the top area with pure white. Well, it was almost pure white lol, but lowering the lightness and tinkering with the saturation gave this really fun glow to play with, like there was some atmosphere in the room and that let the let bend around the big guy's head and punch up some of the shadows. If it didn't work out I would've just deleted the layer lol but I think it turned out okay.
30min. spitpaint, Photoshop CC2017... originally I was thinking of having them fish for the dinosaur from the other piece I did, but then had this idea for a giant fish thing instead, kinda like the mutant whale that Kevin Costner hunted in Waterworld; I have a bit of a fear of deep water so that scene is burnt into my subconscious lol.  But yeah, even though stuff like this would freak me out in real life I find painting things like this, just trying to hit the effects quickly and have the scene fall into place, is pretty relaxing.

The illusion of the deep sea walls are created by making gradients funneling down at an angle, then going over with a large (500px - 1400px) smudge tool along the edges, just lightly dabbing here and there, setting it to Overlay. Duplicate the layer, shrink it down a bit, mess with the edges more, then swap to Soft Light. Repeat one more time, reverting back to Overlay, sets up the 'wall' effects pretty well, then make a couple quick and dirty gradient layers set to soft light and/or overlay and play with the opacities to give it a slightly murky feel. I fumble around in 30 minutes and hope that things just work hahah.

I'm swamped with work. Swamped. But not just art-related stuff, which I'm superduper grateful for, but my regular 9-to-5 with my family's business is going through some busy times, too.  All and all this means that sleep is kicked off to the side until the weekend and I feel like I'm in college again... only I'm a bit older now and not half as spry when I get 4hrs of sleep.. :)  You know how they say you should do things "for the love"?  I'm doing things for the love right now, it feels like exercise, like that almost acidic burn that's kind of good to feel from time to time.  The next couple months will be really crazy then things will slow down come fall... but December... whoo boy... that'll be a time to buckle down and Just Do It™.

I can't wait to get the art for my game done because then I can piece all the pieces together and start showing you folks what I'm working on.  A couple people have guessed correctly, it's actually not a terribly well-hidden secret lol, but yeah... it's fun, a bucket list kind of project that I'll be happy with completing whether it sells 2 copies or 2,000,000 copies.  Reviewing my personal projects list, I seem to gravtitate towards niche markets, like the iOS games I like to work on are turn-based RPGs, basically the smallest sliver of marketshare you can fight for in the App Store haha :D  This personal project is kind of along those lines, but it's fun and it'll be mine.

Well, we're over halfway done with June, I'm about 3 or 4 weeks behind schedule, but it's fine..things will get done, as they always have, and this is something I *will* finish this year and then.... insanity :)

Freakin' beautiful work. Would you do tutorials for speedpaint by chance?
cobaltplasma Featured By Owner Sep 19, 2018   Digital Artist
Thanks! I've been tinkering with the idea of doing some tutorials, I mean I don't think I'm an expert on speedpainting by any stretch hehe but time-permitting I'll try my hand at it at some point. Probably after I'm done with this upcoming convention.

Haha it's all good, thank you very much for the kind words :) I'm just some dude who draws stuff, I'm happy folks enjoy it. A lot of it is a labor of love, a decent amount freelance work, but all of it has been fun to create.

Thanks again :)
