Drizzt and Entreri by cmalidore Drizzt and Entreri by cmalidore
So, I've not done a fanart for about 2 years now... I figured maybe I could get away with one or two. I don't really enjoy fanart that much, but to be honest I want to give homage to the things that got me into fantasy illustration in the first place - among the list of things are these characters. With homage in mind instead of senseless fanart - I actually enjoyed this piece and looked forward to working on it.

And yeah, I'll still get the obligatory "Why paint Drizzt? he's so over done" comments, but y'know? I honestly don't care.... I'll always get the people who think that dark elf fanart is unoriginal. Oddly enough these are usually the same people who have little redeemable factors about their own work..... but here is hardly the place for that speech.

To those who actually do like fanart, here is Drizzt Do'Urden and Artemis Entreri of the well known RA Salvatore fantasy series through Wizards of The Coast. A few days worth of work, though with plenty of breaks. Put it all together and I could have done this in the better part of a day I imagine.

This was painted in Painter IX over a very( very) rough pencil sketch. I've not used the program for about half a year, so this was a nice way to stretch the fingers a lil :)

I've been a Drizzt fan for along time but the development Entreri went through going from Evil to Chatoic Neutral was all it took to convert me to his side.

I've always been drawn to the tragic hero types as well. Here's a guy who's gone through all sorts of hell to discover himself. I've enjoyed the conflict of the character for some time now .

SCREW those "over done" comments! The rivalry between Drizzt and Entreri is one the most epic of all time!!!
I freaking love this.

It truly is over done... but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by fine folks such as yourself :D

I'm JUST about to start "Homeland" again. I got introduced to the characters during a stint in a military hospital during the Gulf War. One of my friends in the bunk next to me threw me a beat up old copy of "Homeland", and being an RPG dork at the time I bit right away ;) It's just cool to see people still interested in this story after so long. :headbang:

Homeland is a great one. I was introduced on the Icewind Dale trilogy, but I wish it had been Homeland.

no problem, i like everything about your painting, one of the things that really did it for me is that there's action in your painting. not to many of those around especially when it comes to Drizzt and Entreri.

Which is why I did it this way - I grew up as an action based artist. Damage from reading too much comics I guess haha. But none the less everyone else seems to do pinups... and that bugs me, gotta get some new flavor in there :)

Thanks! I love blue cave lighting, so it was worth the switch over, I like using a wide range of colors - tends to breathe more life into a picture :)

I'm glad you like it.

Re-read the series, you know you wanna ;)

Yeah ;) I just get distracted with the bajillion other books I bought but haven't finished reading >.<

I still have the old paperbacks from when Forgotten Realms was owned by TSR ;_;

Ah yes me too, I'm always wanting to re-read em too but always have better things to take care of first or read or whatever. Sad times. I have more Dragonlance than Forgotten Realms, but yeah - the ol TSR books are worth having :)

I love this. I've only read the Hunter's Blades trilogy though, but it was one of my favorites.

Only one bit of critisism, probably gonna be set upon by pirahnas for it though.

Don't their heads seem a little disproportionate to their bodies? Kinda look like kids when you look at them a certain way. Still, better than anything I can do.

No worries, I can take criticism :). The heads are a lil off, I see it mostly on Entreri but I think they're both a bit disproportionate. I never cared enough to fix it, I put so little emphasis on fanart that it never meant much to me.... but I might some day :)

This I count among some of the best Drizzt art I've seen; and there's so bloody much of it, I think that says something to me. The mood and lighting is just fantastic! I have nothing negative to say about this. Fave, most definitely.

I still think Artemis needs some fixings, but all in all I think it's an alright piece. I took great inspiration from Todd Lockwood, who personally I think does some of the best Drizzt art around (I'm biased though hehe). But yeah, I've noticed an extreme amount of Drizzt art, and wanted to add one to the "acceptable" pile since a lot of it is..... questionable hehehe.

Glad you like it! :D

I grow tired of a lot of the anime-ized characters. The D&D and anime genre's both have a common audience, but in the end the general styles applied to both are pretty different - I try and keep my fanart closer to what it was originally penned as. So I follow the illustrators in this case :).

Half a year later, I'm still fairly happy with how it turned out. Which isn't too bad at all. Usually I hate the pieces after this long.
