Molly Blue pencil 9A

By cloudmonet
A girl and her lizard! Drawn October 2007.

The finished Molly Blue pages are originally made at 3300 x 4400 pixels, with the pen lines about five pixels thick. When I reduce them five times to 660 x 880 pixels, the pen line becomes one pixel thick, so now you know how I came up with this odd image size. 3300 x 4400 pixels is how big a piece of 11 x 14 inch drawing paper becomes at 300 dots per inch. But they're weren't really drawn on 11 x 14, rather one row of panels at a time on 8.5 x 11 inch printer paper, which is much whiter than drawing paper, and the right size for my scanner.

I never scanned this drawing back in 2007. I used my light box to trace it in ink on another 8.5 x 11 sheet, and scanned the ink drawing. That was roughly how I understood "real" comic artists did it, at least before computers got involved. Draw it about twice as big as the final page, with the panels all laid out. I was thinking a manga page was roughly 5.5 x 7 inches.

And the text? I printed it out the size it would be relative to this drawing and traced it. Initially I inked the word balloons too. Now they're all drawn digitally.

This drawing had two closeups that I still really like.
