Fleece Hat Tutorial by clearkid Fleece Hat Tutorial by clearkid
Watch out, it's a big file!

Also see how to color fleece eyes to go on your hat. --> [link]
How to replace the band with ear-flaps! --> [link]
And how to sew on ears! --> [link]

Pattern: also notes the size of the rectangle
NOTE: pattern includes a 1/4" or .6cm seam allowance. That means sew that far from the edge. :)

If you are one of the many people only familiar with the metric system, I'm sorry I didn't include those measurements but here is a wonderful conversion tool. --> [link]

Alright you've been waiting for it so here it is. Firstly I'd like to state that this was a big pain to make. I have no idea how others can stand to make these.

Now this is just a basic hat so you can embellish it however you want. Please don't ask me how to make anything specific; either you'll have to figure it out or buy it from me. ;)

Please don't post this anywhere, kindly leave a link instead.
Tutorial (c) me, Clearkid - For the glory of God!

Edit: OK, so I've had several people express confusion on the last step. I will attempt to clarify it here:

First sew the short edges of the band together, forming a loop. Then fold it the long way with the seam inside so you have a double thick loop. Take your main hat part and turn it inside out with the seams facing out. Turn the hat upside-down like a bowl! Now, take your double thick band with it's two raw edges facing up, and place it INSIDE the hat so that those two edges line up the the edge of the hat. Pin it together starting with the seam of the loop lined up with the back seam of you hat. Then fold it in half and pin the front, and then the sides and in-between. Then you're going to sew the tree layers together at the top. When you've finished, take out your pins and fold the brim down, and turn the hat right-side-out again to finish.

Now, that's the detailed explaination. In essence, all you're really doing in the last step, is sewing the brim to the bottom of the hat in a way that hides the seam on the inside. Hope it helps guys! If you still have questions, feel free to post them here. :D

And one last thing. If you make a hat, I'd love to see it. You can post your links here. :3

Such a great tutorial! I had to adjust it for a child but still turned out awesome!
for those that might be curious how to make it smaller, Just measure your kids head around, divide by 4 and make the triangle pieces width match that. to do that, i just zoomed out a bit and then traced it! Super easy!!!
here's a link to the ones i made for my sons

My boys are 4 months old, and I'm too cheap to pay money for winter hats lol

Hi! After taking a little while to figure out your tutorial I decided I was going to brave the waters of the hat-making world! My mom and I made a deal, and the outcome of that would be that I get to have a sewing machine! (Yaayy!) I've made a few things already in class, and a few more handsewn things outside of it. Not to mention no-tie blankets (so many... Blankets...) But I digress, the reason Ive just trailed off is because it is actually relevant. I was confused as to what kind of fleece you've used? I get most of mine from Joann's Fabric's or Walmart if I'm in a hurry, and I've used an abundance of fleece before. However, most of the anti-pill fleece I've used (I'm assuming you do too..?) Seems a bit thin to make a hat with. Is there a thicker kind I can use? Or am I using the wrong type of fleece? Advice would be really appreciated! Thank you for the awesome hat tutorial as well.

That light bulb that goes off when you realize where you went wrong when sewing on the headband part.... .__.
Desert-Poppy Featured By Owner Jan 10, 2015
This is a great tutorial and I plan on using it. However, I would like to add a piece that flops over in the back like this picture…
However, I am unsure how to do it with fleece. Any tips would be helpful! Thank you!
BlackRainboww0224 Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Yes it'll be just fine with fleece as long as you have a good base to work off of.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've made several hats with it now as I can't get enough XD

However, I am having a LOT of trouble with one part... The band always seems to be too small for the hat! When I sew it on, there is always extra main-hat-body material even if I'e already sewed the whole band on, leading to big poofs in the finished hat. I used exactly the dimensions it said on the pattern for the rectangle, and I've added up to four whole inches and it's still too small. I think I must be sewing something wrong, but I can't figure out what! I would be so, so grateful if somebody could please help.

Ah, after reading a little further back in the comments section I found the answer to my problem. Thanks again for the tutorial! Perhaps I will post some pictures of my completed Toothless hat army afterwords.

Wow, just was looking back through sewing patterns on here, and I think I forgot to tell you I featured your tutorial on my blog a long time ago! I really loved this pattern, so I had to share it with others (credited to you, of course~)

Thanks for teaching me how to make fleece hats, btw! This was and still is a really great tutorial. :3
LuluHaven Featured By Owner Jan 5, 2014
I sooo love your tutorial. :)

But can I ask one thing, can I adjust the sizes? I mean, remove some inches from the main pattern and add some inches to the rectangular pattern? I really want the rectangle part to be bigger. owo Would that still work?

Thanks for response if ever :>

Thank you so much for this!! I am looking to make a hat for a Halloween costume, and finding a basic hat pattern was much harder than it should've been!
ShadowRyghas Featured By Owner Sep 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
So, wait, if I'm making for a slightly larger head than usual (24 inches), I don't change the size of the hat itself, just the band? =o Is that what I'm gathering?
