Description
The Douglas AC-47 was an evolution of the C-47 Skytrain which came about during the Vietnam War when a need was found for a close air support gunship.
The first incarnations of the AC-47 Spooky had various armaments including a set-up with 10 x standard .30 cal machine guns, but miniguns were preferred and 3 x 7.62 mm miniguns on the port side became standard.
The left wing down circling attack proved effective, and each aircraft carried 24,000 rounds so could linger in the combat area for a long time before running out of ammunition.
This example is an AC-47 of the Dominican Republic Air Force 1972.
