Winter's Child by Ciuva Winter's Child by Ciuva
When you're 25, it's kind of a big deal to lead your friends into mortal danger on and off for two years. When you're 25, and things are getting really bad, it feels better to be led than to be the one making the decisions and doing the leading. When you're 25, and have lost all your belief in humanity, it's not easy risking your life for said humanity. When you're 25, and have fallen in love for the first time in your life, it's not easy sending Mr. Right into a deadly battle, and go about risking torture and death yourself. When you're 25, it's not easy leading armies, when you've hardly ever seen an army before. When you're 25, and come from a small village, and have spent your life travelling with only yourself as company, it's not easy suddenly having to make decisions affecting thousands, perhaps millions of people you have never met and never liked to begin with. When you're only 25, it's not easy being the heroine.

Shanouna, as you probably will never see her again and have certainly not seen her before. Somewhere in the first 6 months of her first quest, the one before my book starts, they were passing over some huge mountains in the wintertime, just starting to realize what was about to happen. Shanouna was always riding in the front, not only because she was the only one there at the moment able to look for strangers and enemies, or because she was (unvoluntarily) their leader - but because then, for once, in the snow and rain in the mountains, she could let her guard down, she could lower the shield she constantly hid her feelings and emotions behind. A year later, it was winter again, and the fellowship had grown, and she were about to break down. Riding through the snow in the hills near the border to Northern Charbakin, she would (even though there was now other people able to be scouts and lookouts with her) ride up front, perhaps now and then with Ceredi as company, and she would allow herself to think things through. She would think about Jerachan, whom she knew she would never get - not because he didn't love her, no, he had joined in a quest he believed hopeless and a waste of time just for her, just to help her. She thought about how she might never see him again, and how she would very likely disappear from him. She preferred to think of it that way - it was just too harsh to think of it as the brutal reality; that she would probably be killed before she ever saw him again. Little did she know that there were other things in the way, that they would only get little time together nonetheless, even though Jerachan lived to become an old man and Shanouna still was alive when he died. Funny how fate twists and turns and you yourself, of which it is about, know nothing.

Yet again, different than I tend to do. Not exactly dark, as my other Shanouna-pictures. I know several things are wrong with the facial features, but I don't care. That's not why this pic was made. I wanted to show you how Shanouna really was, once, how vulnerable and innocent she was. 25 is young for being the saver of the world (turns out it wasn't anyway, but... everyone thought so at that point) and she didn't feel ready for it. She was scared, but could never show it. So this is, in a way, the real Shanouna.
I tried to paint something remotely similar to snow falling, but I didn't succeed too much. And I even forgot to add it in some places. Oh well. I might draw a background for this one day, I picture it in my mind already, but for now I just wanted to upload it and show you. Originally, this was supposed to be a halloween pic, and it started out with a bright orange canvas. Which is perhaps why there is so much orange in the shadows. And I wanted to test whether it actually was right that when the light is cold, the shadows are warm(er). But I think I should have used more blueish light anyway. And I know the ear is horrible. But at least it's there. And now this is already a way too long description.

Edit: Added a quick background as well. Looks better, doesn't it? (Please say it does...)

I really like this picture :) I read your description, and now I'm curious. Are you writing a book about a girl called Shanouna, and drawing pictures of her too? That's really awesome, I would like to be an author too!

Thanks very much :) Yes, I'm writing a book (have been for the last six years), and Shanouna's the main character. I like to draw pictures of them so I have something to look at when I'm describing them - even though they don't look the same in all pictures, it's more how their expression is and how they seem to be in the pic - just to make it easier for myself.

It's much work trying to write a book, but it's definitely worth it. But if you ever decide to try; don't rush it. I did, and I had to start over... but it's so much fun! :D

Oh I know, I have tried writing several books, just for practice, and I never enjoy myself more than when I'm writing :) I am only sixteen so I've got plenty of time to improve ;) And you know what? I often draw pictures of my characters too! It helps make them real, in my opinion. But I am not good at drawing at all, so those drawings will never be submitted here =P Good luck with your book, I hope you get it published, it seems good! And if you'd like a beta opinion, I'm here, even though I haven't got much experience :)

You're going to regret that you said that, because I'm going to remember it ;) Seriously, one can never get enough opinions on it.

Yes, character drawing helps so much, I'm never able to have a very clear picture of them in my head without drawing them first. You've got plenty of time. :D (oooh, look who's talking - I'm so impatient with writing I should have gotten a prize for it. )

Hahaha me too. I started writing when I was twelve, and then I was like, oooh I must finish it before I'm thirteen, or I'll be too old :o Haha =P Calmed down a bit now though ;) Feel free to hold me to my promise, it's always fun to read other's stuff (unless it's in JK Rowling's league, then I'll just be depressed =P hehe)

Oh well, I certainly don't believe I'm in her league... Though that would have been simply awesome if I was. =P But I might just remember it ;)

Feels kinda weird to write replies simultaneously in English AND Norwegian... to the same person :D

Lol I know :) I was considering switching to norwegian, but it would've been weird, so I just..er...went with the flow? =P If I was in JK Rowlings league...oh wow, I dunno what I'd do ;) She's like the best writer ever :)

Thank you very much! The background was pretty much coincidence, originally there was no background, and then I just added some snowy mountains because it looked a bit silly with snow and nothing else... It was a bit of a colour experiment too, with the shadows and light and all, so I'm very glad they work :D

I'm actually thinking of just removing the falling snow, because if not, I think I'll have to add more falling snow in the background, the sky can't be blue, and... yeah. Don't really need the falling snow that much now that I've added the snowy hills anyway.

i just love how you take a scene from your book and put it to (digital) paper - and as always your description totally justifies the piece too - it's an excellent piece - love it

Thanks a lot - seems like I can't let the prologue go just yet... ;) (that's where this is from) I didn't really have the description in mind when drawing, it was more like "oh, she just has to be blonde, it will... hey! It's Shanouna!". And then it just turned out this way, as always. But I've been having this particular type of scene in my mind for a while now.

Thanks a lot for the fav as well :)

Well, considering I'm totally stuck on how everything is going to be solved, it can take quite a while... I don't wanna use some lame idea that's only remotely logical, and that isn't good, and unfortunately that type of ideas are all I can come up with right now. But I'm thinking of it... As soon as I get that one in place, I can continue to plan the storyline and start to write again...

well the best way to do it is to not rush it - you;re nothing if not thorough - that's wh yi think you;re really gonna make a go of the book and do well with it

Quite seriously I don't really think I could live with myself if I didn't do it thoroughly. I was wondering whether I perhaps should just start to write - to get to know both sides in the story and get an opportunity to find out what they think and feel and do with the whole business, but on the other hand - that's what I've done before, and it didn't work then. Oh well, I'll find something...
