Even the good ones die by Ciuva Even the good ones die by Ciuva
This is a character from the story before the first book. Ejontal. He is an elf, but I've forgotten what kind he is. It don't matter to him anyway. He is a traveller and hunter(those stripes on his face are from animal's claws - a lynx), fairly young for an elf (only between 100 and 200 when the story took place) and he was also quite young in his mind - the adventure spirit had not died yet. I think he was supposed to be a gelgarin elf, but I think he fits more to be a nomad. After his adventure with Shanouna and some other characters was over, he re-took his old profession. Now I'm doing a lot of switching between characters, as he and Cephal, another elf, completely has swapped professions and history...

Ejontal had a peaceful upbringing, being born after the elves were done with their wars, and he learnt his profession from his uncle. He wasn't always the most social guy, but he was at home in the forest and, more than most elves, true to the original spirit of the elves. Some said he was the image of Aiwar Kan, the first leader and the founder of Aiwar Einn, the third clan of the nomad elves. He was happy with his life, living in the forest, knowing all the creatures there (being an hunter didn't really mean he hunted down everything that moved, it was more their name of a woodsman, a ranger, a man who provided for himself. At least in his case.), but still belonging to a village and having friends and relatives there. However, things changed among the elves. The elves themselves changed, and Ejontal did not like it. He never approved of what Riandel, the queen of the elves, said, though he did not break out in open rebellion either. Gradually, he isolated himself more and more from the other elves. But when the queen's people came to make him swear an oath of loyalty to the throne, he could not do it. It is never really known to anyone what happened next; all his friends ever got to know was that he was dead. Died for his beliefs, for staying true to what the elves initially believed in, staying true to the gods' intention for them. But he never got the status Cephal's death got, he became a hero for the other elves against the queen. Ejontal was nearly forgotten, except by Shanouna and his other friends.

Or is he really dead?

Soo, this is him, depicted in the magical forest he loved so dearly (some say the forest actually defended him - his killers were never seen again) the way he looked in his last years. Initially, this was supposed to be a girl, but he grew more masculine and ended up like an elvish boy. I know you can't see his ears, I wasn't bothered to. I had also refined his lips, but it looked far better this way. It looks more like him.

I used it before, but I found it looked so stiff and unnatural, so I stopped. Now I just have a very dark base, and then apply regular brush strokes with gradually smaller brush the lighter the colour gets. But that one was the first where I sort of "found" that technique, I used smudge before.

Yes, it is really coming easier. I think I've been too caught up in tutorials and what they say you should do when I really should just... paint. So when I did his hair, I just painted along, almost without thinking. At least it looks less stiff and blocky than I tend to paint it... :D

i find tutorials are good ways to start off, but i end up having to do what works the best for me. it's a great way to get ideas though

Yes, and they can make you think of things you otherwise wouldn't have thought of, for example the lightning and shading in hair in general - wouldn't have known that otherwise. But in the end I don't really think tutorials can be more than a help to start and a way to find a way it can be done.

EXCELLENT hair

EXXXXX-CELLLLL-ENT

my favourite of your hairs (if that makes sense lol)

clouds too made me wonder if this is digital or painting - and that overall look of resignation is so spot on!

Thank you :)

It makes sense, yes :D I'm going to stop paying attention to tutorials - with this pic, I just scribbled down the hair, and look - I'd say it's better (at least less stiff) than many of those where I've followed tutorials closely. And the clouds too, the way I painted it breaks with any tutorials I've read. And I've read many. So now I'm just going to go my own way with painting, tutorials are overrated.

I'm just so happy I finally found a way to paint clouds... I need them for another picture but haven't been able to get them right.

Oh well. Now I'm just babbling again.

"Critique Welcome
This user has specified no particular preference in regards to the critique intensity of the comments received for this deviation. Both critical and non-critical comments are welcome equally. "

Alrighty then.
Friendly critique :aww:

1 His right eye (the left in the picture) needs to be smaller, I think.
2 The fact that I can't see their ears is rather strange, I think thats your style - but you never know, if you try touching up, it could come out good.

- - End of Critique --

:omg: You never cease to amaze me! I love the hair, you are truley skilled; and the clouds look so cloud like I just stared for a while o_o

:D I just love the way you draw your people, you have a very unique style and the person in this picture (Ejontal, as you call him) great with the colour scheme =) You're defiantly not afraid to mess with colours.

I forgot to change it to "advanced critique encouraged", actually :D

1. Actually, his left eye (to the right) needs to be bigger, as he now has "human" eyes - elves are supposed to have larger eyes. But at least they should have been at the same size :D
2. It looks weird without the ears. Especially because the hair doesn't cover that area. But what can I say - we all do what we can to avoid painting what we don't feel good at painting...

I'm so glad the clouds turned out good - I've been trying to find a way to draw clouds for another picture, and then suddenly I just put something down in this picture and it turned out well, so I haven't only made them well for this picture, I have saved another picture too :)
Somehow I just started to experiment with colours, and since then I haven't been able to stop. And it's quite interesting, seeing how colours go together - how much is what colour it is, and how much is the colours around it - for example, the skin is yellow. The most yellow colour you can find, only desaturated a bit. And to think that only a while ago I NEVER experimented with anything...
And at last I've found "my" way to draw hair...

Thanks a lot for the comment, and thanks a lot for the fav too! Very glad you like it. :)

Not more than two hours, max. Probably less. Stroke of luck! But the greatest thing is that these are like the clouds I wanted in the rayhin-picture, so now I know how to do them *dances happily around* And thanks a lot for the fav! :D

I was lucky. And I had the main sketch from before (okay, only the skin colour and a vague indication of where the eyes were supposed to go). But with the clouds: I was lucky. Really lucky.
