Thunderhead by cityrose Thunderhead by cityrose
I recently traveled to the NSW/VIC border to spend a week with family. I fully documented my stay- here is one of the 500 photos taken on the trip. Needless to say, I looked like a paparazzi wannabe. ^_^

This was on the plane heading through south-east Queensland. Queensland has copped a lot of bad storms recently- the plane had to fly around the bulk of it. Here's what a thunderhead looks like- nasty fellow!

I´m very afriad of flying, but at the same time I love it. I don´t know why I´m afraid, but it is moments when views like this appear that make me love flying :) Amazing picture..

Fantastic.

Got chills from this. I am very fascinated with storms and we just don't see them from above often enough.

Why do all things dangerous look so beautiful? Looking at that, you know what the people below are in for, but you just can't help staring at the beauty of such a massive ....... thing! You just don't get the full perspective on the ground of the full size... Seeing the small fields and roads below makes our lives seem so small and insignificant compared to that...

Nature will always have the last say!

Once when I was little, I saw a picture like that, but I haven't a camera, so I'm sitll complaining myself for that and waiting for the clouds to repit it.

Nice photo.

Oh cool, and in an area I'm actually familiar with too :sun: pretty good photo, the storm hasn't even fully-formed but you can see the basic form taking shape, forming an "anvil" at the top where rising clouds reach a "ceiling" of cold air and spread out 8-)

That's not fully formed yet?! I would love to see a fully formed storm from above... Not just in picture form, but with my own eyes...

Still impressive, even at juvenille stage...

Better yet, look at this dramatic photo of a fully-fledged storm system taken from space [link] :omg: What I decsribed in my first comment is very well illustrated here, the flat tops of the storms are icy clouds that have gone as high as the atmosphere will let them, so they "spread out" rather than continue to grow upwards and form what's called an "anvil" (the one forming in this deviation here seems to be blowing off to he right) It's a key feature any severe storm will often display, really amazing at late sunset when darkness has fallen over the land yet the incredibly high tops of the clouds are still bathed in the golden glow of the afternoon Sun :sun:

:fear: Mummy!

Very impressive cloud! I bet it looks impressive at sunset! We get darkness early, while the storm takes all the light! Typical. Then again, would you want to argue with that? The cloud mass shows just how thin our atmosphere is. It seems so vast to us, but in comparison to the Earths' size, it's so small...

Also explains really well, why the centre of the storm can be miles away from you, but you still see the lightning flashes and why the thunder can take minutes to actually get to you... Amazing...

Thanks for that! ^_~

I've seen a gazillion of these from the plane, they never fail to impress. The best was over the Blue Mountains near Sydney. It was clear why they are called the Blue Mountains, they were, literally, blue.

It's difficult to capture cloudscapes and thunderheads well. Kudoes to you on the DD!
