I actually did some drawing this week, more than I've done in over a year, and more polished than anything I have drawn in that time. It's reminded me how much I enjoy drawing, so I'm looking for an excuse to do some more, and to stretch my artistic legs a little. Anyone interested in doing a sketch trade?

A year since a journal update, you say?  Four months since any new art, and ten since anything finished, you say?

Well, in a sentence, I haven't had any new art to share - and indeed, haven't done anything aside from what's already here - because in the last year I moved, started a business and had a baby.  Natasha was born last July and has definitely kept me very busy.

I will be attending three conventions this year - Ad Astra in Toronto April 13-15, Gen Con in Indianapolis August 16-19 and Fan Expo in Toronto August 23-26 - but no longer as an artist; I will be representing Brain Lag, my scifi/fantasy novel publishing company.  We have three books, including my second, Halcyon, a scifi novel about a computer virus that targets cybernetic implants, and Ruins of Change by J. R. Dwornik - for which I shared the cover art last year - an epic fantasy about a treasure hunter who finds more than she bargained for.  For more information about our books and to purchase paper or ebook copies, be sure to visit the website. (Halcyon is not yet available, but will be this spring.)

Honestly, between the baby and the business I don't anticipate having much new art to share for a while, but you can keep track of my goings-on through my Livejournal.  Hopefully after Halcyon is released and Ad Astra is over things will settle down enough for me to work on some art.  I have read some very good art instruction books recently and am eager to work on improving...

Just a brief update to apologize for the dearth of activity here.  Hah, it's been so long since I actually finished anything that I completely forgot to add my signature to my new art!  I don't want to promise anything since I've disappointed before, but more new art should be coming soon.  Now that huge project is out of the way and I'm starting to learn better discipline for handling my free time, I intend to get some art done over the next couple months.

I've also done a major clean-up of my gallery.  Haven't deleted anything (yet) but featured art has been trimmed down to a single page.  Everything else can still be found in the various folders.

Hope to see you guys again soon!

Belated thank you to everyone who visited me at Fan Expo recently!  Despite anything else, that's still my favourite artist's alley, and I hope to keep going.

Just wanted to let you all know that there will be new art coming, and hopefully lots of it!  After Fan Expo, I got an idea to draw sheets of quarter-page fanart portraits for various games/series I enjoy.  I already sketched three sheets this week!  The idea is to get as many of these done for next con season as possible, so stay tuned for lots of fanart.  I posted sketches of the first two sheets, from Final Fantasy VII and Tales of Symphonia, to my blog, so head on over to take a look.

I also picked up some Prismacolor brush pens today.  Take a look at my latest picture for my first test with them.  I just may be able to make things with these.

Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by my table at Gen Con last weekend!  I had a great time and it was really awesome meeting all of you.

Now that Gen Con is past, Aurius is now officially on sale!  Aurius is a young adult fantasy novel telling the story of Jacob Marshall, a young man from the modern world learning to be a hero in a fantasy world.  As he gets past his initial excitement with an escape from reality and begins to understand what it really means to sacrifice himself for the greater good, it becomes a very trying, humbling, and transformative experience.  Jacob's biggest challenge may be facing himself.  Called "authentic," "sensitive," and "satisfying" by expert Amazon.com reviewers, Aurius is a monument to the resilience of human nature and a poignant exploration of the psyche of a developing teenager.

Purchase a paperback copy from my website or an ebook version from Smashwords, where you can sample 50% of the book before purchasing, or check out my blog for more information on the story, including a full synopsis, character information, and fanart!

Spread the word and help out a new author!

Thanks to everyone who had a look at - and especially bid on - my art at Polaris last weekend!  Gen Con in Indianapolis is now two weeks away, and I'm working on some snazzy new art to decorate my table where I will be selling my book.  Hope to see you there!

On a more personal note, I've been growing more frustrated with my digital art and more enamored of my traditional work lately.  So, expect to see more marker work from me in the near-ish future!  Also, I apologize for not getting back regarding posting sketches here. ^_^;  I just haven't drawn anything new of late, aside from the big picture I'm already working on colouring now and must complete by next weekend at the absolute latest.

My work will be appearing at the following conventions this summer:

Polaris - Toronto, Ontario - July 16-18
Gen Con - Indianapolis, Indiana - August 5-8
Fan Expo - Toronto, Ontario - August 27-29

I will be in the Artist's Alley at Fan Expo, the art show at Polaris, and the Author's Avenue at Gen Con.  That's right, at Gen Con, I will be selling my book.  Aurius is a young adult fantasy novel about destiny, reality, self-acceptance, and finding home.  Visit my blog for more information about it.  I'll be posting the cover artwork soon, so stay tuned.

Sorry for the continued lack of new art here.  In that vein, I have a question for all of you: would you like me to post sketches here?  Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks everyone for 5,000 hits!  I'm starting to get comments/favourites with regularity now, and even though I remain terribly unpopular here, I find that heartening.

Posting that art improvement meme has left me feeling open, so forgive me this somewhat personal aside.  A very busy holiday season has kept me from doing much art of late, though things are settling down now.  Now that the last catgirl calendar is done and all other art obligations are past, I'm going to try to focus on colouring some art from the last couple years that have been waiting for other projects to finish.

I don't yet know what impact it will have on my work, but I had a pretty severe art crash about a month ago, and I pretty much decided I just can't take this seriously anymore.  I'm still feeling fairly fragile in that regard and I've done very little art since it occurred, but I'm still going to do my best to get better and I will always try out different styles.  I'm also looking forward to finishing some of the work I've been sitting on.

Anyway, I just want to say thanks for being there with me and this year... well, it'll be an interesting one.

So, how was your Christmas?

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my table at Fan Expo!  It was great meeting all of you and I had a lot of fun.  I'm really growing rather fond of this whole artist's alley business.  But, my next con may be somewhere quite a bit farther away.  Hmmmmm...

In the meantime, I got inspired, of a sort, at Fan Expo, and I want to try to push my limits.  So, the floor is open for suggestions of things to draw that are not what I normally do (based at least on what I have available here).  Go nuts!  Whether it's style, subject matter, mood, or what have you, the sky's the limit!  Just throw your ideas out there and I'll try to draw what I like.

Note: This is not an offer for free sketch requests.  Please don't ask me to draw your character unless it poses some technical challenge to me.  I'm trying to challenge myself and see what I can do, so if you can keep that in mind when you comment, I'm sure I'll get some great ideas from you good people.  I'll post any drawings I do based on suggestions I receive to my scraps, unless I get requests to post them to my main gallery.

Have at!

I'm looking to make a few extra dollars while I don't have a regular job, so I've decided to open up commissions.  This is somewhat experimental, so at this time, I'm only open for three slots.

I will draw:
  • Humans/humanoids (elves, dwarves, centaurs, orcs, etc.)
  • Furries
  • Regular/mythological animals
  • Original characters or fanart

I will NOT draw:
  • Nudity/adult material.  Sorry, it's just not what I do.  I'll do skimpy clothing, but nothing sexually suggestive.

If you have any questions about what I'll draw, feel free to ask.  There are things I'm not so experienced with - such as highly detailed machinery/cybernetics/whathaveyou - but I'm generally pretty open with most subjects and I do enjoy a challenge.  Just let me know what you have in mind and I'll let you know if I can draw it, and if it will cost extra to do.

Prices:
  • Sketch: $15 - Example
Pencil lineart, as complete as it would be as if it was going to be inked and coloured.  Basic background only.  I am accepting a maximum of one sketch commission.
  • Marker/digital cel style shading: $40 - Example marker - Example digital cel style
  • Digitally painted lineart: $55 - Example

All prices above are for single character portraits, full body or down to thighs/knees with no background or simple backdrop.

Add-ons:
  • Additional characters
Depending on complexity, more than one character isn't that much more work and will add probably 25%-30% to the commission cost. (e.g. a two-character sketch would likely cost $20, two-character marker image around $50, etc.)
  • Background
For a simple background - such as this or this - add 50%-75% to the commission cost.  For a complex background - such as this or this - the final price could double or more.  Please let me know what you have in mind and I can give you an accurate quote for the work.

If there is something else in my gallery similar to what you have in mind that I did not mention here, please let me know!  I'm flexible and open to other ideas.

Commission policies:
  • Please e-mail or note me on DeviantArt if you are interested in commissioning me.
  • Please provide reference images if possible!  If not, give me as much detail as you can on the characters.  I want to make sure to give you what you are looking for.
  • The above prices quoted are in U.S. dollars.  PayPal preferred, credit cards accepted, though I will accept International Postal Money Orders made out in Canadian dollars.  Current exchange rate will be used for payment.  Further details on payment will be provided if you need to pay by money order.
  • A small advance is requested up-front, except for sketches, for which the entire sum must be paid up front.  At least 50% must be paid after the sketch is complete before colouring can commence.
  • Client satisfaction is my number one priority.  I will communicate with you and provide progress images every step along the way and encourage you to ask as many questions and check in as often as you like.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask!  Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

I'll be at the Comic Market (formerly Artist's Alley) at Anime North this year for my first table appearance at a convention.  I'll be bringing fanart and catgirl prints, offering commissions on-site, and I'm going to try to finish some original marker fanart for sale, as well.  I'll be sharing a table with teddybearbones.

Hope to see some of you there!  And if you have any suggestions for art to print - or characters to draw in marker - please let me know.
