Persephone by cinquain Persephone by cinquain
Far from my typical work, I realize. For one, the vast expanse of whiteness. Oh my! For another, no, this is NOT a boy.
Felt like doing something a bit more 'traditional', I guess.
I'm trying to overstep my aversion of drawing females, cause I really don't know what that aversion is all about, really.
Anyway, I hope you like it a bit despite it being something completely unlike me.

Either way, my little tribute of the passing of winter into spring.

The title:
Persephone, the Greek Goddess

Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was such a beautiful young woman that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. One day, when she was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it.

Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate (or the seeds of a pomegranate, according to some sources). When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year. The other months she stayed with her mother. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began. This myth is a symbol of the budding and dying of nature. In the Eleusinian mysteries, this happening was celebrated in honor of Demeter and Persephone, who was known in this cult as Kore.

This is truly beautiful. I love the white, you know, the 'veiled' sensation, like she's there, but she's not. This is exactly what Persephone's story is about; she was the goddess of spring, essentially the goddess of life. Then it was in complete contrast to her spirit, becoming Queen of the Underworld, like dying. (becoming a ghost- the white veil) I really loved how you symbolised that- keep giving us more art with such deep, beautiful  focusses!!

The white charcoal is amazing. You have far more control than I do. I love the negative space of her hair... it seems very appropriate for her... And I can't get over her eyes, they're entrancing and full of so many things I can't really name, yet set in a blank face. I agree with whoever made the comment that she's sublime.

I also enjoy the summary you used. The Rape of Persephone is an extremely complex myth that most people don't actually know even if they think they do (trust me, I've read every ancient version of it lol). The info you gave covers the events directly relevant to Persephone herself and avoids some of the sugar-coated love story (it was rape, and sometimes Demeter actually sets the world on fire ^.^; mommy was mad) or Christian revisionist (Persephone was not Eve) traps that many fluffy retellings fall into. Bonus points for Kore and the Eleusinian Mysteries! Nice job lol. Sorry for the mini-rant, it's just a pet peeve lol.

This is gorgeous. I also thought it was a photo initially. You really captured the sense of the goddess too. A young woman with eyes of surprising depth and sadness. I'm writing my thesis on the cults of Persephone and Demeter & Kore in ancient Greek religion, and I was taking a break to find some inspiration when I found your work. It is definitely inspiring.

how did u achieve the negative space? did u leave it blank and go intricately around it to keep it white or did u erased it after? if the latter, then u have an amazing eraser. im REALLY intrigued to know how you did that ? :) its so beautiful

I left it blank. No eraser in the world will take charcoal off a piece of paper 100%.

beautifully dont. love the overwhelming white in this. im not sure why. i guess its bc its her hair and its in her fce and just different and wonderfully done. is there a particular reason why you only chose to show a small portion of her face? its very beautiful and striking. nice angle. overall, amazing.:clap::heart:

Most of the white was done by simply avoiding the area on the paper and cleaning it up with an eraser, and some of it was done with white charcoal.
