Go. F**k. Off.
The older a hybrid vehicle gets the slightly longer time elapses before said hybrid GETS GOING at a green light if oh... the hybrid has been PARKED FOR 8 HOURS. IN THE GODDAMN COLD IN THE GODDAMN WINTER! And has driven less than 3 blocks. The electrons in our batteries are waking up and in desperate need of coffee.
THERE IS NO NEED TO HONK! That hybrid you so loathe to share the road with WILL MOVE once the battery or gas engine gets the go ahead to move the hybrid. And again in the winter... it's up to THE COMPUTER to decide what to do. Not the driver. And in the middle of winter... the computer needs a cup of hot coffee. Often times I'm surprised by the sudden jerking or acceleration or stammering of my vehicle. Or the few moments of nothing at all.
Here's how the 2011 Honda Insight actually works...
Battery: Provides acceleration ASSISTANCE to the GAS Engine.
Gas engine: Provides the 99 ponies to move the weighty vehicle. And CHARGES the battery. In the cold... kinda oh...SLUGGISH.
Computer: Decides the best course of action on driver input. On the 2011 Insight a COLD battery needs to warm up to provide the assistance to the gas engine.
Old man Winter: Happily degrading performance of batteries since batteries were invented. Check the internet for "Dead battery in the winter". This applies to HYBRID VEHICLE BATTERIES.
Driver: Freezing in the driver's seat until the hybrid has driven at LEAST 2 to 3 miles to warm up. And CURSING EVERY GODDAMN RED LIGHT WHERE OUR ENGINES TURN OFF. No engine NO HEAT. Just cabin air refreshed from OUTSIDE. And in the summer... NO AC.
Got a 2001 to 2004 Pruis? You've GOT NO REVERSE GEAR until the battery WARMS UP and STARTS CHARGING. I've waited for 20 minutes until my 2002 Prius had enough power to back out of my parking space. And asking others for a push... only meets with laughter and middle fingers. And other angry drivers waiting for your parking space.
MOST hybrid vehicles out there have NO kind of anything that can keep the hybrid batteries warm. Or fully charged and ready to go in the winter. So they're sluggish off the line if completely cold. And most remote car starters are useless if YOU ARE OUT OF RANGE unless you park in those luscious no-no parking spots at work reserved for customers or patients. Which can anger your boss. Or bosses.
So the next time you find yourself in a cold place behind a hybrid vehicle... please be holding... the driver already has their foot on the accelerator and will move when power is available. ALSO the 2011 Honda Insight CAN and MAY ROLL BACK until forward momentum is achieved. So PLEASE give us some wiggle room! If you don't and plan to argue in court that I hit you, please be noting the 2011 Polished Metal colored Honda Insight that may or may not be in front of you may or may not be equipped with not one, not two, not three, but FOUR DASH CAMERA views. Two forward, one rear, one cabin view. So if you see a Polished Metal Honda Insight... Consider yourself lucky if something does happen to you. I will be more than welcome to provide video evidence to your insurance agency. Provided you are in southern NH.
