2017.... Level Completed. Unlocked: Year 2018

Holy moly... can you believe that 2017 is over?

I remained alive and productive with no major catastrophes.  My dogs are still doglike.  I worked a lot, drew a lot of drawings, made some cool videos, and met some great new people.

Major thanks to my patrons!  You guys have made all of my wildest dreams come partially true.  And that's a good start.

This year... i spent pretty much every night at Workplace-K, which is a wonderful place.  My best friend and i had a pretty kick-ass vacation.  i got a crush on a girl, was rejected, and nothing came of it.  (Sigh.)  I took the dogs to the River a lot.  I spent more time than usual alone, because there aren't many coworkers at my job that i can truly vibe with.  (I miss Erin and Bryan and Isaiah and Lewis and too many others...)

I went to the theater a lot.  It's the one fun thing i still do since i no longer drink and i'm too busy to do anything else.

Wonder Woman was probably my favorite movie of the year.

Twin Peaks returned after 25 years, and you have no idea how huge that is, probably.  I wish i could fully explain.... Twin Peaks.  I'm not sure if anyone can.

I saw a solar eclipse!  That was... August 21st?  Holy hell, i can't believe that was just over four months ago.  It was pretty amazing, and i'm glad i took the time to drive back to the 'Boro to see it.  (A partial eclipse is meh, a total eclipse is all that matters!)

I didn't drink at all this year.  Total sobriety... except for a couple of doses of THC-laced coconut oil while on vacation.  That stuff is strong.

.... obviously, my first goal in 2018 is finishing up all the projects left over from 2017.  There's still 4 Fuukas and 2 Fioras and a Gelga and a lot of Overgrown Onis left to do....

...but after that?

I have so many ideas for comics and drawings.  You will probably like them.  I have a hunch you will like them.

The one thing that might change is that i will no longer be able to do EVERY commission that comes my way.  I... i made a mistake in 2017 by agreeing to way too much.  This is unfair to me, and to my commissioners.

I hate telling someone 6 months later that i'm FINALLY ready to start their commission, and they say "Oh?  I kinda forgot about that..."  I totally understand, and it sucks.

My default answer is always "yes."  If someone asks me for help on some random task, i instinctively say yes.  If someone asks me if i want to watch some movie i may not even like,  i instinctively say yes.  I never want to feel like i'm missing out, and i don't like to turn people down...

...but, i only have so much time.  I'll never be able to draw these ideas that hundreds of people might love if i feel obligated to draw every single thing people want.

Once i get to the bottom of the Queue, i want to start doing what VanHeist does -- spend 80% of my time on big ideas, and then, every once in a while, opening up 3 commission slots.  That way, the ideas are fresh, and they can be done in good time.

You know?

2018 is going to be an even better year than 2017.

I feel like i learned a lot in 2017, especially when it comes to making comics.  My comics will get better and better.

What drawings am i most happy with this year?

"When I was alive, I believed -- as you do -- that time was at least as real and solid as myself, and probably more so. I said 'one o'clock' as though I could see it, and 'Monday' as though I could find it on the map; and I let myself be hurried along from minute to minute, day to day, year to year, as though I were actually moving from one place to another. Like everyone else, I lived in a house bricked up with seconds and minutes, weekends and New Year's Days, and I never went outside until I died, because there was no other door. Now I know that I could have walked through the walls."

Singing the Praises of Iron Man III

.....urgh.  Day two of my staycation was unfortunately marred by a vicious headache, as well as having to deal with the guy my brother hired to mow the lawn (our mower just broke, and we don't want to buy a new one until Spring...)

No matter.  Begin Day Three!

I did watch Iron Man III yesterday, though.  That's one of my favorite Marvel movies and i feel like people have forgotten how amazing it is.  Think back on it, though... it was the official start of Marvel's Phase Two, after The Avengers.  That was where the MCU got a little darker and stranger after the fairly straightforward Phase One.  All the characters were being confronted by things from the past; Tony fighting a "demon" he created, Thor fighting ancient Dark Elves from the time before Time, and Cap learning that Bucky was still alive... while new weirdness like the Guardians and Ant-Man appeared on the horizon.

When Iron Man III first came out, it was a huge hit.  It was just as big as The Avengers and Black Panther.  But a lot of people seemed to not like it.  I heard people say that the Extremis villains were too far-out, that the fake Mandarin was too odd, and that overall it was too jokey and irreverent...

...but watching it again today, it seems perfect.  It's hard to remember that a lot of Phase One movies were more "serious" in tone, particularly Thor and Captain America.  But Iron Man III was where they really nailed the comedic, anything-goes feeling that would dominate the MCU from then on out -- the rapid-fire non-sequitur references to "Hispanic Scott Baio," Downton Abby, etc.  This is where that became entrenched, for better or worse.

Watching it again, it's also kind of bittersweet.  Tony's house gets blown up and.... he never really rebuilt it, did he?  He may have saved "dummy" from the wreckage, but you never see the hopeless robot arm again, do you?  Extremis-Pepper has her ultimate bad-ass moment at the end when she kills Killian, and... that was the last time she was ever a major character.  Pepper became a rare woman in the MCU after that... along with Jane Foster, now that i think about it.  Where'd they go?

How quickly these things we take for granted slip away into the past.

Did Pepper even survive The Snap?

This was also the last movie where the Iron Man suit felt like a real, clunky, mechanical object, just as it evolves into an almost ethereal concept that Tony can summon and disperse at will.  I kind of miss the clunky realness of old Iron Man.

It's the only Marvel movie that has a generic president, some boring white guy named President Ellis.   Who's the president during Infinity War?  Who knows.  Details like that get lost.

It's strange how this movie came out 5 years ago, which is not that long a time... but it feels like a long time, doesn't it?  Time is different than it used to be.  Time moves faster but it's more dense.  There's so much MORE happening all the time, isn't there?  2013 was ages ago.  Ages.

When Iron Man II came out in 2010, life was still... normal.  That was a movie that i'd buy on DVD and watch over and over with my brother; it seemed very new and exciting and memorable, there was still this feeling of "wow, i'm so glad they made a second Iron Man because i loved the first one, how lucky we are these movies are making money -- but will Thor be too weird for audiences?  Will Captain America be too old-fashioned for today's kids?   What if they flop and these new superhero movies... go away?  They're talking about making a full-on Avengers movie, but i'll believe THAT when i see it!"

Huh, i guess we had nothing to worry about.  When Iron Man III came out, it was another link in the chain, enjoyed but somewhat forgotten in the mad rush that followed.

But it remains one of my favorite movies in the MCU.

That is all.

Oh, and this!  This is amazing!

The Nocturnal Repast
(completed February 7th, 2012.)

A carnivore, a dinosaur, its fossilized remains resplendent on display
adorn the halls inside the walls of lordly vicar Desmond Pike,
a facade be paraded for his after-lunchtime guests, a garish, grim charade
to be poked and puzzled over as they lick the dewy ice
that cools their minty juleps
and the teas they brew from tulips.

The fearsome beast he imitates, the dashing Desmond does,
clawing at the ladies' muffs and snapping at their heels
to make them blush and squeal, such mischief ever was
the shadow of the rapes he planned with secrecy and zeal...
Oh my!  The dread assaults
he carries out within his vaults.

There inside the marble space he led the captive lasses
to ravish them with strikes and slaps, frightful violent brawl
He'd wet his manhood proper, sticky as molasses,
and cuff them with his cutlass, and copycat their caterwauls...
Such it was for quite a time,
the Lord Pike carried out his crimes.

But then one midnight thus at play with rakish libertines
as they dance the Tarantella on the alabastar roofs
the dinosaurs with sharpened claws, the whales with their baleen
the sharks with jagged yawning jaws, the horses and their hooves...
thunder past in legions,
overrunning all the region.

A sign?  A portent?  Who can say, Desmond lifts a glass,
the absinthe slithers down his gullet, bringing to him vapors
as he steels his doubting mind from the impending flabbergast...
Greenish faeries dancing, he's captivated by their capers.
Desmond's shriek by all is heard.
But no one understands his words.

The Moebius loop, a curlicue, he sees inside his fevered brain
as chessmen on a fiery stage, they roister and they square,
a surfeit of the burly brutes like those of Old Edain
emerge from alcoves, fully-armed, astride demonic mares...
They freeze the dancers' merry steps
and rob them of their humid breath.

An elder dame, intoxicated by the orgies of the dusk
is swarmed by black tarantulas and and serpents from the reeds
attracted by the smell of meat and salty human musk
they emerge in force and feast, the scorpions and centipedes,
the foxglove moths and stinging flies,
they nibble moist and luscious eyes.

Desmond, his warty member half-erect, thrusting at an opened groin
laughs with manic happiness as he is like devoured,
no treasure of his father's trove, no writ of lord, or coin
can save such sinning mortals from the twilight's eldritch powers,
the breadth of Satan's hidden might.
Lost are all in such a night.

Crawling worms and spiny eels, they nip at skin and hair
and greedily they feed 'till they are overgrown,
They rip, and dig, and tear a path into his underwear,
the tender solar plexus now their home...
Desmond's body, now a hive.
Yet somehow he is still alive?

The venom's path within his veins, the burst of milky sores
the blotchy spots, the stinging pains, the pollen's bitter flavor
the cry of rook and rat, the toadstool's poisoned spores
all of these delights the hapless Desmond savors
as he falls into an endless sleep,
forever writhing in the deep.

And he shall live forever as a teeming maggot heap.
